If it's a one year deal, who cares how high the value is along as it fits under the 2016 cap? Pay him for the season and then he comes off the books at the end of the year.

It probably gives him incentive to throw another 30 td's as his performance will determine next year's value.

Then why waste the money? Still waiting to hear how many wins you think we get with Fitz over any of the others we have right now.

The offer was 3 years, 24M and since nobody has actually seen it I'm not sure when they could get out of it without a big cap hit. With the schedule we have I don't see more than 8 wins with or without him and probably not that many so again why waste the money? Let one of the other 3 play and get some experience, besides unlike Fitz one of them might actually be able to beat Buffalo.

That's why they should just offer a 1 year deal at $10M+. Pay for just one season and then it comes off the books for next year. No long term ramifications.

I just saw that .... they said that the Mo deal gives us more cap space for a 1-year deal for Fitz (which he reportedly is OK with) .... their take was that this gives the Jets more cap flexibility to work with, but ultimately they will decide a contract value and let Fitz take it or leave it, but they thought a deal would eventually get done in all likelihood.

I would be ok with an 8mil that could be 12 with incentives both individual and team success related for one year.

The pitch to Fitz should be a simple one:
"We got 9M in space. If you want a sniff at PO or SB for once in your miserable career, sign here, bitch!"

Once again, another test for Mac ... you do what it takes to bring back your most important player on offense. Whatever "cost savings" you can pull off is a bonus.

He passed with flying colors on the Mo deal, so that bodes well here too.

(notice I said most important player, not best player. Everyone knows Brandon Marshall is our best player on offense, but the QB is always the most important. And, of course, we don't have a viable alternative to Fitz for this season in which all the other pieces are in place.)

Brandon Marshall is the offense's (and team's) most important player. The Jets with Geno and Marshall are better than the Jets with Fitz and no Marshall.

That said, they're probably at their best with both.

We aren't going to the PO or SB with or without him this year unless about 5 or 6 of the first 7 teams we play drop dead in camp. We could spend a lot of money to sign him and he might be benched by week 6.

You could very well be right about that. I might be understating Geno's development ..... having said that though, it would be risky I think to trust such a complete team, ready to compete right now, to Geno Smith. ... I certainly do agree with that last thing you said: they're probably at their best with both Fitz and Marshall.

...as for the last comment above, I don't think we should be so terrified of the first 7 games on our schedule. Sure they all look like tough games now, but don't forget this is July, and often times projected strength of schedule in the offseason doesn't match actual strength of schedule once the games begin. Teams change from year to year quite a bit in this era of free agency...we're improved from last year and half of those teams might be worse, we won't know until the season gets under way. Strength of schedule is all speculation at this point.

Your first sentence is ridiculous; no one expects Fitzpatrick to be the face of the franchise once a viable replacement comes down the line. Resigning him is not a waste of money and gives the team the opportunity to win the most games whether that is six, or nine, or twelve.

I'd love to see them call Fitz, tell them that's their last and best offer, and he has one hour to decide. If he declines or hasn't made up his mind to sign within one hour, the Jets will be moving on and wish him a happy retirement.

Let's be real here... Fitz knows he wants to play, actually needs to feed the big family. He knows it and everyone else knows it. This is just a game so he can miss preseason and save his bearded old body from excessive bruising.

The shitty thing for him is that Jets are not waiting. Magic Mike spends reasonable $$ on the best available at the moment players. I thought there was a hush hush agreement with Fitz, and maybe there was. Mac isn't waiting so Fitz in his infinite wisdom might be risking that by the time he decided to sign, the pie is gone, all pieces are given.

I still think Fitz will jump on the wagon at the last moment, so I'm all for the ultimatum you're proposing. But TBH, I don't give a shit one way or another. Fitz is not THAT much better than Geno and this team will be winning or losing on D for the most part anyway.
Plus, I'm curious to see what Mr. Smith learned over the past year, what he can do with this O and this OC.

I don't want it to happen (unless it's for really cheap) but gotta think Fitz will sign eventually.....Makes no sense for him to not sign. Even if a QB gets injured who has the cap available to give him more than the Jets? Also, that team would have to be a team that didn't like their current backup either

Seems extremely unlikely that he ever gets a bigger offer than what the Jets are offering now

Only other way he doesn't sign with the Jets is if he has a ton of money in the bank and walks away, or he signs with another team out of spite for less......both of these scenarios are also very unlikely

Maybe there's also a very small chance the Jets pull their offer if they like what the see from Geno if this thing drags on....again very unlikely

So Fitz will be a Jet.....90% IMO
