I tried to give it a lot of listens, never got into it. I see what people like about it, just not my bag.
Man... Dio... love the voice, but whenever I hear it, I see the face. Don't get me wrong, I know how talented he was and what he did for rock and metal. But his goblin face just ruined his music for me. I guess I'm too visual a person, kept me from being a musician, honestly.
I actually like sabbath with dio better . My 1st album that I really got into As a kid was mob rules.
Metal as we know it . Power chord dropped tuning was by mistake ... Iommi hD to compensate after chopping his fingers off. Later in the 70s the bluesy hard rock was fizzling out and punk was in. If not for Steve Harris .... As metal surges, punk turns into new wave. The remaining stubborn punks that refuse to jam to flock of seagulls find a way to infuse thrash and punk and we get hardcore. And I would also say imo, that the increasing explicit nature of hardcore and metal helped pave to way to hardcore rap.
Carcass Heartwork is awesome but i'd go with Death Human or Suffocation Pierced from Within as far as 90's death metal albums.
Agree that trying to select one album for each decade is way too onerous a task but I'm also surprised by the scarcity of Beatles and Stones mentions. Here's one to think about for the sixties: Pet Sounds.
I think the case could be made that Pet Sounds could be the greatest album ever, I'm not sure I agree but I'd absolutely listen to anyone who told me it was. I think the hardness in this comes from that in say the Beatles trying to select what album of theirs would be the best. Pink Floyd probably released 4 of the 20 best albums in the 70's so selecting one is extremely difficult. One thing I've kind of noticed is that the 60's, 70's and the 80's had hundreds of great albums, the 90's until today, not so many. Sure great songs but how many truly great albums post say 1993 or 94? Here's another of my favorites from the 70's Breakfast in America by Supertramp and could Graceland by Paul Simon be mentioned as the best of the 80's?
Agreed; for the Beatles I'd probably narrow it down to two - the White album and Rubber Soul. As far as Graceland, I'm not even sure that could be called any version of Rock and I don't think it ever got the kind of widespread approval we'd be looking for here. And the best case I can make for Pet Sounds comes from Brian Wilson who has said one cut from that album is the best song he ever wrote. Here he gets a few friends to help him with it:
Yeah it's impossible to pick one be all end all album. I picked the albums that I have an emotional connection to from the time/place and what they mean to me musically. I was born in 83, BOC was my 70s pick because they were always on when I was growing up. My Dad was in a band and one of the guys in his band knows them so I've met them a few times.

This is off the top of my head, didn't realize there were "correct" answers. No other album makes me think of my childhood more than appetite, that was the easiest one for me.
