Out of those 3 Petty is my guy. I liked him in college and hope he can beat out Geno. Or at least buy IK a plane ticket to come punch Geno out again.
I liked Petty in College, and firmly believe if he came out this year, he would have been up there with Wentz and Goff. I hope we re sign Fitzy and then cut Geno so Petty and Hack can develop.
I firmly believe Mac believes in Petty too. He literally is hoping either Petty or Hack become our future starter. He isnt giving up on Petty
I sure hope so. Because I believe Fitz will be back then we will have 4 QB's. I've seen enough of Geno to know I don't want to see anymore of him on the Jets. This staff and adminsitration has no loyalty to Geno since they didn't draft him.
I really think the Jets could bring in almost any credible vet as 4th option at this point and have a good competition in camp. Fitzpatrick will be less of a competition. He's going to be the presumed starter coming in the door for 2016. Hoyer would be a good competition.
No. Worst case scenario is he ends up in New England, Brady gets steamrolled on an opening drive, never to be seen again, and Petty catches that odd fever that makes him a Hall of Famer.
Honestly I don't care which of the QB's develop as long as one of them does. It doesn't matter to me if the light finally goes on with Geno and he lights it up. And it doesn't matter to me if it's Petty that lights it up. And it doesn't matter to me if it's Hackenberg that comes in and lights it up. They're all Jets and all I want is one of them to light it up. If none of them light it up this year we'll be drafting another QB next year and someone will get pushed out and the competition starts again until someone does light it up. I have no hatred of any of the current Jets QB's, I just want one of them to succeed and I don't care which...of course if two were to turn it on then we can groom one to trade for some picks
I don't hate any of them. I just think one of them is a hopeless retard. I don't know about the other two.
My take is that Petty was never drafted to be the franchise QB. He was drafted because his skill set far exceeded his draft position. There was a ton of potential, but also a ton of work required. He's a project, and due to the nature of our front office and coaching staff, that project has no time limit. They'll work with him and get the most they can out of him. If that means he's bound to be our long term #2 QB, then it's a successful draft pick. If he becomes more than that, then it's a home run. I think Hackenberg was drafted with the intention of putting in a little bit of work, and then getting a franchise QB. I think the FO is envisioning a future where 8 years from now Hackenberg is entrenched as the #1, and Petty is ol reliable at #2.
For me the rationale on drafting Hackenberg had nothing to do with Petty. What if Fitz does not re-sign and Geno gets the start, extra time in the system and the only current QB with any starting experience. He handled the situation well and played well that one game where Fitz got injured. Now let’s say Geno plays well and at the end of the year he has thrown for in excess of 3,500 yrds has 20 TDs 11ints and four rushing TDs and 3 fumbles. We would all be relatively happy but then the FO are in the same position as they are with Fitz, or it is like the Broncos with Ostweiler. You have a QB with 1 year of production who is now a free agent and other clubs out there looking at him and the cost of the contract suddenly sky rockets. If Geno had the stats I outlined (please remember this is hypothetical) what type of contract would he look for $10 million / $15million / $20 million a season? Then what do you do as there is no way in hell I would like to spend that kind of money on a 1 year wonder. So to avoid being like the Broncos you take a QB this year who can develop and who actually has the potential to be a FRANCHISE QB. You also have Petty who can push him and visa versa and you hope that 1 of the reserves now progresses to take over at a bargain cost. If Fitz resigns I can see Geno being the one cut after camp unless he out performs Fitz and takes the starting role – not sure Fitz will take the deal that now looks most likely a 1 year deal in and around €8 million as the only one that would matter is guaranteed so year 2 would be cut with no repercussions – why would you guarantee money for more than 1 year to a QB who is there to bridge.
It seems less and less that Ryan F will be the starter in 2016. Unless a miracle happens. But really it will be that of Geno Smith unfortunately. For the brief stage in 2016.
I think this is all an experiment on discovering QBs. You have one guy, Petty. He has the intangibles and the physical talent. He didn't have the X's and O's down, but the coaching staff believe he has the capacity to "get it". He had a very successful college career. You have another guy, Hackenberg. He has the intangibles and the physical talent. He has the X's and O's down. He was on the way to having a successful college career, before he saw it blow up for various reasons. You have two prospects who are almost polar opposites of each other, but both have great intangibles, physical ability as prerequisites. This will teach the coaching staff a lot about developing QB's, and what prospects to target in the future. By all standards, Bryce and Hack are smart guys who are NFL stock physically, so regardless of the outcome (which I think is bright) it'll at least be illuminating.
Gailey is already a great QB developer. I'm not sure how much more he needs to learn or can. This may be instructive to Mac and Bowles, and perhaps the QB Coach, but Gailey could write the book on developing QBs.
Gailey is old as hell. How much longer do you expect him to be around? He's not the one drafting these guys, Mac and to a lesser extent Bowles are the ones choosing. It's Gailey's job to take what they give him and try to make it work in his scheme, which he excels at. At the end of the day, he might have some say in it but he doesn't choose. This will give a little bit of insight on the importance of college production and knowledge of pro concepts weighed against each other in similar base prospects (large, satisfactory armed, intelligent QBs).
