I am hoping for this to, a russel wilson occurrence happening in TC where the coaches have no choice but to put him in there. It really is not a bad position to start a rookie qb, all we have is large wide receivers with huge catch areas and a good defense to keep games close. We should all be praying this kid fixes his footwork in time to start the year.
I really hope they don't make the mistake of playing him right away. Give him a year to learn and develop. I'm so tired of throwing these rookies to the wolves and then wondering why they suck. ESPECIALLY this year, with this guy, because the first month and a half schedule is just brutal and there are already questions about if he's shell shocked. I'll be angry if they start Hackenberg week 1. It would be like such a waste. Fitz is just playin hardball. He will come into the fold before camp. You sign him, start him, drop Geno Smith and you roll into the season with Fitzpatrick as the starter, Hack as the backup and Petty as the 3rd (emergency QB). Let Fitz take on that gauntlet to start the season and teach Hackenberg how to be a professional. I will say, because that early season schedule is so tough and the second half is mostly home games, the schedule is set up nicely for a rookie/young QB to take over late in the year. I would not be against making a mid/late season switch to Hackenberg to close out the year if the team is struggling/out of contention, but I definetely dont want to see him as the starter week 1. Yes, even if he looks like the best QB in camp.
"Penn State. Perhaps no line in the Big Ten was more maligned in 2014 than this one, as PSU was last in the league in rushing. Offensive line coach Herb Hand did all he could to patch together a unit that was riddled with youth along with a lack of depth and talent. How bad was it? Christian Hackenberg was sacked 44 times last season. Last year at this time, just one Nittany Lion blocker on the first team had ever started a game. Now, PSU has six linemen who have started. It’s just too bad stud left tackle Donovan Smith turned pro early. Right tackle Andrew Nelson looks to build on a strong debut. JC transfer Paris Palmer will get a chance to fill Smith’s large shoes at left tackle. The interior figures to be manned by Angelo Mangiro at center with Brendan Mahon and Brian Gaia at the guard spots. Stay tuned for a unit whose 2014 seemed to be best encapsulated when Gaia infamously blocked linemate Nelson on a failed fourth-down rushing play vs. Northwestern. - See more at: http://btn.com/2015/06/08/unit-rank...en-east-offensive-lines/#sthash.MGh0thBV.dpuf" when you can't run the ball well and become one-dimensional, the qb stats will be affected. http://btn.com/2015/06/08/unit-rankings-michigan-state-tops-big-ten-east-offensive-lines/
Agreed. Though if they make the switch mid-season I'd prefer they go with Petty. See what he has given he will have been training for this for nearly 2 years. I think Petty would do just fine. Then, in 2017 have a competition between Petty and Hack.
If he has the level of experience with the pro offense that we believe he does, then once his mechanics are fixed and he understands the offense he should start. That might be first game of the season, midway through the season or next year. There's no substitute for experience. I think this is what the Jets will do. If after OTAs they're impressed with him and think he'll be ready to start by mid-year at the latest, then I think Fitz will not be resigned. That's why Bowles said as long as Fitz signs by training camp, he's good. That's because they don't want him to sign before OTAs. I'd be very surprised if this whole saga with Fitz hasn't pissed of Macc and the front office. If they can screw Fitz and make an example out of him they will. There's also been some indication that Hack's mechanics may already be mostly fixed because at the combine he apparently couldn't hit the side of a barn, but at his pro day months later they say he looked sharp and crisp. Most teams didn't go to his pro day and I think that's part of the reason for the difference in views on him.
they dont suck because they were thrown to the wolves. they sucked mostly because they suck. sanchez is a horrible qb. as is geno. russell wilson started as a rookie. that worked out well. andrew luck started as a rookie. that worked out well. matt flynn sat and developed. ryan mallet satdeveloped. matt cassell sat and developed. if hackenberg can play you play him. there is no substitue for live in game reps.
I've been reading a disturbing common "thought process" in this and all the other threads about Hackenberg.... I'll do it later but if someone already has it....the other 31 teams...in what round were their starting QB's drafted? I'd be willing to bet over 80% of them the guy was drafted 2nd round or higher. Now, if you are Mac and you believe in what you, your scouts and everyone else you have hired to help you build the NY Jets is telling you and Hack is the real deal...what do you do? Do you supposedly "reach" for what you feel is your franchise QB? Or, do you do like some on here have suggested and just sit around and "wait" for him to automatically fall to you way down at the tail end of the 4th round? What the hell do any of you know? lol lol Hey, same goes for me! If, 5 years from now, you told me we got our franchise QB in the 2nd round I'd dance a jig... What it all boils down to is does Mac believe Hack has the tools. I think he does. I think Chan Gailey is licking his chops right now. These players get the playbook the minute their drafted... I'd bet he has the playbook...some of it anyway...down. I'll lay $100 he has the concepts. down.
No ur wrong. For starters NY is different, it can break a kid faster and suffers from a crippling lack of patience. Sanchez and Geno Smith especially could've used time to develop. Hackenberg is no Andrew Luck and Russell Wilson is atypical. There is absolutely substitute for game reps its called practice and preparation. also you bring up silly names of guys that sat, what about the names of guys that sat and learned and it had a tremendous affect on their career?
If we make a QB change, I really hope they go with Petty. We need to see not only what Petty can do, but how well this coaching staff can develop a QB. Then you have your estimated guess with how Hack will turn out. 2016 is technically Hackenberg's senior year so this will be like having an all advanced curriculum for him (except without all the inconsequential school stuff.) Unless he wows, which I doubt he will, there really is no reason to put him on the field at all in the 2016 regular season.
It's funny how quickly things flipped with Rookie QB's. It used to be that you'd almost never see a rookie QB start year one. At some point in the late 2000's teams started throwing rookies into the fire with some success (and many failures) and it's been the norm ever since. The rookie cap makes it a lot easier to take this approach, but I still question the wisdom.
NY will not break this kid. Look at what he's been through. I think that's part of the reason why they drafted him. Practice reps, especially for a non-starting QB, are limited and they're usually nowhere near full speed. They also know the QB won't be hit. It has nowhere near the value of actually playing in a game. If you drafted him with the hope and expectation that he's going to be your franchise QB, then once he knows the offense and his mechanics are fixed, you let him play (assuming he knows how to run a pro-set - pre-snap reads, changing plays at the line, setting protections, etc.). He'll take some lumps, but hopefully he'll learn from them. The problem with Sanchez and Geno was they didn't learn from them. I think Sanchez must have set the record for pick 6s.
If Fitz doesn't come back I think we see Hack regardless. It's unlikely that any QB on this team is going to be produce a winning record through those first seven games. If the team is down and out quick, but the OL is holding it's own, Hack will see the field.
Talking about Jets. Actually I think Namath holds the dubious record but Geno has 2 or 3 more than Sanchez and he played 4 full seasons to Geno's 2. _
Ah, could be worse. I think Schaub had a 9 game stretch where he threw 6, including 4 starts in a row. That's unfathomable. In that stretch he threw 4 TDs to his team and 6 to the other team.
