I was thinking Lynch where we picked Hack. No idea he'd go as early as he did.

The bust rate of QB's in general is pretty high. Way higher than any other position thats for sure. I agree that the Jets shouldn't be married to Hack because he was a 2nd rounder. But Geno Smith was a 2nd rounder too and they are still married to him even with poor play and dumb off the field decisions. But looking back to the 2013 draft , atleast Geno was decent value where he was picked. It was worth the risk. Hack isnt worth the risk IMO. What are the odds that he takes the starting QB's job and runs with it when/if that chance comes his way? Less than 1 percent? To me thats not worth a 2nd rounder.

As hard as it is to find a franchise QB with your 1st pick in a draft , its even harder to find one the further down you draft a guy.

Agreed, but I wouldn't say the Jets are married to Geno, they just haven't had anyone to push him off the roster. There's a difference between being married to a player and just keeping them around because you have no one that has pushed them off the table, so to speak.

While there's little argument that can be made that Geno should be the starter there's just as little argument to be made for booting him off the team because someone else on the roster is as good (and cheaper) or better (in terms of actual field play or real potential). Geno is still under contract and if the Jets don't sign Fitz he's probably the starter by default and if the Jets do sign Fitz then Geno is likely gone, pushed out by Hack and Petty.

That last post of mine got me thinking.

What happens if the Jets sign Fitzpatrick and don't cut Geno right away but keep him in to the preseason (I don't think there's any financial reason that they would have to cut him before roster cuts force a move on the 4 QB's.
But what happens if during workouts, practices and preseason games that Geno all the sudden looks like the second coming of Brett Favre? (purely an extreme hypothetical) or even Ken O'Brien (again an extreme hypothetical). Who do you cut? Granted my chances are better of winning the powerball, but under such a circumstance who do you cut? You can't carry 4 QB's.

I agree fully with that. Which is weird for a player to have one extreme happen or another based on if another guy signs or not.

But I still think Fitz signs , which IMO makes it even less sense why we drafted a QB this year. Mac must really be sold on this kids upside. He just needs to be right on it. The NY media/fan base doesnt have much patience in this area.

    mac disagrees with you

sounds like geno is a lock for qb2 at minimum going into camp. will be very interesting to see how mac juggles this

I still think they'll do everything in their budget to sign Fitz. I don't think they plan on starting anyone other than Fitz (or Geno as a default). That could of course change if either Hack or Petty really shines in TC and the Preseason, especially the scenario where Fitz isn't resigned.

There is a lot of posturing going on right now. Fitz threatening to retire if he doesn't get a big contract is, at least in part, posturing. The Jets saying they are fine without Fitz is, at least in part, posturing. Each side trying to leverage the other and neither side really having a whole lot of leverage, it's really in both parties best interest that he returns to the Jets for a season at 8-9M and I think in the end that happens. The Jets won't pull that offer prior to TC anyway and Fitz isn't going to walk away from 8 or 9M.

Any QB taken after the first is probably going to take a year or two in order to get their feet and be ready for the NFL, there are of course exceptions and maybe we have an exception in camp, but probably not..at least not for the opener or till midseason at best in a realistic viewpoint.

It can happen, or it can be a smokescreen. But in today's NFL with concussion protocols and such you really have to think long and hard about carrying 4 QB's. Most teams now area moving to carry only 2 QB's, and maybe one on PS if no one nabs them.
With all the Subpackages, specialty players and depth needed to cover for injury and concussion carrying even 3 QB's on the 53 man roster is becoming a luxury. It could happen, but I think it's more smokescreen if they resign Fitz. Granted there's probably no market for Geno, but there's always a chance they can get a 6th or 7th for him from some team in need of a Backup QB.

Never lay your cards openly on the table and hold them close to the vest. He could be telling the truth, but I suspect smokescreen for the reasons mentioned above. Just my opinion.

Why would he look like a buffoon? He has no idea where we'll be drafting next year or how collegiate QBs will perform. Who said it's going to be a better draft for QBs? It's a little early to be projecting that. One of the top prospects could suffer a season-ending injury early in the season. Another could have a bad season or see his HC and OC leave and go elsewhere, and sturggle in his new system.

