By vet starter, i mean a starter not on a rookie contract.
Being the lowest paid one is a far cry from a kings ransom, as you claimed.

I do think 12M is fair tho, and I don't think I'd go higher than that, as he is more of a bridge guy than a long term answer.
As i mentioned, the 12M isn't the sticking point though.
It's the 6M per year after that.

For 1 year if they have the resources to do it they should. The money would just free up again going into next offseason.

I think they would have to move around some money to make that happen though.

And if Maccagnan is so worried about Fitz regressing just put in a big chunk of his salary as performance bonuses. Stop being stupid and get this deal done

This makes no sense, as the cap space now rolls over to the next season....Even more of a reason to hold firm and not overpay for Fitz or anyone for that matter

Thank God we have a very smart guy in Mac making the decisions

I neither like nor dislike Fitz. If the team brings him back it will be for his leadership and mentoring of Hack and Petty. Macc made him an above market offer as evidenced by the 0 competing offers. But he needs to draw a line in the sand to get this resolved before training camp so it doesn't linger. No more questions to players about when Fitz will sign and show.

If he doesn't come back oh well, I have faith in Gailey to get Geno to perform well. For all the stupid shit Geno does he also does a few things pretty well. I believe Gailey will focus on those things and try to space the field and create easy reads, same thing he did for Fitz but with Geno he will be able to attack downfield a little better.

If 12M is not a problem than 6M most certainly shouldn't be either.
Remember that Jets view Fitz as a backup in 2017-18. I don't mean "backup quality" who starts.. I actually mean the guy holding the clipboard.

Going rate for a vet holding a clipboard is what.. 2-4M? So Jets are actually giving 50% premium to Fitz.

The problem is that Fitz wants more money, regardless how Jets are planning to use him. Don't get me wrong -- he has every right to push every button to get every extra penny. There is however absolutely no reason for Jets to budge. Not because bench is better, but because this offer to Fitz has already premium built in, no matter how you look at it.

What you got is my 7-yo puffing out her lips whining "but I wanna candy, daddy!!!"
    Tough luck :)

Go tell it to Fitz, he is the one who wouldn't go for performance bonuses in 2017 and 18. Can you maybe guess why?

If we can't sign Fitz, we'll be in the trade market for a vet QB.
Geno is terrible. You can't gamble a season on him with no competition or safety net at the position.

Technically, unless you got Rogers or Brees, you're gambling a season with any vet QB, including Fitz.

Chase Daniel just got 7M to hold the clipboard, so your numbers are way off.

and there is a much better chance Fitz will at least enter 2017 as the starter, as there is Daniel ever starting.
Bowles said Fitz is the clear starter for 2016 if he signs, and I'm not so sure Hack will be ready to unseat him in the near future.

why not offer him some performance incentives for beyond 2016? i think that is a fair way to approach it.
if you are so sure he won't be starting, i don't see how that would be a problem or unreasonable.
and if he does start, he won't be paid less than Daniel holding the clipboard.

putting Geno out there without a backup plan, and hoping he's not a trainwreck again, is a much bigger gamble than putting a journeyman like Fitz or McCown out there.
it's not even comparable in terms of risk.

When the fuck did Geno ever wear #12, it is after all retired?

Whoever let that happen even if it was one preseason game should be shot!

I would not lock him to a God damned thing in 2017 and 18. If he still becomes our best choice then will continue to suck or be average at best. We need to find our QB by the end of 2016, internally or externally. End of story.
Not you in particular, but I hate all these fans here telling us that Fitz is our best option like that is a good thing LOL. The only reason we hardly ever see the playoffs is because we can't seem to find a QB that can really lead this team. Including Fitz.....10-6 record and all.

You're basing your argument on what Eagles are doing? At QB??! Even then, average 7 and 2, get 4.5 and realize Jets are offering more.

Report incentives is your pipedream. Fitz doesn't want to deal with incentives, can you guess why?

There are 2 backups, already on the roster. And if Jets need to go to backup, season is fucked already. It doesn't matter is Petty, or Hack, or McCown backs up.
