Agree or disagree and why? I think we may have our franchise QB already. With the receiving corp we have, when that person is given the opportunity to play he will shine ala Brady. We have gathered som elite talent on both sides of the ball. Age, health, and wealth may decide how we progress over the next 3 years. Our time has come to make that leap to the next level like Carolina and Seattle has. We may have the team as constructed or just be 1 or 2 players away.
The Jets have some older stars like Revis, Mangold, Marshall, Fitzpatrick, etc. If they are 3 years away, it would mean they would be going without most of their current top talent. That is why Maccagnan's job is not easy. He need to replenish talent while losing talent at a pretty quick rate. Hope he succeeds.
That elite franchise QB is not on our roster today. Fitz gives us the best chance to make the playoffs over the next few years and with some breaks going our way, who knows. Beyond that, drafting that elusive franchise QB will determine the answer to your question. 3-5 years sounds like the most reasonable, quickest window to competing for a SB IF we get that QB.
Yep. Hopefully Bryce Petty or more likely Christian Hackenberg develop into that franchise QB. It is possible.
The Jets aren't X amount of years away from a superbowl. They are a franchise QB away. You have to hope one of the young QBs on the roster pans out, but until one does I can see the Jets drafting a QB each year to increase odds of hitting. They aren't winning it this year. Next year the Jets will have a better idea of where Hack and Petty are in their development.
We need to find a young #1 receiver to pair with Hackenberg (I'm assuming that he's going to be given the reigns eventually given where he was drafted). By the time he plays, Marshall and Decker will have both declined significantly or be gone. I believe the blueprint in today's game is to find a young QB-WR duo and build around them for a decade. Lots of teams are following it. Derek Carr-Amari Cooper, Blake Bortles-Allen Robinson, Jameis Winston-Mike Evans, Teddy Bridgewater-Laquon Treadwell. All of the league's upcoming franchise quarterbacks have a receiver they can grow with. We need to find ours (I wouldn't have argued if we took Doctson/Treadwell over Lee in the first this year).
Post this again after we re-sign Fitz. ...btw, I think the need for a "franchise QB" is overstated. Super Bowl QB's (since the 80's) Tony Eason Rex Grossman Stan Humphries Colin Kaepernick Neil O'Donnell Chris Chandler Jim McMahon Kerry Collins Jake Delhomme Jeff Hostetler Trent Dilfer Rich Gannon Brad Johnson Matt Hasselbeck Mark Rypien Joe Flacco Doug Williams Steve McNair Boomer Esiason Kurt Warner http://www.sportsonearth.com/article/162272534/ranking-all-57-super-bowl-starting-quarerbacks By my count, 8 of those guys won the Super Bowl.
I like the OP's optimism, but I have a tough time seeing us in the Super Bowl unless one of our young guns magically becomes a franchise QB.
I don't believe in the philosophy in NEEDING a true number one but we do need to eventually replace Marshall and Decker in the near future. Hopefully Devin Smith and Enunwa can be decent 2 and 3 options in the future. Maybe Jace Amaro will breakout also. These coming drafts have to address the offense so that window of competing can continue after the veterans regress. Receivers, line, rb, QB etc
I wanted Treadwell bad for exactly that reason. It's not often a top receiver like that falls into your laps in the early to mid 20s in the draft. I could be wrong but he seems to be an Alshon Jeffery/Brandon Marshall clone with a huge wingspan to help a young quarterback that seems to have problems throwing high. We badly needed a youth infusion at linebacker but I halfway hope that Treadwell flops so we're not shaking our heads at that pick 5 years down the line. I'd imagine Marshall and Decker both retire within the next three years. Decker will most likely move into becoming some sort of reality star, and something tells me he gets out of football sooner rather than later with a wife that has a substantial income and the amount of big hits he takes working out of the slot. Marshall is plenty ready to work in TV. Any draftniks have any information on top receiver prospects? JuJu Smith-Schuster and Mike Williams seem to be the top prospects and the class seems somewhat deep even though that can change. http://walterfootball.com/draft2017WR.php I just hope we go get a big possession receiver because that can be the most helpful asset to a young quarterback. Marshall would be great for one but he'll likely be over the hill and retired by the time Hackenberg is ready. A guy that can go get poor throws and turn them into catches. Strong hands, long arms, etc. Hopefully we stop caring about the god damn 40 times.
It might be idealistic, but if Smith turns into the deep threat we thought he was, and Enunwa progresses in the slot, we're not in terrible shape. We just need to find our next Brandon Marshall.
I can't believe (well, actually I can because we have some really STUPID fans) that 7 posters think this regime is inept. They ought to be banned from this site permanently and forced to watch the Rich Kotite-coached Jets for the rest of their lives. SMH
I also couldn't believe that anybody would vote that our current regime is "inept", let alone 7 people! It may not be that they're stupid though...they may just be too young to have lived through those Kotite-era teams, or perhaps too short-sighted; in other words, all they think about is the present day with no recollection or understanding of the history of the Jets franchise.
i think we are 1-3 years from even having a winning record/make the playoffs, let alon a superbowl. our best players are all old and in 3 years wont be on the team or may not even be in the league anymore. Carolina and seattle have MVP calibur QBs. we have dog turd at qb. we are in the middle of a rebuild. we good drafting maybe in 3 years we can be a wildcard team
8 guys in 40 years isnt a very high percentage.. also... kurt warner and boomer esiason were MVPs. Rich Gannon was an all pro.
Yeah, but Kurt Warned was an undrafted rookie and a once in a lifetime story. Recall that season Trent Green was their projected starting QB and people thought their season was over when he got hurt in the preseason, since they had no experienced backup. Plus, I wouldn't call any of those guys "franchise QB's". Boomer was above average, and Gannon had a career year but was really just an above average starter the rest of his career. All 20 of the guys I listed took their team to the Super Bowl, and 8 of them won it. None of them were really franchise QBs. Also, Peyton Manning and Dan Marino, for example, had very poor overall playoff records. Marino, for how great he was, never won a super bowl. Donovan McNabb, who was considered a franchise QB, never won a super bowl. That's just off the top of my head....if you research it, you will find that franchise QBs don't have a very good record of getting their teams to super bowls, let alone winning it.
WTF kind of bullshit is this? You start a thread with an empty line and don't fill in the Grand Canyon sized blank? Back into hibernation for you.
