In a utopian paradise you would be correct. Unfortunately we live in the real world. As I alluded to in my post above there are more corrupt churches than honest ones. Many televangelists here in the United States are snake oil salesman only looking after their own good. I'm sure we aren't the only country that has corrupt religious organizations. Power corrupts, absolute power corrupts absolutely. Nothing is more powerful than convincing someone that thei afterlife is in your hands. Religion isn't bad but the love of religion is the root of all evil.

I went to the Libertarian Debate in Vegas and I am 100% on board with Johnson, I don't agree with everything he believes in or stands for but I align more with his platform than anybody else. I'd say there are some more things of his most Americans would agree with then not and he's not an asshole or a criminal.

For a new party to rise in the American system one of the two old parties needs to die. We've had new parties arise almost continuously in the 2000's but as long as the GOP and the Dems are around the money will go to them and no new party will get off the ground and stay there. 2000 the Greens. 2008 the Working Families Party. 2012 the Tea Party. For any of those to have become a driving dominant force in American politics one of the two heavyweights would have had to go down for the count. It's not a Parliamentary system where a party can stick around at the 15% threshold for generations until it's moment arises. The Libertarians aren't going to suddenly become a strong party unless the GOP goes under.
Or maybe if everyone who was disgusted with the two main options and thought a third party vote was a waste would just go cast their vote anyway. We are getting close to 50% independent voters in this country. I can't imagine either candidate is particularly appealing to many who aren't voting the party line.
It's the money. You can't make a political party relevant without a huge amount of money at many different levels of the political system. Gary Johnson may get 13-14% of the vote this fall but the Libertarians will not benefit much from that because they won't take many, if any offices at the local, state and federal levels during the election. It takes a huge operation to get candidates on the ballot with the resources to actually make an impact at the ballot box in November. So a candidate who is a Libertarian but who has the option of running as a Republican will usually take that route because of the increased resources made available by running under the GOP banner. The answer in NY for years for the Liberal Party was to endorse the Democratic candidate for an office and then hope people chose the Liberal party line to vote for the candidate on the ballot. It took 5% of the votes being cast under the Liberal Party line for them to stay on the ballot election after election. There was never a chance for them to do that with their own candidate so they used the Democratic candidates to try to keep the party alive, if not viable.
