I'm not saying he 100% the reason, but he did have the final say. It depends who you want to believe who engineered that trade. He does have 3 SB as a owner/GM. So if he didn't have anything to do with the trade. At least as a GM he was smart enough to hire someone who won him 3 SB in 4 years.
I'll believe Johnson engineered the trade as Jones hasn't done shit without the guys Johnson drafted/signed. Robert Kraft has 4 SB's as an owner, is that because of him or Bellichicken/Brady?
I'll just leave this here http://profootballtalk.nbcsports.com/2012/11/07/jimmy-johnson-calls-jerry-jones-g-m-claims-a-crock/ He was just the owner. Because it was in my contract that I had total responsibility for all football decisions. It was in my contract, and he didn’t allow anybody to have that in their contract after I left.” and this http://www.cbssports.com/nfl/eye-on...dve-won-5-super-bowls-if-jimmy-johnson-stayed Jimmy Johnson coached the Cowboys from 1989-1993 and in that time he led the team to two Super Bowl titles. He left Dallas before the 1994 season primarily because he and owner and general manager Jerry Jones didn't see eye to eye on personnel matters. (Specifically: Johnson's contract gave him sole control of personnel decisions and Jones wanted to share the duties. It didn't happen and the men parted ways.) But Hall of Fame wide receiver Michael Irvin, who spent his entire 12-year career in Dallas, thinks the Cowboys could have won a lot more championships if Johnson had remained the coach. “When Troy (Hall-of-Fame quarterback Troy Aikman) and I get together we look at each other — and I'm telling you there's not a time we don't get together (and say) ‘We should've at least had five ourselves,' “ Irvin said on the latest Talk of Fame Network broadcast. “We should've won five. We should've at least walked away with a minimum of five Super Bowls. “That's a minimum I really do believe that. You look back on it now, and if I had the sense I have now … if I had it then … we certainly would have won five Super Bowls. It just works out that way. It still gets to me, man. I'm telling you. It really does.” Instead, the Cowboys won a Super Bowl after the 1995 season -- coach Barry Switzer's second year on the job -- and won a playoff game the following season, but they didn't sniff another postseason victory until January 2010. In 2012, Johnson clarified Jones' claims that Jones played a major role in building the rosters that won those three titles. "The time I was with the team, I had complete and total responsibility over the football operation," Johnson said at the time. "That meant personnel, the draft, coaches, including the strength coach. Everything. It was always in my contract. ... When we signed that first contract, Jerry said, 'I'll be in charge of the finances, you'll be in charge of the football,' we'll make history." Jones, however, remembered things differently. “During Jimmy's tenure, the authority to hire the players was with the GM," he said at the time. "But it was agreed that we wouldn't bring a player into the organization that he didn't approve of. We were a team and it worked very well. In our unique circumstances, where the owner and the GM were the same person, in the case of a disagreement -- which we never had -- the owner had the ultimate authority.” And last summer, Jones reiterated where he stood on Johnson taking credit for the team's success. "Disloyalty ... I couldn't handle the disloyalty," the owner and GM told ESPN's Don Van Natta Jr. as to why he parted ways with Johnson. "Whether it was right or not, by every measurement you can go, I had paid so many times a higher price to get to be there than he had paid, it was unbelievable." Wherever the truth lies, it's hard to dispute that Johnson had a critical role in fixing the organization, which had three straight losing seasons when he arrived in Dallas. “There was no turnaround without Jimmy,” Irvin said recently. “Just the whole mindset of what Jimmy built and how he set our mind toward one goal. There were a lot of guys when we got here. And they were all wanting to have (their own space) and do their own thing. Some people wanted to make money. Some people wanted to be famous. Maybe some guys wanted whatever they wanted. (But) Jimmy was able to get us all on the same page. And that's what beautiful about winning championships.” If you wanna give Jones credit for hiring Johnson, go right ahead but if you wanna give Jones credit for winning those 3 Super Bowls you're wrong. That team was built by Johnson, coached by Johnson and it's no shock that once Johnson's guys departed even someone like Bill Parcells couldn't make them a great team again. I'll never say never but it's very unlikely the Cowboys ever win a Super Bowl with Jerry Jones running things unless he changes his way.
Like I said it depends who you believe. To be honest I don't know who to believe. They both have huge ego's so who really knows. But you can make points for both sides.
I'll believe history, Jones is now going on his 27th season as owner of the Cowboys and they won 2 SB's with Jimmy at the helm and one with Switzer using Jimmy's players. They've won 1 playoff game since what 1996?
He was a new owner with no clout and a horrible team, he hired Jimmy and at that point Jimmy hadn't won anything so Jones didn't feel he was being overshadowed by Johnson just yet. Maybe Jones said yes but I doubt he had anything to do with the bones of that trade.
[Not quite on topic] Speaking of high draft picks for RBs, this video keeps making me laugh http://www.sportingnews.com/nfl/new...ma-roll-tide-video/1jy1scu7j4rpw1rnx6pxyq2fai
Jerry Jones built those Cowboy teams? Lol. That was Jimmy Johnson's doing 100%. Jerry Jones is a great business man but he is an idiot when it comes to football. He should have hired a real GM decades ago. _
even since Jimmy Johnson left(1994) the Cowgirls have 10 playoff appearances and a SB title. In that same stretch our Jets have had 8! "real GMs" .. 7 playoff appearances and no SB titles. I dislike Jerry Jones big time because hes a classic d-bag. But hell he's at least proving that he can walk in and be, at the very least, just like any other average "real GM." I wouldnt say he is good at the job but I also wouldn't say he's bad at it either
That SB was won by Jimmy's team pure and simple as were a bunch of those playoff appearances. If he had a real football man he might have a dynasty--an owner willing to do anything to win coupled with a solid football man is a match made in heaven. _
I see your point. Hell I just wish Woody was fighting with someone that he the reason they won 3 super bowls.
They won the third one in spite of Barry Switzer. They might've won 4-5 in a row if Jones kept his ass out of it. His ego couldn't let that happen
If Jimmy Johnson had stayed one more year, the Cowboys would have smashed a champagne bottle over the heads of the '72 Dolphins, that team was unstoppable and didn't really need coaching to win a SB. The only that could ruin a team like that was the ego of Jerry Jones, who was an egotistical business man who had played some college football and thought he was King Midas. Jerry systematically destroyed that team and they been haven't higher than slightly above average in the past 2 decades because he can't help but try to micromanage the team into failure. I hope he lives forever.
