He's even cheaper now. There's really no downside to releasing Geno right now and paying Mettenberger that salary.
Based on what? Every argument I hear about Geno is that he "never played with any talent around him"..well Mettenberger has played with even less. I dont want him as starter , but Id much rather have him in a competition with Petty , over Geno.
Mettenberger was just waived by the team that drafted him and then played him as a rookie. There's no way they make this move unless something happened behind the scenes that convinced them that moving on from a very cheap young backup was the only way to go.
based on everything. You realize Mettenberger is 0-10 and has had turnover(s) in every single game he's played in. The titans are just trying to play out the string in week 17 last year and he was so horrendous they had to bench him for Alex Tanney, a DIII kid, just so they could move the football a little bit. Mettenberger is fuckin trash. Geno Smith is pretty terrible but he at least belongs in the NFL. Mettenberger would lose any competition easily against Geno Smith or Petty and would be a waste of practice reps here
They realize now he is a bad QB with a bad attitude and work ethic. They'd rather give reps in practice to guys that have a chance in this league. That's why they moved on from Mettenberger for nothing
There is a reason that he is 0-10 and it goes beyond him being horrendous. Im not so sure that Geno's record would be much better if he played with a roster that led the Titans to the 2nd worst overall record 2 years ago and the worst overall record last year. Their team as a whole has been garbage.
Idk what Geno Smith's record would've been in Tennessee. Who knows. But he is not as horrible as Mettenberger. Mettenberger wasn't even good in college with an all star team around him. Every time I hear takes on this kid I just shake my head. Any other 6th round scrub cut in year 3 because his team would rather roll with awful Cassel and a D3 kid as backups would be considered "camp fodder" or working at the snack bar no questions asked. He is not good and he has a poor work ethic. It would be a waste of time, especially on THIS jets team with 3 better young QBs already employed and facing limited reps.
Whether Petty and Hackenberg are better is yet to be proven. They could both easily be just as bad and either way arent ready to start IMO. Mettenberger atleast has some starting experience, even though he was thrown into the fire too early too, and could be halfway decent with a change of scenery. Anyone pining for Petty or Hack to start out of the gate should look at Mettenberger as a great example of starting too early. And he was a 6th rounder because of injury.
you have yet to tell me why he "could be halfway decent" though. We can't prove Petty and Hackenberg are better but Mettenberger "could be halfway decent" ... ok?
How can you prove that Petty and Hackenberg are better pros when neither have taken a snap at the pro level? A change of scenery plus a better offense around him is reason enough to think he could be decent. Im not here saying he can be a star , but if he were to sign here today he automatically becomes our best QB option.