Even if none of those things happened and it's a great draft for QBs, taking Hack shouldn't preclude him from taking another QB. He needs to find a franchise QB for the Jets. Even though he drafted Hack and Petty, he owes them nothing. He owes it to himself, the team and fans to get the best QB he can. Hack and Petty might not progress as rapidly as hoped or a QB with more talent and upside, or who is more NFL ready might be there within the Jets' reach. If there's a better QB there and could come in and start day one, imo he'd have to take him.

Even if drafting Hackenberg is a move to prevent the Patriots from getting their heir apparent to Brady, it's a great pick.

I think Macc had his sights set on a future starter (sooner rather than later) and knows the further down the draft he waited, the less likely he'd score one. Macc didn't like his QB options enough to burn his 1st, but he felt Christian in the 2nd was a risk worth taking.

None of those QBs deserved to be drafted as high as they were. NONE.

Because if we have a legit chance next draft to be in position to pick a Watson or Brad Kaaya , it would then be the 3rd draft in a row we select a QB , and each of em would be picked higher than the last. IMO a 2nd round pick should be a guy that you want production from Day 1 with and for the next 5-10 years. And we're flat out not going to see that from Hackenberg right away. If that was the scenario it would make the Petty and Hackenberg picks not worth their current value , whether they would be looked at as backups for us or trade targets for other teams , we wouldn't get back what we gave up in getting them.

True it is early , and lots could change , but QB's are always taken super early in draft as evident by what happened this year. Rams and Eagles traded up for QB's that arent a whole lot difference than a guy that Denver selected at the end of the 1st round and the guy that we took mid 2nd. Atleast the QB's next year and projected to be worth a 1st or 2nd overall pick.

I read somewhere that the Jets tryed to trade down and still get Hack but had no takers.

I understand what you're saying, but disagree. Based on what you've said, it seems as if you think Mac should have looked in his crystal ball and known what was going to happen each successive year, and shouldn't have taken either Petty or Hack and just waited for Watson or Kaaya next year.

IMO the ONLY important thing is finding a franchise QB...nothing else matters. If Mac were able to add either Kaaya or Watson and he proved to be the Jets immediate answer at QB, I don't think anybody would give a rat's ass that we couldn't get value for Petty or Hack in a trade (if that's even true, which I don't think it is) or would care that we had taken them rather than other players. Besides, one can never have enough QBs. If Watson is starting day 1, then either Petty or Hack would be the backup and the loser would be the #3. With the shortage of quality QBs in the NFL Petty or Hack could bring back picks at least equal to the picks expended on them, and probably better picks. If he had the chance to draft Watson or Kaaya and took another player, or traded down for a bunch of picks and neither Petty nor Hack panned out and Watson and Kaaya panned out, fans would be calling for Mac's head and rightfully so..

Well to me Mac knows how realistic it is that we get Fitz back. And even though lots of fans dont want him back , he is still the key to how successful we are next season. If we arent going to come to an agreement with him then its likely we're picking in the top 10 next draft. And considering that puts Geno on the outs , 2017 depends largely on the development of Petty and Hackenberg , so its probably likely we'll be targeting a QB early next years draft.

I dont think a crystal ball is needed to know that their are better QB prospects in next years draft than in the one we just had..that should be pretty common knowledge to any GM , especially one that isnt on the hot seat.

The crystal ball isn't needed to know that there are better QB prospects in next years' draft, but it would have been needed to know that the Jets would be in a position to get one of those "better" QBs, and again, shit happens. By the time next year's draft rolls around, that QB class may suddenly not look any better than this one.

I guess only time will tell with that. And I agree that drafts should never be used to concentrate only on the next season. The Leonard Williams pick didnt fill a need but it was BPA and might be looked at as a great pick if he turns into the player that Mo is once Mo leaves. In time the Hackenberg pick might look like a genius selection. But the odds are stacked against that.
