The fact that the Titans signed Cassell to be the backup because they didn't trust him to be the backup entering his 3rd year tells me all I need to know.
okay I can't prove anything about Petty and Hackenberg.. I'll err on the side of caution for this argument and say they both suck. Mettenberger though would be our best option. Because of a change of scenery????? lol. Tell me something about the player that is good. because I dont see anything. He is big and has a strong arm. We have that in Hackenberg now. Oh- wait actually can I prove Hackenberg is big and has a strong arm? I don't want to make anything up
If we're gonna go by PFF rankings , Titans had the 28th ranked offense in 2014 , Jets were 13th. Not really too similar IMO.
I wouldnt say either "suck"..they just both arent ready to be NFL QB's. Mettenberger atleast had a better college career than either and would've been a 3rd or 4th rounder had he not gotten hurt and could've been a decent pro at this point if he landed in a better situation. So in your mind Geno can improve but Mettenberger cant? Doesnt add up.
Mettenberger did not have a better college career than Bryce Petty no way in hell. No way in hell he had a better college career than Geno Smith either. Those 2 on that LSU team and they are national champions . Mettenberger had a better college career than Hackenberg- yes. But the Hackenberg Penn State discussion is obviously complicated. I have to ask - did you even watch Mettenberger in college? he would've been a 3rd or 4th rounder? lol - the guys you are comparing him to WERE 2nd and 4th rounders
Didnt say he had a better one than Geno. Geno was a borderline Heisman candidate his last year at WVU. But Mettenberger also played in a pro style system so saying that he didnt have a better college career than Petty and Hack takes a little more than just looking at stats. I never thought Mettenberger was great at LSU , but guaranteed if he came out the last two years he would've been a 1st or 2nd rounder. Just the way it is. At this point I would bet that Petty doesnt even start 10 games in his career.
I would be open to taking him and competing at camp, but at this point, I think even Geno Smith has a much better grasp of this offense than Mettenberger can come into. There's no way I'd ever consider letting Petty or Hackenberg go for a failed Titan QB.
Those are sacks against rankings. I guess if we're going by that stat and that stat only they are similar. But Im going by everything which has the Titans in the lower half in pretty much every category. Jets had 2 Hall of Famers on their oline in 2014 still playing at a fairly decent level. To say they are 25th just because of one stat category is crazy.
No it is not just sacks against, it also took into account everything. I think NFL.com is more credible than PFF or no?
i watched a bit of that lsu team that year. mettenberger kind of carried that team to the success they had. he was very very good for them. to say that geno smith would have won a national championship with that team is silliness.
Okay- this is what you are arguing. And please correct me if I'm wrong: "Mettenberger would be a better option at QB than anyone currently on the roster.. Because he didn't have a better college career than Geno Smith, and he did have a better college career than Petty and Hackenberg so long as we ignore results and factor in that he played in a pro style system in our comparison to Petty. Petty and Hackenberg we can't say anything about how good they will look in the NFL though, despite where they were drafted , because they have no experience. Mettenberger's experience is bad but he would've been a 1st/2nd/3rd round pick though if not for injury"
You mean Cam Cameron, Jarvis Landry and Odell Beckham carried that team to success . Don't give him too much props there. I think Geno could've had the same success with that cast of characters. Heck, he might've been more ready for the next level.
You're still going under the assumption that Petty and Hackenberg are actual options for us to start Week 1. I think some wacky shit would have to happen for that to even be a possibility. Bottom line is Geno Smith will be starting for us if we dont resign Fitz and dont bring in a QB like Mettenberger to actually compete with him. And in a fair competition , Mettenberger would beat him out.
beckham and landry were huge weapons but what i remember is mettenberger standing out and delivering balls to the receivers. now i think cam cameron, as much as i dislike him as an nfl coordinator absolutely made a HUGE difference for the guy. i will give him all the credit in the world for that season. he may have, but i dont see it. the guy couldnt even take a snap from center at that point in his life.
Mettenberger is not conclusively better than Geno. And at least Geno knows the offense. So I would prefer Geno.
At this point in our current situation, how would it hurt us to bring him in for training camp competition? We have no QB. Why not try as many QBs as possible until one shows something. Let them battle it it and if Mett loses, then cut him and we're in the exact same situation. I get that he doesn't show much promise being cut as a backup over Cassel and what not. But I stand by the fact that this team needs to keep swinging for QBs until one connects.
I think Cam Cameron was a big time difference maker that allowed Mettenberger to fulfill his potential as a college QB only. The guy that stood out to me on that team was Landry, that guy could catch anything thrown to him. I hate how he's in Miami and we have to face him twice a year, he's a pain in the ass.
