On NFLN Casserly said he has a higher rating on Hack then he had on both Petty and Geno. Ray Farmer then said Petty in the 4th round was too rich for his blood last year. 2 former and our current GM disagrees with you.
I've been disagreed with before. I'm not sure how talented Hack is. I think he was drafted because of his potential to be a prototypical QB. He might suck awful bad. Like really bad. Or he might get fixed and be very good. _
"Petty admits to grappling with tasks such as hearing and calling the play, identifying defensive backs in coverage and identifying which player in the defensive backfield was the “mike” linebacker, the central part of the defense whose location teams base their offensive line protections on. “As crazy as it sounds, at Baylor, we did not point out the ‘mike’ linebacker,” Petty said. Petty was unfamiliar with making adjustments to the play or the formation before the snap. “Honestly, I wish I’d done a little bit more as far as being proactive to get into a pro style [offense],” he said, singling out the need to decipher fronts or coverages. “It was things I have never seen before.”"
Draft position for the most part is reflection of talent and college production. Hack did not have much of the latter, so that should tell you how talented he is or at least the Jets think he is. NFL success, however, is a product of a lot more factors. So if Hack ends up sucking, it won't be due to his talent or lack thereof solely.
Sure he has a good mindset and a great student of the game, both pluses. But it takes a lot more than just mindset, study habits and hard work to be a good NFL QB. It's the intangibles in his play that I didn't see on the field. The things I saw on the field that concern me are his lack of accuracy, holding onto the ball too long, not so good pocket presence, and poor reads. He also doesn't seem to have a good feel back there. Every now and then I would see him make a beautiful throw but those were few and far between. He had a good WR in Godwin who made a lot of tough catches last year. Sure I think he can fix those things but I think the likelihood of him not being able to overcome these deficiencies is a lot greater. I think it would take a miraculous improvement for him to be a long term solution for the Jets at QB.
That doesn't say he doesn't know what a Mike is. That was the offense he ran, not sure that's a reflection of how "smart" he is from a football standpoint. He may never have been called in to do something but that doesn't mean he doesn't have the mental capacity to do it. _
I'm not talking about whether or not he can do it, I was just saying that he didn't know as much as Hack coming out, which is expected seeing as he came from a spread and Hack ran a pro style. I remember last summer someone asked Bowles how Petty was coming along, and he said that he was still really far off because he was consistently calling out the wrong mike. I can look for that quote too, but that one is more of an indictment on his capacity. I think both QBs are very smart and with the right development and be at least NFL standard mentally
The thing with this pick is that you have to be willing to have faith that the last two years were more of a factor of the shit situation than the quality of the player. The situation was pretty fucking shitty, you have to admit. You have to be able to imagine that the top HS recruit who came in and started as a freshman efficiently commanding a pro-style offense can be groomed and put back on a good path by a quality NFL coaching staff like the one he did well with as a freshman. I'm sure that's a difficult thing to do if you've watched him suck for the last two years, I get it. This is what the Jets are thinking when they take him in the second round. Not having seen him play a down until he was drafted, it's a lot easier for me to hope for the best.
In Hack's case I think it was 95% based on his potential. His college production sucked and that was in large part due to his talent. Petty's college production was off the charts and that was due in large part to his talent and the system he ran. We're all guessing here but when you line the two players up, IMHO Petty has superior arm talent- much quicker release, much much much more accurate, as strong an arm, better touch. He is also much more athletic, is much more mobile and a better runner. And he's a big solid dude. Not quite as big as Hack but close. To my eyes he is much more talented. Hack is a potential prototypical NFL QB that they are hoping they can fix. _
Here it is. Bowles RE: Petty's preseason game vs the Lions. "Bryce had a little bit of a tough time identifying the Mike," Bowles said, referring to the middle linebacker. But the coach added, "Receivers have to get open, [the] offensive line has got to block more and they didn't click. [Petty] has got to get some experience and he'll be better next week, I'm sure, when he plays.
Some guys would rather see a guy and their team fail just so they can 'I told U so' ..so damn sad.. Having an opinion is one thing but Give the guy a fukin chance.. Remember, D'brick was not a pro bowler when he started.. Shit happens... It's the NFL. Yes, he's shown a few bad things, welp...that's college for u. If Shotty were here, he'd have ZERO shot at improving. But IMO, I think his tools and (from what everyone has reported) his 'football smarts' are a much bigger upside...
If they can bring Fitz in to hold the fort and these two guys, Hack and Petty, are in the same QB room together, competing with each other and learning from each other... Its just a great situation for the Jets. Even when Sanchez and Pennington were at their high points, I never felt good about the QB position. It always seemed precarious. Now the Jets have some depth and excellent young talent to develop. Cant wait!
Don't know if you guys have seen this, but this is pretty awesome. Guy was running the same offense as New England basically
Bryce Petty's arm is as strong as Hacks, he throws a better spiral, has a quicker more compact release, is 10x as accurate and has better touch. Other than that Hack has better arm talent lol. _
And Petty is more athletic, more mobile and a better runner. But Hack is bigger. So he has bigness going for him. _
