Bowles has his D-Linemen to build around(Williams) His Playmaking Slinebacker(Lee) Next he's going for his shut down Corner to lock up the outside and opposing #1s
I think Revis is still a shut down corner, though not elite. I'd love to see Bowles play Revis on the #2 WR and use Williams and safety/LB help on the #1 corner.
Frankly, depending on just how Davis managed to screw up he was both. A scarecrow(sans heart) when he took a stupid angle or just stood around watching a play happen and the Lion(sans courage) when he would actually make it to the play only to be trucked like the poor guy maning the door for Black Friday at Target. edited: seems I've dropped the ball with my pop culture references here. Adapt or risk getting run over. It amazes me how many times we let the Pats carve us up in the short passing game before we figured out that we needed more speed at the second level.
They almost sort of figured it out a few years ago. It worked once and the plan was subsequently scrapped for being far too logical.
and lee has got some size to go with the speed, at least enough o unload on wideouts downfield. that will be something for them to look out for.
He is a linebacker and he lined up there all season. Don't let anyone convince you otherwise. The Cardinals played a ton of National games this year. He was the weakside inside backer in Arizona's 3-4
I missed most of the show, but on ESPN's draft grades special they just showed the statistics that defense play in their sub packages (5 or more defensive backs) 65% of the time. Anyone worried that we drafted a specialist in Lee should no longer worry about his potential impact on the field. We may see a base defense on first and ten's with Harris/Henderson manning the middle in obvious running situations, but I'd bet Lee is featured in most 2nd and 3rd downs.
Awesome post yet, ESPN labeled him the biggest potential bust? lol I will say this though... This is nothing new. Victor Green was often used in the box which Is why I loved him as a player... LB? Safety? I think part of the deal is the last 10 years of top tier TE's Destroying LB's in open field and EZ play
The FO thought they filled it when they drafted Davis. He was 6'2" 235 in 2012 and was expected to be the fast LB who would blanket TEs. When he failed they had no backup plan for covering Gronk.
Nobody can cover Gronk for very long, best thing you can do is try to double up and bump the guy out of his space and even that doesn't work all that well. Our problem for a while has been 2nd level speed + coverage skills. Davis was fast with no cover skills, Harris has meh instincts but is slower than dirt; Pace on both accounts and everybody else we've generally used have been big nopes. I dare say that at times the D line guys Rex would rop into coverage showed better instincts(in regards to getting to the play,tipping the ball, etc) than the the LB's and in some case our DB's (I'm looking at you Dee Milliner).
