The problem is he wants way more than tag money and that just isn't going to happen. Future years hits would be disasterous as they don't even have enough money now to sign a QB without making that contract a joke too next year.

As much as I love Mo as a player and Jet the fact that we can get similar production from two guys on their rookie contracts for a few more years makes him expendable. Its that simple. Unless he takes a fair deal I do not see him being on the team after this year, maybe we franchise tag him again but we should then try and trade him, again. There is no rush to try and sign him now it is not a pressing need. If something happens to Richardson or Williams it becomes a priority but not now. We should approach Mo with a mediocre deal today to maintain good relations with his agent but with our talent we have the luxury of waiting another year.

And for those of you upset with the lack of compensation we will get for him, the 20 million that would have been used against the cap can be spent on free agents for two more years due to our situation with little to no loss in production. At least that's how it looks right now. Who knows what happens next year but like I said we can wait a year if not two.

You don't pay QB money or overpay a player (which we would have to do) unless it is a need. 3-4 Defensive End is like the last thing we need.

The only time you should overpay is when you have financial flexibility and have a massive hole in the roster. We have neither. We have zero cap room and 3-4 defensive end is set for 2 if not more years. This is not like the Revis situation where we had 60 million in cap room and literally nothing at Corner Back. That's when you over pay not now.

The Jets and Richardson should be negotiating this year, since he's completed 3 years and is eligible for a new contract. However his circumstances off the field make those negotiations extremely unlikely.

The way you lock a guy like Richardson up is to do it before the 4th and 5th years of his deal. Those are the years that will be very cheap on the cap for the Jets relatively speaking and so you go to him with an offer that makes him a lot more money over 5 years, including more guarantees right away and that is nowhere near what he will average if he is franchised in year 6 and 7 and then hits the free market.

Richardson's compensation this year and next is $1.776M this year and then about $7.5M when the Jets exercise the 5th year option. So he has about $9.3M coming over the next two years. Then in 2018 he'll be franchised for about $17M. In 2019 the number would jump to about $19M. That means the real value of his "deal" with the Jets right now is 4 years and about $45M. He gets very little of that up front in this situation.

So the Jets offer him a 5 year deal worth $60M or so and offer to give him maybe $25M of it upfront. Right now. When he'd only get $9M over the next two years and then be uncertain of the franchise tag and how that would affect his free agency. Maybe they go up to 5 years and $70M with $30M up front if that's what it takes to get the deal done.

That's a win-win for both sides. Richardson gets his money and the Jets get him locked up through 2020.

This is what they did with Mo most likely.

    He said no.

I would rather see them trade Sheldon for a high draft pick and pay Mo. He deserves it and i dont trust Sheldon. The Jets should never place themselves in a position of needing him.

I'm sure the Jets would much rather that Mo had accepted their offer in 2014 also.

That's past history and there's no way to go back. The point is that signing Richardson right now, if he chose to take the offer, would be affordable and signing Mo will not be.

I don't think we would get proper value for Richardson. His stock is at an all time low with his off field issues and he has so much potential. Also not putting 20 million on the cap for two years is a huge bonus to not paying wilk that's why I doubt this happens.

I am not sure what the answer is but to say you can just plug in a guy or 2 , two rookies to replace Mo s production ,,,,,all I can say is I wish it were that easy. Mo brings so much to the table each week and the guy always says the right thing when it comes to interviews,,,,,,,,,,Sheldon is a time bomb ,he is like gallstones , sadly its only a matter of time before his next incident occurs.

Lol i'm telling you guys... we are going to hold him and sheldon hostage until they are near 30... then they will hit the market.

Mo gets tagged this year and will again next year after we fail to trade him again... that's about 33-35M guaranteed over 2 years (which is ok considering these other deals) .. he'll be turning 29 when he's on his new team in 2018-19 season.

Sheldon is going to get the same treatment.. play these last 2 years of his rook deal then get tagged up.. maybe twice

Yup. Mo was gone the moment Goodell walked to the podium. If MacCagnan knew Richardson would only be slapped with one game (vs 6-8) Mac would have traded Mo when he could (should?) have.

