It's interesting and also proves that those Penn State coaches have no idea what they're doing. There is a huge drop off with practically any coach from Bill O'brien when it comes to coaching qbs, but it seems like Franklin is just bad.
The huge wildcard here is Hackenberg's willingness to yet again change his mechanics in a major way. I've looked at a fair amount of film on him at this point and to my untrained eye he makes a lot of bad throws alongside a lot of good ones. The NFL is a 60% league right now. if you can't get to that percentage of passes completed your ability to be a good QB, let alone a great one, is significantly hampered. He's got to get to 60% to be our franchise QB. Can he do that? None of the evidence thus far suggests he's capable of reaching that threshold. It's on him to relearn how to effectively throw the football in an NFL offense.

Sot is doesn't mean he can't reach that goal. he has one thing after watching several of these posted scouting reports I have yet to see on any of our qbs when they were drafted. he has the ability to read defense pre snap and make adjustments. Never saw Geno do that in 2+ yrs. And after hearing some thee coaches speak and watch again with an untrained eye it already looks like he has made adjustments. Allot of those bad throws are because of his footwork.
So, besides the fact that I did watch all of the games over the last 3 years, I went back and focused on his first year. What I see is a kid who, 1 year out of high school, was on his way to a very good college career. Enter James Franklin and his freak show...enough on that. Back to what I saw...again, I saw a kid who was in the process of absorbing, successfully I might add, a pro style offense...the Patriots offense. I would be willing to bet had he had 3 years in O'Brien's offense he would have been the top 5 pick everyone had him pegged to be at the end of the 2013 season. Now, I have first hand information as to how bad a coach can jack up a player if they are trying to fit a round peg into a square hole. I've seen it. And, we've ALL seen it in Hackenberg. Jesus...the proof is in the video of the last 2 years. Chan Gailey is widely recognized as one of the better OC's at utilizing the talent at his disposal. Also, his work with QB's is, obviously, very good as well. What would make anyone doubt that he couldn't work with Hack? There are only a handful of folks in the NFL I'd trust with this and Gailey is one. And Bowles is the kind of guy that will support him...so....it's a win win.
IMO there's no "wildcard" at all. He has already said how switching to his right foot back confused him, through his mechanics off, and had him unsure and thinking too much. Anyone at all who has followed the NFL for any time at all knows that in order for players to play their best, they have to be relaxed, and letting their talent and technique take over. They can't be thinking too much out there on the field about what their assignment is or fundamentals. Hack made improvement between the Combine and his Pro Day and has been working to fix his footwork and fundamentals. He has admitted that he needs to move his feet more and I believe his hips and torso as well and not just throw with his arm. While he never hit 60% in college, I think it's a bit of a stretch to say that "None of the evidence thus far suggests he's capable of reaching that threshold." There have been numerous quotes from O'Brien and other previous coaches stating of his intense desire to be the best he can be and to be great, and of how he has an insatiable desire to learn and be the best player he can be. He's smart, has a great work ethic and desire to improve, great character, and is a very talented kid. I think there's plenty of reason to have confidence that he will reach that mark.
Oh....one other thing...for anyone who doubts Hackenberg having the desire and drive to see this thing through haven't been watching his interviews and/or reading what every single coach he's had since Pop Warner...this kid BREATHES football and I wouldn't put it past Gailey having to kick the kid out of the film room so he can get some rest! I really feel bad for his roommate having to live football 24/7! LOL
He already ditched James Franklin's bullshit school of quarterbacking methods, stepping with his left foot behind him. I don't think he's going back to the bullshit method ever again.
^ He was actually taking the shotgun snap with his left foot back so he could step back with his right for quick throws.
And they supposedly were running a scaled down version of the Patriots' offense. Fwiw, it apppears that Brady starts with his right foot back.
That was what I was talking about. His stance changed during the last two years - and he's back to the stance he feels natural with. P.S. I don't think there is a set rule for [which foot should be held back.] Pro for having right foot back is that, if the defense is right, you can fire off a pass immediately without stepping backward. [I don't know how often that is.] Pro for having left foot backward is, the transition of mechanics is consistent. Right foot always backpedals, with left foot as the pivot, be it 1-step quick throw, 3 step drop or 5/7 step drop. I'd prefer any motion that Hack feels comfortable and natural with. Just as a side note, Peyton Manning held his left foot backward. [But then, he'd line up with square stance as well.] Andrew Luck seems to hold his left foot backward. And so on. So - there you go. If Hack feels comfortable with left foot behind, then that's the stance he should go into.
It makes sense for what Franklin's offense is predicated on, especially with all of those hitch screens. Don't even think, step and fire immediately, so with the right foot back, the quarterback already has all the power behind their arm. It obviously wasn't the correct offense for Hack though.
I would blame a lot of that on the NFL. I'm waiting for the day that you only have to 2 hand touch the QB.
Re-watched some clips of Hackenberg and noticed some good and bad. One thing I saw his willingness to step up in the pocket. Geno, as we've all seen, would back-step and take off running anytime the pocket started to collapse. Hack's got a nice high release that will make it more difficult for defensive linemen to tip. I also saw nice touch on longer throws where he would drop the ball over defenders and hit receivers in step. I've said it before....we may have a diamond in the rough. I can't wait to see him this preseason.
Kid has to take something off his throws in the flats and in the short passing game. He rips it and maybe pros will be better at adjusting to those fast balls but that will lead to drops. 15 yards and out tho he's really good. Can't wait to see him, Smith, Peake, Amaro and Sudfeld develop over the year I feel like all of them could be really good pieces for us developmental wise
