Could Mac sign a different vet (around $2-3M) as backup for Geno? That's the one missing piece to having Geno start....who backs him up. Geno would not need a seasoned vet to lecture him after every play. Geno's going into his 4th season and already knows what's expected of him. Just needs reps and teammates that can help make the game plan happen. Marshall and Decker are a real good start. With Fitz still holding out, I wouldn't be surprised if Mac is 'quietly' talking to agents for a half dozen vet qbs. If that's the case, what vet BU QB would you like to see in here?
And who gets Geno to stop running backwards? Who gets him to throw the ball away? Who gets him to find an open receiver, not just the first in the rotation? Who gets him to have the confidence to stand in there when 1000 pounds of linemen are coming for him? Who gets him to exhibit the kind of confidence that will spread to his teammates in order to win games?
It's called maturity, good coaching, and improvement Unless you're another one who thinks young QBs never can get better It's pretty reasonable to assume that all things considered Geno should be better in these areas.....how much better who the hell knows
Until Geno proves otherwise, he plays the position like a moron. Maybe he proves to be other than that someday. I'm not sure I want the Jets to be that proving ground.
I actually agree he has to prove it but I trust Mac and Bowles to evaluate his progress this summer My thing is Geno can be better in these areas but Fitz's weaknesses are what they are at this point. There's no guarantee Geno will improve but you gotta think at worst he will be a little better than what we last saw, and who knows after that When your other option is a QB I have zero faith in making a deep run with and you have to pay an extra premium for it, I don't really mind the Jets being that proving ground.....I get what you're saying though
Here's my thing. If Geno Smith comes out and looks somewhat competent, but not great, does he get an extension? I'm not talking Cam Newton performances, just Fitz-style numbers. Does he get that chance? And why?
I think Smith is going to find his value in the FA market, much like Fitz has. Geno is like a job, too good to quit, but not so good that you don't look for another. We probably bring him back, but not for a huge payday.
Of course it is a waste of money and you just proved it by saying he is not the future which we all know anyway. All it does is stunt the development of the other three and as I said it's not like we are fighting this year for a title or even the playoffs.
Some ridiculous posts by most of the above except Ralebird I don't think Mac wants a Vet instead of Fitz or we would have one already Why the defeatist attitude Don? I am sure Mac and Bowles, thank God are NOT thinking that way You don't go into any Season not wanting a SB or PO that's a fast way to lose your job FTR the Mo deal just got done , I don't think you invest millions into the Team and players if you don't think you can win with them. The Jets have a strong team with some high talented players all good enough to make a PO run RIGHT NOW...no except for Mevi$ I don't think Mac is "wasting" any money I can see now that Mac has both a short term and long term plan . The team is already MUCH improved through draft and free agency. Long term he has guys like Hackenburg/Petty who need to develop through a mature albeit very mediocre QB like Fitz...for a year or 2, 3 tops. Mo is a leader on defense as well Sorry but you don't hand over the keys to the top of the line Hummer to someone like Geno Lets keep our shorts on and stay the Course
Sorry but you don't hand over the keys to someone like Fitz. Please explain to me the time when he proved that he could lead a team to the playoffs. I must have Rip van Winkled that season because I don't remember it. I have stated it a 100 times - The Jets won 10 games last season IN SPITE of Fitz not BECAUSE of him. (Now 101) Some posters think Fitz is the fucking Messiah, we would have won just about the same amount of games last season with Geno, just like the Jets will win about the same amount this season with Fitz or Geno, this team's success is not hinged too much on that -- bottom line is neither is going to change that and make QB a position of strength and focus.
I think current FO will handle this situation just like they are handling all other. They establish reasonable price for the given skill level and stick to it. Your fear fundamentally is that Geno becomes average to slightly above average, good for career backup, QB and Jets overpay for it. This would be a very real fear if Tanny was still here. With Mac I'm sure it won't happen. They would handle average Geno just like they are handling average Fitz now: "there is value to have you here. The value is $X. We'd love to have you at this price, but feel free to explore and no hard feelings if you go" Byz, what you fear is that this FO will behave like SOJ, overpay for mediocrity to chase a hope. There is plenty of evidence that new FO won't do this.
It is certainly not defeatist, it is being realistic and I would much rather carry over the 9M or whatever it is to next year when we can end up with 30 or 40M or more. We will probably have an opportunity then to put a winning team on the field. Anybody who thinks (and there are plenty of you)_ that Fitz will throw 30 TDs again this year or that the Jets will win 10 games again this year are plain crazy. The competition won't allow it even if he manages to stay health all year which is also unlikely. I would love to be proven wrong but we will just have to wait to see the season play out to see who is right and who is wrong.
The only other FA's available right now are Kellen Clemons, Charlie Whitehurst, Jimmy Clausen, Josh Johnson, and Josh Freeman. Could sign one and see if someone better comes available via trade or training camp cuts. Regardless it doesn't look good for the once gang green message board golden boy, Petty.
Could trade for McCown. His cap hit is 5 mill this year and next year. Or...wait for Nick Foles to be cut by the Rams
I think that if Geno plays well enough and shows improvement in key areas, then I don't see why we wouldn't want to lock him up We could do what the Redskins are doing with Cousins if Geno doesn't like the deal we offer Basically that would be a nice problem to have but we're far away from that at this point
I love how the Geno lovers dismiss what Fitz did. Geno will improve if nothing else because of the talent but what you can't improve is pocket presence anf Geno just does not have it. Fitz played exactly the way coaches wanted last season. Do not turn the ball over in bad places have a chance yo win at the end. 30 tds two 1000 yd receivers if it was so easy why has no Jets qb done it before?