Watch Geno ball out this year and get 15M a year like Brock did. This is why one of the 3 DE's we have become expendable. We are in a unique position because we aren't paying a QB... Yet

yeah this is the only reason i think we'll be able to pull this tag twice on both of them. It's becoming a crazy high paid position and we have a log jam there.

Another thing is Mangold Marshall Revis Harris will all be off the books too after another 2 years probably... at least getting big guaranteed money will be off the books.

We'll be able to play these tag games with Rich and Mo and still pay other guys that will deserve that money like Pryor and..... umm... damn. lol. Yeah Pryor.

The real problem is that you can either field a good team or a few great players based on the capped environment. If you're lucky you have a QB that makes one call easy and then you're still grappling with the other questions.

The teams that win it all may be paying their QB top dollar but they're rarely paying anybody else like that. The teams that are paying huge salaries to non-QB's aren't winning championships.

Teams take risks on potential greatness, especially Dallas. Letting Mo go would be an example of that. I think we would be able to get good trade value from a willing partner.

If the Jets found a good offer, don't you think the trade would've happened by now? He will walk next season, it's too late. We will get a comp pick.

I don't think the Jets got even mediocre offers for Mo. I think they'd have jumped on a 2nd and a player that helped if that's what was out there. The Pats got the 2nd and the player who would help for Chandler Jones. They were ahead of the curve as usual.

Yeah it's unfortunate, but let's hope the Jets can compete for a playoff berth this year and most importantly WIN with the talent we have available. We have some good talent on both sides of the ball.

To win this year the Jets need continuation from Calvin Pryor and Sheldon Richardson and a breakout from either Leonard Williams or Lorenzo Mauldin. They need Brandon Marshall and Darrelle Revis to stay on top of their game and Eric Decker and Matt Forte to stay healthy. They really need the OL to have a blessed injury free year.

If all of that happens the Jets could win 10-11 games and make the playoffs with whoever is playing QB.

I see where you are coming from here, but DEs and DTs are getting paid good money these days. Looking at the top 10 highest contracts this year on defense based on average salary per year, most are linesmen. There is only one OLB on that list (Miller) and one CB (Josh Norman). I don't really consider it over paying if he gets a deal similar to Cox. Wilkerson is a need for the team, especially since the Jets already lost their pro bowl nose tackle, plus Wilkerson plays all over the line, not just DE. Losing both Wilkerson and Harrison would instantly change our Dline from a strength into a possible weakness or mediocrity at best.

Mo Wilks is better than Richardson and Williams, and there is no guarantee that Richardson doesn't do something stupid and get suspended for a year or that Williams becomes as great. I honestly do not see either of them making up for the 12 sacks Wilkerson is good for. If we pay Wilkerson a long term deal, we can explore trading Richardson or Williams. We don't HAVE to roll the dice with them just because it saves money in the short term.

If you are looking at at it strictly financially, it makes sense to trade him but we've already seen that tag and trades almost never happen in the NFL, and next year if he is tagged again it will be even harder to move him. But if you look at it in terms of leadership, production and character, it would be a big loss for the team, no way around that. Basically if he doesn't sign a deal by tomorrow, he's as good as gone with no compensation unless a team gets desperate after an injury before the trade deadline. Tagging him again next year would be dumb, might as well let him walk at that point. The truth is, Idzik should have paid him a few years back when he sat on that 20m of cap space. Dline contracts certainly are not getting any cheaper.

And for those of you saying that all you need is a good edge rusher like Von Miller, don't forget that the Broncos also had Demarcus Ware and 2 pro bowl corners. To say that the Broncos won the superbowl strictly because of Miller is ridiculous. Don't get me wrong, he contributed a lot and earned the MVP award, but without a decent Dline and decent corners, he becomes less relevant and this is true for almost any team. Defensive production as a whole is based on all 11 players, not one or 2 and they were able to keep the league MVP in check in the superbowl because of their combined effort on the front and back end.

We tried trading him all offseason and couldn't get value what makes you think we could now?

Richardson is a far superior athlete than Mo. And his ceiling is much higher.... Right now that is just potential but he has more and I think he is going to have a huge season making our decision easier.
