Doesn't the owner actually have the final say in the decision in terms of personnel and not Rex and Whaley?

Whaley probably not adverse to non guaranteed minimum cost tryouts with coaching staff familiarity..

It's not like the 8M we gave Cro.
Does that mean Bowles is calling the shots here more than Rex is there?

It means coaches always have a huge say in what players a team signs. Pretending Rex, or any other coach, doesn't have a big influence over the process is fun if you're an apologist.

coaches have input on the type of players they want, and they have direct insight into players they've worked with in past.

there's a big difference from input/insight, and suggesting the coaches are calling the shots.
it is the direct jobs of the FO and scouts to sign/draft specific players.

things in Buffalo are no different than here.
I actually think Whaley has been doing a pretty good job.

Or maybe he's drafting guys that fit Rex's scheme? Can't be that can it.........Rex is definately calling the shots in Buffalo even tho everyone except Jets fans know Whaley is the one calling the shots but he's def taking input from Rex. It's not like Whaley is sitting back twittling his thumbs while Rex works the phones/trades.......I'm pretty sure Rex has input on the picks like most coaches do.

    Dude, WHATEVER!!

Seriously believe whatever you want to!
What is this stupid need for Bills fans to crawl over here? Is is that slow of an OS?

If you wanna spice it up, just stick mic within 20 feet from Rex. Or better yet get Mehta to move to Buffalo. I promise you won't have a dull summer

It's not even about schemes and drafting - although that has had Rex's fingerprints on them. Whaley was a good GM until Rex got there and was building something. He incorporated a lot of moneyball principles: don't overpay for certain positions (RB), and he put an emphasis on character players.

I listened to the man himself speak on Buffalo radio about the importance of character. They asked him [I paraphrase] "What is one thing that would absolutely cross someone off your chart?" He said very clearly "Someone who has issues with other teammates" - - Rex comes in and they've signed/acquired numerous players that have had issues with other teammates, including some of the most high profile "teammate issue" cases that there are! Richie Incognito, IK Enemkpali, Percy Harvin... also he has strayed from the moneyball approach. gave McCoy (a RB) too much money for example.

So either Whaley has coincidentally decided to stray from his principles the day they hired Rex.. which would seem odd.. or the fat man is calling a lot of the shots. You can decide what you want.

    ---

As for this year's draft: Lawson is a good player, especially in the running game, but I really think you guys missed a golden opportunity. I'd taken a receiver if I were running that team. Josh Doctson opposite Sammy Watkins would've been scary. Rex is supposed to be able to coach up the defense, you could've lived without Lawson. But that's just my opinion - Lawson let Rex's kid do his laundry for him in college too so maybe that had something to do with it? idk.

Drafting a WR in the first round would have been a big mistake. Our passing game has Watkins, Clay, and McCoy. A rookie WR would have been the 4th pass option on a team that runs the ball first. We desperately needed a pass rusher.

A team that has a coach that runs jail break blitzes to generate pressure whether he has pass rushers or not, desperately needed a pass rusher? I'd bet Rex has one of the lowest 4 man rush or less percentages in the league. He loves running multiple defensive backs off the edge.

The 2014 Bills had 54 sacks, and 3 double digit sack guys along the defensive line while featuring a 4-3 front 4 pressure defense from Jim Schwartz.

Rex comes in and employs a heavy exotic blitzing 3-4 front and all three of those double digit sacking defensive lineman saw their sack numbers more than cut in half while only getting to the quarterback 21 times.

    Is this a fantastical coincidence?

I just don't get why even with us, Rex was always in search of these monster backer esque pass rushers (Coples, although bust either way), if he was never going to give them the space to operate. When you overload blitz you're trying to get to the quarterback via numbers, not by pass rush moves. Which is why if you're going to run that scheme, you can back off looking for these great pass rushers.

Not to mention the league figured out Rex's blitzes by the time 2012 rolled around. It worked when it shocks teams. Now every logical quarterback in the league goes with a dummy count, adjusts the protection after the defense shows their hand, snaps the ball with 4 seconds on the play clock and let's the offensive lineman maul the 195 pound nickel backs coming off the edge.

Wallllllah. This amazing schemes secret code has been cracked.

Bills Over Jets is probably discouraged at this point, so he's going to disappear for 3 months when this thread is on page 10, then come back to respond to some idiot talking about how Rex likes to suck toes.

He is an elitist like that.

You'd be hard pressed to find someone who loves the sound of his own voice more than Rex, what a fucking bag of wind.
