1st 1st rd pick Justin Dunn | Rank: 29 School: Boston CollegeYear: JuniorPosition: RHPAge: 20 DOB: 9/22/1995Bats: S Throws: RHeight: 6'2" Weight: 170 lb. Previously Drafted: 2013, 37th (1114) - LAD VIDEO Scouting grades: Fastball: 60 | Slider: 50 | Curveball: 50 | Changeup: 45 | Control: 45 | Overall: 50 At the start of the spring, Dunn was an interesting college reliever with arm strength, albeit one with a four-pitch mix many scouts were intrigued to see as a starter. They got their wish as Dunn became a part of Boston College's weekend rotation in April and saw his Draft stock take off. Dunn has always had a plus fastball and he maintained it in his early starts, lighting radar guns up to 98-99 mph and sitting in the 92-95 mph range. He utilizes two breaking balls, both of which are Major League average: a three-quarters curve and a solid hard slider. His changeup will also flash average, though he didn't need it much as a reliever. His command is fringy at present, but his outstanding stuff helps make up for it. Many teams feel Dunn has a very good chance to start as a Yordano Ventura type athletic, yet slightly undersized, right-hander. As a result, he was flying up boards, with some feeling he could be gone by the end of the first round.
Welcome the the Mets organization Justin Dunn. I really feel like Flores is just the type of player that needs to play everyday, and here & there play time isn't conducive to his ability to perform.
Another College pitcher. With the compensation pick for Murph Anthony Kay | Rank: 43 School: ConnecticutYear: JuniorPosition: LHPAge: 21 DOB: 3/21/1995Bats: L Throws: LHeight: 5' 11" Weight: 186 lb. Previously Drafted: 2013, 29th (866) - NYM VIDEO Scouting grades: Fastball: 55 | Slider: 45 | Changeup: 55 | Control: 55 | Overall: 50 The University of Connecticut has produced some excellent pro talent, headlined by George Springer, Nick Ahmed and Matt Barnes. Kay, the Huskies' Friday night starter, could be the next in line. Kay fits the mold of the advanced pitchability college lefty, one with a track record of success, not only at UConn, but also in the Cape Cod League in 2014 and with Team USA in 2015. Kay succeeds by filling the strike zone and keeping hitters guessing, albeit with the lack of a true out pitch. He'll top out at 94-95 mph with his fastball, though he pitches more effectively at around 91 mph. He has a consistently reliable changeup, though he telegraphs it at times by lowering his arm slot. His breaking ball is fringy. College performers like Kay tend to do well on Draft day. He could be seen as a poor man's Mark Buehrle type, one who could perhaps add a cutter at the next level to give him a four-pitch mix, helping him to be a quick to the big leagues back-end starter.
Surprised we went with 2 pitchers with our first 2 picks. I was thinking that 3B that eventually got drafted by the Pirates would be the choice. Gelbs said the Mets had interest in him. I like the idea of Dunn as a future 7th inning guy though. 99 as a reliever compared to 95 as a starter is a huge difference. Nice showing by Bartolo tonight though. Should've lit up Nelson for about 6 more runs but once again we leave 48 men on base. Any injury update on Walker? Hopefully thats nothing too serious.
Saw Walker in the post-game and he looked okay. I think he said the Dr., or Trainer, didn't find anything serious in an examination. The kid Dunn is compared to Yordano Ventura of KC, and looks the spitting image of him physically and in style. Very happy to see Lagares in, and do well. Just hope he holds up.
Ventura is a good comparison in terms of potential. Lets hope he has a little bit of a better brain than him though.
Is Granderson a free agent next year? I ask because I don't really like Lagares sitting as much as he does. He's a gold glove winner and a good hitter. I just hate having to choose between him and Conforto, I feel like the Mets would get more out of both guys if they played almost every night, but I understand why they can't. Maybe we slide Lagares or Conforto over to right field when Granderson leaves.
I've thought about it also looking forward. Lagares may be better suited as a 4th outfielder. He may also be at his most productive as a part time guy that doesn't have to carry too much of the load offensively, and a full time late inning defensive replacement and pinch hitter/runner. I don't think that Cespedes ever played RF in Cuba, just CF and LF. But he looks the part of a classic RF with that arm. If we keep him maybe he could work in RF next spring and we move Lagares into CF, or fill CF with a trade or FA that is more of an on base/speed guy for the top of the order. The pitching is great and deep. The way the roster is built needs work tho. Hopefully, Herrera, Rosario, Nimmo, and Smith work into that, or Sandy has chips to make that happen
Lagares has been a good soldier through this whole thing. After his really good 2014 season he could've definitely pushed his way out the door when his playing time dried up. Depending on how this year ends I could see a scenario where Grandy isnt here next season. But remember there is also a shot that Cespedes isnt too. Even with his diminished skills , Grandy still has value with his leadership.
Bases loaded none out in the top of the 9th in a tie game, and they score zero. That's why you have to send Cabrera on the base hit by Johnson and make Flores (the Brewers RF) throw him out. You sure can't expect Plawecki, Walker, and Granderson to do the job - they're collectively hitting .220 with runners in scoring position. And now Plawecki screws it up on defense again.
It's nice to see Flores hitting. Bases are going to be loaded, and one would have to think even they can't screw it up again.
Rivera needs to be the starter going forward. Plawecki has been a total disappointment since TdA went down.
