i wasnt one of the people who said that.... i was just pointing out that this isnt knee jerk after the fact. people here were pretty vocal they wanted no part of the guy long before the draft. i mean i hate the pick too, but i wasnt as vocal as others specifically about hack pre draft. i hated that we took him over all the other talented non-qbs on the board. i felt in round 1/2 we needed to land long term starters. not go after project players or fit over need
having gailey work with him certainly will be a benefit. although even in his one good season under bill obrien he was still under 60% completion. also, his 31 picks in 3 years is alarming. including 10 under obrien and 15 his sophmore year. he had a solid season as a freshman for sure. but its not like he didnt have his share of issues with accuracy and turnovers under obrien either
I advise anyone to read this article and not get excited - this is the type of information that gives some insight into Hackenberg - this film study shows a level of devotion and yearning to succeed that is rarely seen with any football player let alone someone who is not yet in the league - I'm excited about Hackenberg!
There are tons of red flags with Hackenberg, and most of the selling point I'm hearing is that he's a good QB and it's just everything and everyone else's fault for his struggles at Penn State, except for Hackenberg who was a victim of circumstances. So if we bring him in and let Gailey work him with then he'll be good. That's not a strong selling point for me, he was pedestrian at PSU and this is supposed to change in the pros? I'm not buying that either. But he's a Jet now so I hope he proves me wrong.
Ok I must admit I wouldn't have picked the Hack in Rd 2 (my choice was Cody Whitehair) however so many people have written this guy off and said it was a waste/huge risk. IMO, what the Rams/Eagles did in going all-in is unacceptably dangerous. Those teams are somewhat like us (around .500) and a rookie QB is not making them that much better quickly. So thankfully we didn't trade up to #1 or #2 and lose Mo as well as a number of other high-value picks. Yes, The Hack is a reach but give him a chance and get a good nights sleep safe in the knowledge that our defense is now significantly faster and legitimate top 6. Signing any journeyman QB, like we did last year, will also allow us to score enough points to win plenty of games...
I have a question for all you negative fans on the pick: What if the Jets traded their first-round pick, two second-round picks, third-round pick in 2016, and a first round pick and a third round pick in 2017 to the Titans for Jared Goff? Would that make you happy? Or how about: The Jets trade five draft picks to the Browns: first round, a third-round pick and a fourth-round pick in this year's draft, a first-round pick in 2017 and a second-round pick in 2018 for Carson Wentz? Would that make you happy? Or how about the Jets stay put in the 2nd Round and get Christian Hackenberg? The risk is much less than you think.
its the same thing, guys are hating the pick because they didn't want him when in reality he deserves a chance to improve and succeed. Honestly if he hits big for us I hope those wishing he wasn't our pick don't even support him. Reminds me of Jags fans shitting on Bortles because they wanted Teddy and now look.
He was anything but pedestrian in his freshman season. QBs don't play like that at 18 years old if they don't have a ton of smarts and talent.
I like the kid, his offensive line was absolute crap. I found an interesting video, I'm not sure if anyone posted it.
This exactly. It's not even like we had to trade up for him. We've wasted 2nd round picks on Ducasse, Hill, Smith (TBD) Amaro (TBD). If the FO, who knows a sh*t ton more football then everyone on this site COMBINED thinks he has a chance to be a franchise QB, then hell.....let's wait until we see this kid get some pro coaching and has a chance to play. This is a forum where opinions are supposed to be given,I get that. But to completely sh*t on the pick before he has chance to play....chill out. Opinions on FAs that have been in the league I have more of a stomach for. At least you know what they've been or haven't been in the league in addition to the contract. So when people go crazy over a free agent and they contract thats more valid. But to go apes*t over a draft pick that has yet to even sign his deal.........relax.
That's all well and good but you can't just discount the fact that he regressed and looked like absolute shit the last two years. His whole body of work in college suggests that he's nothing more than depth chart fodder. I highly doubt he'll ever be more than that but we'll see.
The real question is can the Jets put enough assets around him and keep them together to allow the burden of success to be on his shoulders? If Hackenberg isn't supported well, well we know how that will turn out based on how it turned out in college. Can the Jets do better? They have a major responsibility at this point to fix the infrastructure on the offensive side of the ball. This may be a great pick for no other reason than it forces a defensively oriented management team to focus very sharply on putting good pieces in play across the board on the other side of the ball. If the Jets keep taking defensive players in the 1st round this pick is likely to fail on that basis alone. If you think you might have a franchise QB you do everything you can to ensure his success. That might mean drafting 80% offensive players including the 1st and 2nd rounds for the next couple of seasons. You have to take off and nuke it from orbit. It's the only way to be sure.
See...I'm not in 100% agreement Br4d...I don't think you have to surround Christian with an ass load of talent. Some talent would be nice. At Penn State, the last 2 years, he had NO talent around him. He would have, I'm sure, been happy with an AVERAGE o-line. Just an observation.
Maybe he would be happy with an average o-line, but if the Jets are serious about this kid, then they need to sell out to protect him.
