People have said this about the Fitzpatrick negotiations too. Not being loyal to a guy who helped win 10 games last year. Hold on a second! He made $3.5 million last year and the Jets are offering him a 3-year, $24 million deal? Seems fair to me for a journeyman who has never made the playoffs.
Every defensive player that has left except for Revis left because they weren't a good fit for the Jets evolving defense schemes. Now you can argue that teams shouldn't change their defensive front and coverage schemes as often as the Jets have but keeping players not suited for the new plan at top dollar is generally not a good move. 1998 - Parcells trades Hugh Douglas because he's planning to use a hybrid 3-4/4-3 and he doesn't think Douglas fits in the 3-4 side of the front. 2002 - Herm lets James Farrior go because he's miscast as a weakside pass rushing LB in a 4-3. The Steelers put him inside in their 3-4 and a star is born. 2006 - Mangini trades JAbe because he's running a 3-4 and JAbe is not a ROLB at this point in his career. Falcons keep him at RDE and he's still good there. 2008 - Mangini trades Vilma because he has no real role in a 3-4. 2010 - Rex lets Rhodes go because he doesn't need a pure FS in his defense he needs somebody who can hit and play either role depending on the formation. 2013 - Rex lets Pouha and Devito go because he's moving towards a much bigger defensive front and he wants immovable objects in the middle and tall guys with long arms on the edges.
Having Idzik here really screwed us up, he was too busy with clearing cap that he didnt take care of the one clear young player who deserved to be paid. This Mo situation should have been handled a long time ago and smart organizations lock up their star as quickly as they can because once they hit the open market desperate teams will overpay and set the market too high. Take the Eagles who have literally screwed us in more ways than i can count. Overpaying Sam Bradford (18 mi perl) overpaying a backup in Chase Daniel (7 mil per) and now overpaying Fletcher Cox (63 mil guaranteed). I think the Jets would like to be loyal but they're in a tough position, they correctly selected the BPA in Leonard Williams in last years draft and with already having Sheldon Richardson thats 3 pro bowl caliber DEs, there really isn't a need to pay for Mo if we already have the other 2 because they can't all play in their correct positions all at the same time. SOO Mo will go at the end of the season unfortunately well get like highest 3rd round pick ever for Mo in compensation and hopefully that guy turns into a pro bowler so this won't hurt as bad.
He was a pre-season hero with us and nothing more. A decent 3rd down back and nothing more. Sent from my SM-G930P using Tapatalk
Well Danny W is with the Chargers. So the Jets do not have to worry about that. Need to worry about the players that they do have.
The salary cap constrains how loyal any team can be to their talent. The Jets are as loyal as they can be, if anything more loyal than most. But when you have multiple people who deserve big new contracts, while also paying out hefty money to Revis and Marshall; well, something has to give.
I disagree. Mangold is a nice player but Abraham had 80 sacks in the 9 years after he left the Jets. For comparison that's more sacks than James Harrison has had his whole career. More than Mark Gastineau had his whole career. That's just sacks too - what an elite pass rusher brings to a defense is a hell of a lot more important than what a center brings to an offense. Also the drop off from a good center to an average center is not as strong as from an elite pass rusher to an average one. We've wasted lots of money and resources trying to get another player like Abraham since. Imagine Rex's defense with Abraham off the edge. abe was a pain in the ass though. and I am glad we got a good player out of the deal but I there's no way Id rather have Mangold than Abraham
well in that regard... no. we are not lol. Ferguson was about to get smooth cut if he didn't take that pay cut or retire. Mangold just such a team guy i think he'd cooperate with anything to make this team a winner, but he may be in the same boat as brick soon... but he's still much better. We'll see how we treat David Harris.. Those are the 3 class acts in the organization of my time. But then again i'm only 24 i'm sure there are plenty guys before my era of fandom that were treated better...
idk the OP explained what he meant by loyalty (drafted and retired with the team) and u named guys that been cut traded or just let walk to free agency... i agree with what your saying though..
How many people get to their 3rd contract on one team? Everybody I listed got a decent or better 2nd contract.
This thread feels like Meh-stello are probing water for an easy OS piece of trash. You can see the headlines in making... "Extensive investigation by Daily Snooze concludes that NYJ is a disloyal franchise" by Manish Costello and Brian Mehta Will include pearls like.. According to unnamed sources close to the situation "Obviously the Jets don't give a shit about there fans everyone knows that. As long as that skinny weirdo Woody Johnson lines his pockets everythings good." - said an insider familiar with inner workings of Jets organization.
