Apply this logic to guys like Russell Wilson, Tom Brady, Drew Brees, Brett Favre, etc. Are these exceptions to the rule? Of course, but what makes you think we haven't hit on an exception? The possibility is there. I would rather take a gamble on Hack in the second round and fail than mortgage the entire future for a guy who could just as easily fail.
Good post. Re. Our big receivers, I was thinking the same thing. Watching his game replays, alot of Hacks's incompletes were high. There were at least a dozen throws into the end zone that the Penn WR's couldn't come down with where I thought Marshall would have just snatched the ball as we seen multiple times last year. Last year Fitz at times was downright inaccurate. But his WR's covered that up because they are exceptional and have a large radius. I think if Fitz isnt signed, any one of these guys can put up decent numbers. But the difference will be how these guys convert red-zone TD's. Fitz, Marshall and Deck were excellent at that last year (except against Buffalo) and Geno generally was below average in that stat without similar weapons.
If Andrew Luck, Jameis Winston, even Mariota to some extent etc. are there you can justify mortgaging the future for him. In a somewhat stronger class, Goff and Wentz are second round graded prospects. If they sit and learn, the gamble could be well worth it, but it's hard justifying the trading of all those picks for someone who won't be playing this year especially as fan pressure hits two big markets, specifically a new location for the Rams. They'll be thrust into action early. The entire front office and coaching staff will be tied to these two prospects for the duration of their tenure/these guys careers. If they pull an Akili Smith ownership will clean house (although I think they'll be around much longer than he was).
I agree. Why do you think Gettleman in Carolina drafted Benjamin and Funchess? They're both giant WRs. Greg Olsen is 6'5". When Cam is wild, he's wild high. In Marshall, Decker, Enunwa and Amaro (if he can stay healthy and catch), the Jets will have 4 receivers 6'2" or taller that are likely to be on the team and will help corral those high throws. In addition, there's Brandon Bostick (6'3"), Sudfeld (6'7"), Wes Saxton (6'4"), and Adrien Robinson (6'4") who could possibly make the team and help as well. Kenbrell Thompkins is only 6'0". It will be interesting to see if he sticks and if one of the others makes it, at least in part, due to his height and greater catching radius.
Didnt see anyone post this video analysis of Hackenberg. Apologies if someone already has. Its 8 minutes worth, and I think the reviewer was a bit critical of Hackenberg at the start, the throw he made to the WR in the red zone was terrific and the WR should have caught it, but good analysis anyway: https://mattwaldmanrsp.com/2016/03/03/rsp-boiler-room-no-27-qb-christian-hackenberg/
This thread is fantastic. It's where the truth lies, not the other dumping ground hack thread. This has opened my eyes and im feeling like we stole a franchise qb here. Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk
Matt Miller @nfldraftscout Bill Walsh said he just needed to see a QB make a great throw once. He could teach consistency. So Hackenberg. twitter.com/WildebeestMode… 2:09 PM - 5 May 2016
1. Paul 'Bear' Bryant says so. I'd give his opinion 100x more weight than I'd give yours. 2. AFL Jets drafted him 1st overall, while Cardinals drafted him 12th overall; and Jets gave him a near half a million dollar contract [a record at that time.] I'd give their scouting department more weight than I'd give yours. Seriously, if Joe was as mediocre as you claim, the guys above were smoking pot when they were doing their things. Give it a rest for crying out loud.
could also add the national championship, or all the Alabama passing records as facts of college success. this guy is unsuccessfully trying to create a narrative that simply doesn't exist. it's absurd.
Bill Walsh ain't walking through that door anytime soon. If he does, that would be one helluva story.
For anyone massively bored, Connor Hughes is tweeting live Hack updates. Connor Hughes@Connor_J_Hughes Oh my... A BOMB from Hackenberg deep to Quenton Bundrage. Dropped it right in his hands 50 yards down field. That's a throw #Jets
That doesn't mean shit to me, thus argument doesn't mean much to me either. I never viewed Namath as a great QB in the pros and I thought he was simply ok for his time in college. That's my opinion, you and others don't agree, that's fine. Just my opinion.
I am asking what your criteria is for a good QB. As for Bradshaw, he exhibited near 50% completion ratio, and horrible TD/INT ratio according to you.[51.5%, 212 TD/210 INT] So if that criteria says Joe is a mediocre QB, I want to know why Terry isn't. If you are saying Terry Bradshaw is also a terrible QB, then I will rest the case, as it is clear by now that you are not talking sense.
yes there is a reason, only 2 QB's in the draft were consensus 1st round picks, one QB was a split on whether he was 1st or 2nd round QB. The Eagles and Rams both mortgaged this years and next years drafts to get one of the consensus first round QB's. The tweener was gone by the time the Jets picked. So yes, there's a reason he was a 2nd round pick...and that reason is that he wasn't a first round pick.
