I agree with everything you say. My point was simply that they wouldn't have to cut any players in order to get Fitz. Clady will be our second biggest hit next year at 10.5m.

There is no market for him though. If teams were offering him $14 million a year left and right we'd have no choice. He priced himself out of the market as no one wanted to give him that and commit to him as a starter. He won't get more than Hoyer got and if he does he tops out at what? Maybe $4 million a year?

The Jets are being more than generous. If they bend to him, Maccagnan loses all negotiating power with agents and players. "Well you gave Fitzpatrick more money." $10 million or walk. It's more than fair, considering he'll probably be sitting on the couch if he doesn't take it.

So the act of negotiation makes one side lose the power to negotiate? That's quite a stretch. Have you ever negotiated a job offer?

I'm not sure what your point is. Perhaps I exaggerated a bit, in him losing all negotiating power but it certainly hurts it. But if they cave to Fitzpatrick why wouldn't agents and players want Mac to cave to their demands?

My job offers have never had public leaks to the rest of the company or the rest of the world that hold my position. Have yours, ace? Didn't think so.

Exactly my point, "Ace." Some jobs (think public sector) have published pay scales, there is no negotiation and everyone knows what everyone makes. I have never worked for an organization that required posting of wages so I was free to make the best deal for myself, maybe better than the guy next to me, maybe worse, but I was free to ask for the moon. There was never any "caving" by me or an employer; we simply got to the point that would be acceptable to both parties. It is not dissimilar to buying a car or a house - you negotiate! Sometimes you need to play hardball, sometimes you don't.

These guys all understand the negotiation process and know that each player's deal stands alone. Nobody gets hurt by making a deal and previous deals can act as a benchmark but I'm certainly not settling for less because I'm concerned about raising the benchmark. Is that what you want from Fitzpatrick? Is that what you'd do for yourself?

I wasn't speaking on behalf of Fitzpatrick in settling for less, I was speaking on behalf of Maccagnan and not raising the value he has assigned to players because he gets desperate and wants them back into mid-July.

On a professional basis, one would think these deals stand alone, but if you think other players don't push for each other's contracts because it can one day reflect their own you're crazy (see Michael Bennett saying he felt underpaid and publicly endorsing Kam Chancellor screaming "pay him" in his return on national TV. See Sheldon saying Mo Wilk needs to get paid). You think they're just helping their buddy or are well aware that they gain leverage when a GM is consistently folding to a players demands?

I'm glad Mac hasn't budged and uses his personal value system on players. He has a top value he'll pay and that's it. We'll see how much that waivers as we get closer to training camp and the possibility of Geno starting becomes a lot more real.

You say Mac hasn't budged, but you don't really know. You say he has a top value he'll pay, but you don't really know. You don't really know what Fitzpatrick will agree to either so why get all worked up about this? No terms are non-negotiable until a deal is signed or the parties walk away from the table for the last time.

Time to sign Fitz, he didn't blink, offer him 10 mil per year then put him in the FO after he retires. It would be nice to have someone smart in there for a change.

Glad you are not our GM.

Because he didn't blink the Jets should?
Mac and the Jets have all the power right now. there is not a single team in the NFL looking at Fitz as their potential starter right now.
Giving him anything more than a 2 year, 10 Mil (5 per) contract would be asinine.

I haven't seen anything that warrants putting him in or that he would necessarily be good the front office, not sure where that comment comes from.

And pay him that with what? Who do you want to cut? Or is your idea to sign him to a three year deal so we can push it all into years 2 and 3?

Actually, a few simple restructures to skrine and decker, who both are young enough to be on the roster for the duration of their contracts, will free up enough to get it done. Cimini did an article on it yesterday.

This is not a huge issue. The media will try to paint it as a big issue because they want to sell ads but realistically the most likely thing that would happen next season if Fitzpatrick QB'd the Jets is that both he and they would regress towards the mean on the way to 8-8. That's maybe a game better than you'd expect out of Geno Smith and the Jets. The chances of a playoff berth are iffy with either QB for the year. What Fitzpatrick would bring is less turbulence around the position on the way to that mediocre finish.

That's not worth committing good money over 3 years to a late-prime QB who has been below average over the course of his career. Think of Fitzpatrick as like a poor man's Vinny in that regard and we've already gotten the career year out of him, we just don't know if he's going to get hurt next year or his performance will decline back to more normal levels given his career record as Vinny's did. The leadership is there, as it was with Vinny, but how can you mortgage the future to a late prime player who was never great to begin with and in many cases not good? That would be repeating the mistake the Jets made with Vinny after 1998.

I totally disagree. You don't pay a 2-down DT $9-$10 million a seeason. The Giants are nuts.

  16. How about none of the above?

Jets can pretty much hold Wilk's feet to the fire for the next 2 years w/o committing to a long term deal. What's he gonna do..?Pout?Demand a trade? Dog it on the field? The market has spoken by the lack of trade options.Nobody wants to pay him Watt money. If he dogs it his value decreases & he loses the little leverage he has in seeking the highest possible salary. On the field he compliments Leo & Sheldon quite nicely. He may not be totally thrilled but he really has no choice.

There's so much talk about keeping Fitz for this year..I don't understand the urgency. The offense was largely anemic all year...they scored when they had to...that's about the best anyone can say. Quite frankly many of those scores were just prayers throw in Marshall's direction or quick hitches to Deck when the seam opened up. I'll give Fitz credit for rallying the horses after the punching incident..but beyond that..he was far from a good QB.

I'll take my chances w/ Geno. Everybody hates the turnovers but ya know what? If our D is so damn good they can handle a couple mishaps on O. Geno has consistently moved the offense down the field regardless of the skill players around him. That's more than Fitz can say. We as fans need to stop completely freaking out over every single turnover.Yes turnovers are bad but fear of turnovers is even worse. Fear of turnovers leads to ultra conservative, predictable anemic offense. With a great D that might've won 20 years ago.But this is the modern NFL...You gotta be able to move the ball & put up points.Geno can do that.

There's no reason why Fitz WOULDN'T be happy to sit home this summer or somewhere on a beach with his 5 kids while his agent is back home getting him the biggest pay day possible. If Fitz 'holding out' till the start of training camp gets him and extra Mill or two, why wouldn't he sit the summer out?

He knows the jobs sitting there. He knows Macc wants him back. There's really no reason to sign 'early' for less when he can sign 'later' for more.

Fitz will sign just before camp and walk through the doors a hero to his teammates.

    Book it.

Now if Fitz had a fastball like Vinny's, I'd be okay with spending some more cash on him.

Agree with you on this. MMac is simply taking advantage of all the leverage he is allowed to use. Mo is a victim of circumstance & time (having SRichardson & LWilliams fall into our lap by drafting BPA).

The only thing I'm curious about is what were our demands in a trade? What offer (if any) was on the table? We couldn't snag a late 1st rounder?
I mean San Fran traded their 2nd (37), 4th (105) and 6th (178) to get the 28th pick from KC. And SF used it on a f--king GUARD (Joshua Garnett)!!!

we can keep both. plenty of cap room next year. sign mo long term and have a low cap this year and a high next year. Right now he counts 17 million (roughly) against the cap. We can get that down to 10 mil with a LTD and use that 10 mil in cap room for fitz
