I just disagree that it's a huge problem...We needed huge help in the secondary and he was/is part of our massive improvement in that area Every team in the NFL has some overpaid players and any free agent worth a shit gets overpaid....the Broncos gave out huge free agent contracts and won a Super Bowl. The Patriots are like the only exception but they have Brady so they can afford to get away with it I'd rather overpay a great player than a mediocre one is my point....We our paying our starting QB literally nothing compared to most teams
+10000 Been saying the same for 50 posts but no one on the TGG wants to think the Revis shirt they bought was a bad investment lmao
+1000 AHHHAHHA You are just making to much sense here and thats dangerous I hear Paul Reubens is taking a break from his raincoat and sitting in porn movies to scout for the Jets
the issue in the offseason was skrine not revis. revis we can move away from, it was big money but short money. skrine getting 7M annually to be a nickel corner to me is a poor choice. it was overkill and an overreaction to the CB issues. when i look at our roster skrine is one of if not the worst contract on the team
Darrelle Revis 2015 season: #1 among NFL cornerbacks in completion percentage when targeted #1 among NFL cornerbacks in takeaways #4 among NFL cornerbacks in passer rating when targeted Despite a torn wrist ligament early in the season. Has been.
Hey NC. I meant to say he taking a break from his previous bad behavior to do some scouting for the Jets. I guess as a teacher you can spot those run on sentences haha
Never said he put in a bad year last year other than being torched by Watkins in last Buffalo game But its a five year contract worth 39 mil fully guaranteed and my prediction is the guy won't be up to his 2009 level in years going forward If I was being paid that much I would get that injury fixed pronto..... Revis has been a very good player just way overpaid...FTR the Jets on on the hook with him through 2017 and in my opinion that 17 mil draw each year affects our ability to pay other players My point is that if the owner can pay pay that type of money for our entertainment I don't see the prob with Fitz getting more money
I like Skrine and think he's very good at what he does. A nickel corner is basically a starter now...If you don't have a good one it can be a team killer. Hes not getting paid huge money though but I will admit he's overpaid I don't really think we have many terrible contracts....We have a great team actually but are missing a good QB which is obviously huge. You throw one of the top QBs on the Jets and I don't see how we aren't one of the favorites to win the Superbowl
Thanks ...a refreshing piece of analysis. Hopefully sets the stage for a revision in opinion on TGG . Looking at the Mo and Fitz mess in entirely different perspective considering a lot of the money is tied up with DMevi$, Skrine, Milliner, MWilliams
I disagree. Skrine was the first DB that we signed as a FA. We had been continually getting killed over the middle. Skrine also has the ability to play outside. We were desperate. Teams have to overpay for big name FAs anyway, but especially when they are desperate for help and have bad records. Further, Skrine could very likely be starting at one of the outside CB spots this year unless Milliner can stay healthy and live up to his potential. Even so, it's great to have insurance like Skrine who could step in at a moment's notice if Milliner or Revis go down with injuries. I think you need glasses if you think that Skrine's contract is one of the worst.
u don't need a wrist to cover someone. I didn't think Revis played poorly at all but he's obviously not the same player he was and thats okay. but the wrist excuse...? doesn't sit right with me
At some point Skrine has to become the best cover corner on the team not named Darrelle Revis or its a bad contract. You don't pay Skrine as much as the Jets are paying him to be a luxury, blitzing cornerback who covers a team's 4th option.... He made some plays last year but he wasn't consistently covering people - let alone doing a good job at it His salary also jumps from ~$2.5 mill to ~$7.5 mill this year. If he doesn't step up its a poor contract and I'd cut him after the season. Stepping in for Williams/Milliner or Revis should not be something you pay $7.5 million for. Cromartie was everyone's whipping boy last year and yes he was overpaid and didn't play well, but at least he was out there on an island covering people. Skrine was blitzing, getting double team help and occasionally sitting out coverage and now he's going to be making the same money.
I'm not saying that he's perhaps not overpaid a little. My point is that when a team was as bad as the Jets were, especially its secondary and specifically its CB corps, a team has to over pay to get FAs to sign there. I have no idea what the average starting salary in the NFL is for a #2 CB or a slot CB who can also play outside, but I'd be surprised if it's too much less than what Skrine is set to make this year. Skrine could be the #2 CB all season long, or depending upon the opponent, he could alternate between the #2 CB and slot CB positions from play to play. How many CBs in the NFL offer than kind of flexibility? While he may be a little overpaid, I just don't think the contract is as bad as some here are making it out to be. If he doesn't produce at a higher level this season, then by all means the team should cut him. The Jets were better last season, perhaps a lot better, in covering receivers over the middle. I think Skrine was a big part of that. $7.5 million would be too much for strictly a backup-type CB, but that's not what Skrine is. He's one of the better slot corners in the NFL and can play on the outside as well. His flexibility is huge in Bowles' D, where he likes to shift things and mix things up depending upon the opponent and matchups.
Rich Eisen made a great point on his show today: THIS MIGHT NOT BE RESOLVED BY TRAINING CAMP. Eisen suggested it could go as far as after the second preseason game. The play of Geno, Hackenberg and Petty could play into negotiations with Fitz. Injuries around the NFL to QB's too. If so: That is just absurd. If I am Maccagnan I have a Pre-Training Camp deadline. You are either there Day 1 or you won't be the starter. I honestly can't believe how big of a mess this has turned into.
And he will be holding out again this time next year. Because he will be "underpaid" (after all the $$ upfront) and Jets have cap space to afford him. Can't wait for the idiots here shouting to "pay your best player, we have the money".
Rich Eisen is guessing just like everyone else. It's just a theory--I give it as much weight as I do Namath's and Pee Wee Herman's prediction that Geno will start even if Fitz signs. _
Agreed, but I never had even considered it could go that long, so hearing that was interesting to me. I thought they would have a deal done before Free Agency began. Now there is a real chance a deal is not even done before Training Camp. Crazy.
Fatscesa was talking about it today when a caller suggested the same thing and he was pretty adamant that the Jets cannot let it get to that point. Veteran team and this is not what those guys signed up for if Fitz isn't back blahblahblah. He thinks the Jets are in a much worse position than Fitz is--thinks they've painted themselves into a very bad corner. _
