"Reported." You don't know though, do you? Why do you care? The guy is negotiating the best deal for himself. What's the big deal? How often do you do work for less than you can? How often do you spend more money than you have to for something you're buying? Why do you take issue with how much the guy wants to make? Why is it any of your business, you're not chipping in?
Right but if it's at the expense of losing Mo as the OP said, that's a horrible decision. 2 years of a mediocre QB vs keeping an all pro d-lineman is a no brainer. Yes your QB position may suffer in the short term but there's a bigger picture IMO.
The two have little to do with each other as the situations are entirely different. Fitz is a one or two year stopgap at a position of need who has no other suitors. If he accepts our offer he comes back. Otherwise he retires. Mo is a long term investment at a position we're good at who will bolt if he hits the market. I want him back but it will take 15-20M per year over a few years to do that.
We can't afford Wilkerson long term, so why pay him a million a game and let him walk next year. Get what we can for him and free up needed cap space. It's not just either Fitz or Wilkerson, we need money to sign draft picks, deals for FAs and pay for injury replacements during the season. Letting Wilkerson go with free up $15.7M which is enough for everything we need.
It'd be so nice if somebody had a 26 year old guard they were willing to let go for Wilkerson. Tackle would be pushing it but a good guard would be great.
That was my understanding of their salary situation. After D'brick retired, and they picked up Clady, and signed the draft class, I'm not sure there was a good $11 million left. What am I missing? Would love to learn more...
If injury is a concern to the extend that Fitz (or his wife) are willing to stop playing, there is an easy solution: sign as a backup somewhere for 3-4M and safely earn them carrying clipboard around. But that's not what he is asking for, isn't it? He wants to be a starter, i.e. Wants to risk injury. So long as there are $$ there. So pardon my skepticism, but I really doubt it's about his safety. That said, I actually think there is a fair chance that an agreement is already in place, and had been for a long time. Fitz gets to avoid TC and get to feel the market while Jets get to settle in-house $$ situation without undue haste.
I know it won't be popular (and I expect Archangel Stokes to strike me down presently ), but it seems to me that Geno007 is trying to shed the ridiculous illiterate persona he first adapted. Outside of occasional typo and hilarious request for Jets baseball jersery, 007 actually does pretty decent job grammatically and stylistically. Man love for Geno is still LOL, but he's got a point there as well. Maybe a year of watching + Marshal, Decker, Forte + realization there are no more fucking around as there are 2 pretty eager kids hunting for the starting position.... Maybe all of it finally got though the message that the childhood is over. Long shot, but weirder shit happened.
I'll give you a simple example. Let's say KingRoach is due 8m this year and 6 m next year. The 8m let's say is guaranteed but the 6m isn't. The Jets could reclassify the 8m as a signing bonus. A signing bonus can be broken up evenly through the remainder of the contract. KingRoach now has a 4m cap hit this year and a 10m cap hit next year with 4m of next years money being guaranteed aka dead money. So if the Jets cut me next year the 4m still counts against the cap.
Slauson really isn't that good. He's the definition of a replacement level player. Plug him into a line with 4 other good linemen and you won't be hurt by him much. Plug him into a line with another so-so player and he becomes part of the problem. The Bears weren't on the hook for a lot of money with him. He just wasn't worth the approx $3M the Bears were going to pay him this season.
After the Jets spending the last couple years on the Winters bandwagon Slauson looks pretty good to me. PFF seems to like him a lot. Also the fact that he can also play center is a plus.
The Chargers signed Slauson . I can wait for this Muhammad Wilkerson situation to play out. The Jets aren't signing him to a longterm contract, or tagging him again .( one year rental - on team that isn't going anywhere in 2016. By this time next year, when Muhammmad Wilkerson gone, and the Jets wasted 15.7 million on one year rental( didn't roll it over). Everyone is going to see that the plan I suggested, should've been implemented by the Jets.
No one claiming Ryan Fitzpatrick is the better player / investment over Muhammad Wilkerson. If the jets didn't have the defense line covered with Leonard Williams + company , than you pay Muhammad Wilkerson without even a thought. The Jets don't want to pay Muhammad Wilkerson the market rate , when they have cheaper defenseline options at the moment. So you're talking about a one year rental, that is going to leave next year for nada. Sort like paying Antonio Cromartie ( overkill at CB) last year , when the smart call was to save that money for this year. Again the smart call is going with the young Qb's, and rescinding the tag on Wilkerson( no one trading anything for him, and paying that big contract too ( like I been saying all offseason). The Jets are trying to develop two young Qb's ( that's the franchise salvation - the hope is one of them develops into that Qb). They are going to need to invest a lot more in that offense line- getting proven Offense lineman in Fa is expensive.( why rolling over the 15.7 million is smart. You put young Qb beyond a suspect offense line, and the chances of that Qb every developing isn't good.
The real mistake was letting Snacks leave to keep either Mo as a one year rental or Fitz for 1-2 years before we obtain or develop our QB of the future.
Oh, so you're talking conversions. That makes perfect sense. The only thing is this front office, while fairly new, has seemed to steer clear of pushing cap hits down the line to free up cap space. However, I still think that effects your total cap availability reducing roster options, whether this year, or another. Fitz is asking for a large chunk of change for this top heavy roster. This is not a 3 mil contract. This is at least $11 mil assuming they reach an agreement. We had 3 huge cap hits up top, until D brick retired. Now its just Revis and Wilkerson with enormous hits. Next year, add Sheldon to the list and assume Wilkerson will be gone. Revis comes off the year after (?) I think. I think in its limited run, the front office has shown a knack for being very prudent in their approach. They don't seem desperate for free agents, or to sign guys they bring in. They place a value, and stick to it. If it works for the player, so be it. That's why I think the story with Fitz will not change. This is not a, hey, we don't WANT to pay you. It's simply, hey, we can't pay you according to our plan. This is the best we can do without effecting everything else. Fitz has to decide if that is worth it, cause I do not see the front office caving. This will not only have ramifications this year, but it will effect negotiations in the future, especially if Mac caves now.
Its not nada. They'll most likely recoup a 3rd rounder in compensatory picks when he leaves and signs a huge contract.
No unlike this year when the Jets had limit cap space to sign free agents, next year they should have money to sign a couple of Fa . Signing Fa for big money, could cancel out losing Muhammad Wilkerson.( there is no guarantee they will get anything for him in 2018 if they let him go).
