i wonder if Bruce carter and lee can be on the field at the same time on passing downs since they both very fast
kind of like us dropping Sheldon into coverage, while rushing Skrine? it's not an ideal scenario, but you can't be completely predictable to offenses. Lawson being an OLB will certainly see at least a small percentage of coverage responsibilities. Lee on the other hand, will a majority of coverage responsibilities, so i hope he's up for it. He struggled at times in coverage at OSU.
I respect Rex's defensive genius & I'm sure its more sophisticated than the final result but yeah..his overall philosophy has become alittle confusing & I strongly question his ability to evaluate & construct a multi faceted MODERN NFL defense.He completely over values size,arm length & defensive tenacity & devalues Change of direction/ability to close/explosion despite what he says in pressers. For years he loaded up on Defensive prospects here despite a decent core already in place citing improved athleticism & explosion. What'd we see on the field? The same inconsisent very good but not great bunch of stackers w/ virtually no movement skills outside of the cornerbacks & interior box. Looks like he's doing the same thing in Buffalo. They'll stack the run,bottle up average NFL offenses..but where's the explosion? Give credit to Bowles for recognizing the "need for speed" and contrast but it seemed pretty obvious what was missing to make the unit "Hum".Jets got lucky that Lee fell to them. Guys with his skill set don't come around every year..they are even more rare than the stud 2 way edge rusher the Jets have been seeking since J Abe. Does anyone doubt that Darron Lee would not have been a Jet if Rex was still at the helm? He might'e even taken Ragland at #20 under the same circumstances!
When did he struggle in coverage..ever at OSU? He routinely dropped into man & different zones w/ ease.Now I'm sure he got beat a few times but every LB does. He's fluid,rangy and closes quickly. He's about as good of a coverage LBer outside of a top 10 prospect(which many felt he was) as you're gonna find. Now can he get swallowed up in the running game,misdirections & screens? Yes. His weakness is ability to anchor and shed once he is engulfed.The hope is that he can elude some of those bigger slower blockers w/ his speed & agility while also relying on the monsters up front to keep him clean & on his feet.
I get the point, but it was happening so frequently that Mario Williams was complaining about it. I didn't see it all too much with Sheldon although he did do it a few times. I just think Rex's schemes are bland and haven't changed since the second AFC Championship game. He overloads one side and his defenses always show early giving the offense time to slide the protection that way and the quarterback to read the defense. He was a great defensive mind for a couple years. He does still field a quality defense. Great? There is no innovative element to it anymore as you and I are discussing his nickel back blitzing. He's going to be out in Buffalo real quick if they don't produce soon, especially after getting all the draft picks tilted to his unit.
I'd imagine them both being zoned up in the middle in nickle packages. Would be really effective. They both are playmakers that get after the ball very well.
I don't see McNeil anywhere in the discussion. He was ok not exceptional. McNeil was injured alot but he did have that great game in the playoffs against Cincinnati.
I couldn't disagree more. McNeil was a great RB imo, and would hold every Jets rushing record were it not for the injuries. He was a lot more talented than CuMar, just didn't have CuMar's luck with injuries
Freeman was great, so was Curtis. Let's be glad we had them. In another 50 years we might have 2 more.
Great is a stretch. 8000 plus yards in 11 seasons with only 2 years going over a 1000. Granted some very bad Jets teams but the great ones like Payton, Campbell and Martin still found ways to make an impact. His legacy is taking the NFL to court and suing for free agency.
It sounds as if you're judging him based on stats alone. Did you ever see him play? He could do things with the football of which CuMar could only dream. He was constantly banged up, and the Jets' OL was not very good either. In addition, the Jets had a very good backup in Johnny Hector and didn't have a HC like Parcells that built his offense around McNeil the way Parcells had his built around CuMar.
Listen man anybody that is compared to Brady or Gholston will always be laughed at. Just deal with it comes with the territory of bad Jets draft picks.
Sure did see him play from UCLA till he came to the Jets. Stats play a huge part in judging players. No one get's into the HOF because of what they might have been. Its all about production and if not production how you lift up and carry your teams regardless of who your coach was. Payton had some bad teams before Ditka. Its admirable you think highly of McNeil but, he was not better than Curtis Martin. And thank goodness for Johnnie Hector he was a team favorite.
