Wins are the least relevant number when evaluating individual players.

Absolutely..... it's the stuff that doesn't show up in the stats that matters, the big playoff games.... oops!

QBs have the highest correlation to win/loss record though by far

Regardless all of those QBs on that list are getting paid big money because their teams believe they are or very well could be franchise QBs....or at the time of the contract believed that

Hoyer is making 2 million this season and Fitzpatrick is much closer to him than someone like Osweiler who isn't even close to being in a similar situation

Just because he figures to start for us does not make him worth more money

I keep saying it but there's a reason why no teams out there wanted anything to do with Fitzpatrick this offseason.....If he really is a solid or mediocre starting QB in this league someone would have went after him but he just isn't

The Jets team and honestly the horrendous schedule last season had more to do with Fitzpatrick looking OK than Fitzpatrick's talents....And other teams aren't falling for it as they see what he's been the rest of his career

From a fan perspective, wins and playoff games are a nice measuring stick. From a GM's perspective, they're not useful. That's because wins result from many factors outside the QB's control. So they don't provide as good a measure as stats like passer rating and the like.

While it's true that there's a decent correlation between QB ability and wins, that correlation isn't as strong as you'll find with other stats. So if you want to knock Fitz, use those stats instead.

Newsday has basically the same story - three years, $12M the first and no total. I did see one other statement somewhere that the average ia about $10M a year.

The Newsday article does quote Bowles as saying if Fitzpatrick comes on board "as of now" he will keep four QBs on the roster.

There is also a poll of readers asking who they believe will start game one and the results with over 1300 respondents are:

    Fitzpatrick 52%
    Smith 30%
    Petty 4%
    Hackenberg 8%
    Someone Else 3%

He was 24th in passing rating statistics last year.... you're right those are useful stats!

I wasn't the one knocking him for that...in fact we had 10 wins last year with Fitz and he wasn't anything special at all so I agree

Gang Green Nation wrote a great article about the possible structure of the Fitz offer. They predict a base salary of 6M per year plus a 6M signing bonus. Only this year is fully guaranteed. So Fitz pockets 12M this year and then can make 6M each in 2017 and 2018 if he isn't cut. Meanwhile the cap hit is 8M per year. 4M dead money if cut in 2017 and 2M in 2018. http://www.ganggreennation.com/2016/5/28/11804428/ny-jets-what-are-the-terms-of-fitzpatricks-offer

The Post also reported that Fitz can earn up to 36M if he meets certain incentives, but we don't know what those are.

If GGN's prediction is accurate, I can see why Fitz is still trying to get more.

Which is why I don't want to overpay him. But 24th in the NFL is not bad. And more advanced metrics and previous seasons rated Fitz higher.

I agree, to me the 10 wins are irrelevant in deciding what to do with Fitz.

Fitzpatrick is coming back. He and his agent are trying to push this as long as possible to make the Jets reconsider their offer and raise it. He's not going to retire and leave $12 million on the table. He's only earned $39,066,098 over the course of his career and this will likely be his last 'big' pay day. While $40 million is a lot to us civilians, it's not as much money as most people think for an NFL athlete likely living a higher price lifestyle with five children.

He'd be a moron to let his agent essentially end his starting NFL career over a $3 million gap in negotiations. This will also likely be the best situation he can be placed in to perform at a high level. Teams that could potentially sign him in the future won't have an offense with weapons like Marshall/Decker/Forte/Powell at his disposal (backed by a playoff calibre defense), and he'd likely end up somewhere like the Browns as a backup or stop gap without the ability to put up big numbers to earn another contract.

He's coming back, boys. Stop worrying so much.

Not sure if any posted this link earlier in the thread but its well thought out and shows how some of Fitzpatrick's TD's last year were more to do with scheme or WRs ability rather than Fitz

    http://presnapreads.com/2016/03/28/chan-gailey-new-york-jets-dont-need-ryan-fitzpatrick/

    It concludes
If you’re relying on Fitzpatrick’s touchdown-to-interception ratio to sell him as a quality starting quarterback, you need to understand the context surrounding those numbers. Fitzpatrick wasn’t elevating his teammates with precise throws where he was able to exploit the defense because of his intellect, he was just another piece in an offense that wasn’t especially reliant on him. A turnover-prone, weak-armed quarterback who has major accuracy issues should never command big money, but especially not in an offense such as Gailey’s with the surrounding talent the Jets have given him.

In this the QB throws to the laces - Marshall adjusts BRILLIANTLY and then puts moves on - TD in spite of Fitz's poor throw
    [IMG]

Based on what we have seen to date most will agree preference is for Fitz to return

The continued stand off however will either make him less neccessary - if Geno or Hack have strong OTA showings and look good in Gailey's offence - based on the article it does not require a "cerebral QB" so also helps Geno (and Gailey's schemes deal with those who question Geno's mental ability) - or make the Jets up the offer if Geno bombs

Personally do not have a favourite - just want the best option under center week 1 and that person nay not even be discussed to this point - per the poll ralebird found
    Fitzpatrick 52%
    Smith 30%
    Petty 4%
    Hackenberg 8%
    Someone Else 3%

So your SOLE gauge of intelligence is the Wonderlic?

And you think Geno is a "smart" football player? And person?

    Got it.

This situation is really pretty strange. It feels like he is holding out rather than a free agent.

There are 31 other NFL teams, and NO ONE ELSE WANTS HIM. And yet he is saying no to 12 fucking million.

Screw him. He is not the future of the Jets. We are not winning a championship with him. Let him sign as a back up for the Jags for 2 million. He did this with the Bills, got a big payday and sucked ass in the same system.

Fuck him and his beard. I'll watch Geno throw picks and hope Hackenberg gets the job mid-season.

Seriously. We are talking about Ryan Fitzpatrick here.

It's not the Jets fault those QBs are drastically overpaid. Their performances do not justify being paid $18m+.
