ryan was a major player in passing the recent omnibus bill that increased spending and cut taxes which projects to add trillions to the debt.

I don't know a lot about his previous dealings but to me a fiscal conservative wouldn't sign off on a deal projecting trillions more in debt when we're already up to our knees in debt.

this included increases in military spending which seems insane to me considering the outrageous amount we already spend on military.

I don't believe we have many if any true fiscal conservatives in office.

The number of useful idiots is large. That doesn't mean that I think you or educated Libertarians are in the category.

When you stand up in front of a large crowd of useful idiots you run the real risk of being taken as one of them, although I don't think you're in the category.

Trump is trying to get the white racist vote at this point. He's making a concerted effort to do that with the way he runs his events. Black Lives Matter would never have shown up at his events if he wasn't trying the dog whistle to white racists and failing at that which made him turn up the volume to get them to turn out. Black Lives Matter never made an appearance at Jeb Bush's well organized but ultimately unappealing events. They never showed up at Marco Rubio's events. Neither of those candidates indicated any real interest in getting the KKK vote out. It's possible that they just used the dog whistle more effectively than Trump, however the fact is that the angry racist vote didn't turn up for their rallies the way it has for Trump's rallies.

If you don't think that the GOP at large has operated under Lee Atwater rules for the last 30+ years, well I don't really know what to tell you about that. Trump has played that card very visibly in this campaign and if you're standing with him you're likely to get mistook as a racist as well.

You're not a useful idiot nor a racist based on the way you post at theganggreen however birds of a feather fly together and many of Trump's supporters are both.

At this point? At this point he doesn't even have to try. The white racist vote isn't going to pull the lever for a woman or a Jew.

Right but the hardcore white racist vote often doesn't vote at all, particularly in national elections. Trump has been campaigning for the really hardcore right nationalists and white supremacists to come out of the woodwork and vote on election day. That's why he ducked questions on David Dukes and white supremacists when asked about them.

"I don't know enough to have an opinion." is a clear dog whistle to get those folks out and on his side.

Am I missing the humor? What would being racist have to do with not voting for a woman or a Jew?

I don't care for Trump but it's a difficult position when the alternative is Clinton and the balance of the supreme court. If I ever did vote for him it will be partly because people like Paul Ryan and you make me sympathise with him.

I'm sure the 12 remaining KKK members will really rock the vote though.

Okay, that's definitely true. I said a few pages back Trump would be drawing a bunch of votes from off the radar, and that's certainly a large subsection.

trump denounced duke several times. once prior to the interview where he danced around it and then at least twice afterwards.

I agree he shouldn't have had to have hesitated in the "famous" interview but how many times does he need to denounce the same endorsement?

his claim was that he didn't know who the groups mentioned prior to duke were and a bad mic. sounds like bullshit but he did denounce duke several times.

funny how duke keeps comimg up in the news btw. I wonder how much he's getting paid for that.

Do you think McConnell will somehow stop trying to block any justice appointment if HC is elected? Why wouldn't that continue for the next four to eight years?

Because there will be repercussions to being a strict obstructionist in this manner. The 2018 mid terms will set the stage for 2020 and right now the electorate does not consider the GOP ready to govern the country at large. 2 more years of no, no, no is going to be damaging to the party in a way that compromise on a a Supreme Court nominee will never be.

The current gerrymandering in the house in the south is like steroids. It's a great temporary advantage but it is causing the GOP to wither on the vine, as it allows people with extreme positions to win office in the House and move the party as a whole in directions that are completely unsustainable in a general election. They will be unsustainable at the local level in the next economic downturn as people begin to really hurt.

    hard to argue

Charles Hurt: "In the past 26 years, we have had just two Republican presidents. They were both named Bush. Under the two of them collectively, they raised taxes, nationalized education, oversaw massive increases in federal spending, more than doubled the national debt and launched a trillion-dollar interventionist war that we ultimately surrendered and put it on our credit card. This year, Republicans spent $100 million hoping to triple down on that Bush magic. They lost. And then they lost their party. Now, it is time to unify behind your party’s nominee."

W's the one that is going to have a problem. That was the missed step in the dynasty. I don't actually think there's going to be a problem though. Political dynasties are generally limited to two successful generations at best. The pileup of mistakes over two generations is enough to make the third really rocky.

In this case Jeb just caught the fallout that the third generation was going to get anyway because he ran midway between the generations.

H.W. in 1980 for the first time, W in 2000 and Jeb in 2016.

If the next generation wants to have real presidential aspirations they're either going to have to deal with the Tea Party or switch to the Dems. I think the latter is a better path to victory.

What about just giving up and living on the millions they have?

No one wants another Bush. At least the GOP voters got it right with respect to that.

Apparently Paul Ryan has said that he'd be willing to step down as convention chairman if Trump asked. Well alrighty then - I'd love to know the conversations that go on behind closed doors.

edit: SORRY, he only said he'd step down as convention chairman.

You guys know that if Donald Trump hadn't been born rich he'd be giving blowjobs on the street to pay for his heroin habit, right?
