I listened to some of the game on radio tonight and Josh Lewin mentioned that Flores was going through a horrendous streak of non-production going back well into last season. Hopefully the two hits and RBI will get him going. We need it, but so does he. He has to start contributing and producing. Wheeler pegged to come back after the AS Game. I've seen a couple of interviews with him lately and it's fun see these guys growing up. He definitely matured some. He'll help this year and be ready to really go next year.
Ron Darling and Gary Cohen talked about exactly that during the TV broadcast. They said he's matured physically (Darling talked about how lots of rehab work can do that), but even more mentally and emotionally. He certainly has had the opportunity to be humbled - he went from being a shining light to being completely forgotten and overshadowed, and not by one guy, but by four. That has to be tough on the ego, but I think the saga of Harvey can show you that having to eat some of that humble pie after you've supposedly "made it" can be tough to handle. Maybe he'll be able to handle things better as a result of this come July. It sure wouldn't hurt if he can step into the rotation in the second half of the season, giving the Mets the flexibility to use Colon in all sorts of ways.
Okay, cool. I missed the game on tv tonight. Wheeler was kind of a shy and uneasy kid in the past, and that injury had to be tough on him too. He looks more confident in himself and more grown up now. That should help him with the bumps in the road he'll likely hit making his way back. He's a good, talented pitcher and I like him...and will be rooting for him.
Wow, in the space of ten minutes Plawecki embarrasses himself twice over. First he doesn't bother standing on the plate on a force play at the plate, and then he gets picked off at second on a high school trick play.
E-2 Plawecki...then gets picked off.....wake the fuck up!! d'Arnaud starting to hit, but net yet throwing. That will be the turning point. If he makes it back drop Plawecki to Las Vegas asap.....
If d'Arnaud's arm is bad Sandy needs to bring in a Franchise Catcher by next year. I don't believe that position is very deep in the minor league system.
Plawecki today cost us a run both ways. You know things are going bad for you when people are calling for a journeyman to be the #1 catcher instead of you. He can't say he wasn't given every opportunity. Oh boy Conforto is really going thru it. One good left handed pitcher couldn't have broken him. lol
That catch def saved the game , but man if Cespedes has to miss even 2 games it would be nice for Lagares not to be hurt at the same time. Cant catch a break right now with these injuries. Good luck against Jose Fernandez tomorrow.
Ah, okay. I missed that. It looked like he was able to turn his wrist back over before it hit the ground too. Amazing play
I'm trying to have fun with this season but the elephant in the room is that this team is not internally good enough to even get back to the World Series, and we won't be able to make the same trades we did last year. It will be a fun season regardless but the high expectations have made things tense and I am agitated at the Mets for a number of reasons. Thinking that Wright would play anymore than half of a season is ludicrous. You know who I would love to have playing 3B right now? Daniel Murphy. I wanted to sign him all along, he has reached his prime because he is such a student and admirer of the game. Most guys with sheer athletic talent hit their prime earlier and then decline. Murphy has come to understand the game on a more cerebral level and that's where his success is coming from. I knew that his playoff performance was a premonition despite a shoddy WS. We should have known that we'd get half of a season from Wright and that Daniel Murphy belongs at 3B. Wright should have been the backup 1B because you knew already that he is not an everyday player anyway! Instead we tried to convince ourselves Wright is still an everyday third basemen, when in reality he should be rotating in at 1st base and only occasionally 3rd. Just disgusted that this team didn't know how to make that next step and strike while the iron is hot. No Murphy? Ok, then go get Zobrist. Our ownership can't spend the money to get the last piece of the puzzle. Hell, Cespedes was such a long shot we envisioned the start of this season without him. Imagine that?!? All comes back to ownership not being able to spend any money, and it is wasting an absolute GOLDMINE of pitching. It's amazing that even in one of the most highly anticipated seasons in a very long time, I find a way to be disgusted with this franchise. Maybe I just have a shit attitude and I would love to eat crow on this. Going forward, I'll try to just enjoy the season for what it is, which is very entertaining baseball so I can't complain.
