I like that idea but I'm assuming that these guys would be paid in your proposed academy? If not what would be the incentive for grown men to join it? IF so don't you see college players bailing for this academy left and right...? I think a minor league system would work if you keep the NFL age requirements in place and you have NFL owners own their affiliate franchises, that way they are vested in its success and paying the players. It would be a good way for the NFL to experiment with their wacky rule changes first too. They could see how moving the extra point back works in the NFL AAA first before putting it into the NFL. Guys like Mettenberger get another chance to show their stuff and the NFL expands into markets that dont already have football.
As camp arm, I wouldn't have any problems with the Jets bringing him in, but I did hear on Sports Center that Mett had some character and maturity concerns. Since he's still a developmental project, I wouldn't want him taking time away from Petty or Hack, either.
I think expanding the practice squad would be somewhat beneficial as well. While you can't have 45 guys on it, 20 or so dudes on the practice squad could at least open the door to turn at least one of them into a prospect. Or perhaps add some sort of investment into coaches that are appointed by the head coach and front office to coach these guys up in the system. It would give teams the ability to take extremely raw athletes late in the draft and turn them into something by the time they're 26.
This is a Mettenberger thread correct? I just found out 1/2 hour ago. Was he released earlier in the day.?
Mettenberger had a better college career? LOL by what metric? They both only started the last two years of their college career. Petty played in a few games in both his freshman and sophomore seasons and Mettenberger played in a few games his sophomore season. With the team Mettenberger had around him, LSU should have won at least one national championship, if not a couple. In 3 years he completed 61.8% of his passes for 5,783 yards with 35 TDs and 15 interceptions. In 2 years at Baylor, Petty completed 62.7% of his passes for 8,195 yards with 62 TDs and only 10 interceptions. Sorry, but your statement is utter BS.
Come on, guy. You're better than this. That's another absolute BS statement. There's no way Mettenberger would have ever been a 1st or 2nd rounder with his play at LSU.
How would it hurt us? By taking away snaps from Petty and Hack that could slow their development. He could also be a distraction. On Sports Center today they said that the Titans released him because of Maturity and Character issues and that he was a distraction in the QB meeting room. We don't need that.
Were Goff , Wentz and Hackenberg so much better in college? The demand on QB's is insane these days. The only thing going against Mettenberger right now is that teams have seen him play a little bit on the pro level.
Pro offense > Spread offense If Petty put up those numbers in a pro offense in college he would've got taken 1st overall. This isnt rocket science.
I disagree. The Titans cut Mettenberger in favor of freaking Matt Cassell. Doesn't that tell you something? They said Mettenberger had character and maturity concerns and was a bit of a distraction in the QB meeting room. We don't need a clown like that. He hasn't improved much, if any in 3 years in the NFL, and hasn't won a single game as a starter. He doesn't know our offense, and probably isn't a good fit since he isn't very mobile. I don't think there's any way he'd beat Geno out. Geno would have to throw 30 interceptions in TC or get punched out again in order for Mett to beat him out. Are you sick today and on meds? Your posts are not up to your usual standard.
Put in a claim for Mettenberger. If Jets get him, drop Geno. Would not really change that much of the dynamic. Fitz could still come back. Training camp battle for Mett and Petty. Instead of Geno being the odd man out at the end of camp, it could be Petty or Mettenberger.
I've addressed this previously in this thread. Since when are the Titans known for making great decisions , and none of us know the behind the scenes dealing with Mettenberger and his agent.
Goff and Wentz decidedly yes. Hackenberg, no. It's funny that you cite Mettenberg's pro experience as a negative. Most people would claim that as a positive factor, and in fact you seemed to in an earlier post when you said that Petty and Hack wouldn't even be considered for the starting spot and that a competition would be between Geno and Mettenberger.
I disagree. I think that's just a dumb prejudice. If Petty can learn to read Ds (and there's no reason to think he can't, since he's smart, has a great work ethic and did some of that in college) he'll do just fine in the NFL. Mettenberger's experience in a pro offense hasn't helped him much since his biggest weakness is said to be reading Ds and be slow in making decisions. You're right, it isn't rocket science, but you're trying to make it so, and missing badly.
I disagree. But the unknown is usually a more appealing way to go for most teams. Thats why dumb GM's like the one for the Rams and Eagles mortages their future on prospects that might not be any better than a guy they could've signed in free agency. And Im not citing his experience as a negative. Im saying that its probably a negative in the eyes of a lot of GM's right now.
If Sports Center is accurate in their reporting, then we DO know the reasons why the Titans cut Mettenberger. I took my father to the doctor's office today and saw part of Sports Center while waiting for him to see the doctor. On Sports Center, they said the Titans cut Mettenberger because of character and maturity issues and because he was a bit of a distraction in the QB meeting room.
Yes, I do. I've posted it 3 times now in this thread, and everyone seems to be ignoring the reasons why the Titans cut him.
