    Kimberley A. Martin

Bowles said he's happy w/ Darron Lee's size. "He doesn't have to be a 240, 250 LB. That's not what we were looking for." #jets

Because of spread-type offenses in today's NFL, Todd Bowles said he likes athletic LBs like Lee who can play three downs.

so the Jets did pretty much what they wanted. they are clearly very happy with the pick, and they knew who was still on the board, as far as name recognition goes. If I find this pick dreadful I must think I know more football than two lifers. So I trust them and cannot wait to see this guy. You know, we all may disagree with decisions made in the heat of a game, but when two guys sit down for months and come to a mutual conclusion, where do people get off really thinking they know better? It is just silly.

Of course you know more than two NFL lifers; you're on a Jets message board.

Ha ha. I actually added a little something to it after you guys posted. But the tenor of it is the same. Sure we have opinions. But we do not have credentials. And he may turn out to stink. But if he does what they think he will, it is a good pick. He is exactly what they need to shore up the back 7 of their D.

Sub packages. I hate when the word "develop" is used with regards to a first round pick.

Yeah you're right they should've said he's going to come in and be an All-Pro player whom misses 3 snaps all year in their presser. It's silly to think he's not going to be on the field a ton.

Come in and be a starter would have suffice. The word "develop" conjures up memories of Stephen Hill and Vlad Ducasse. We agree on one thing though; he will be on the field a lot.

You're right - they should remember never to use that word when talking about a first round pick. The Jets haven't "developed" very many players over the years, although Snacks comes to mind. Previous regime. That said, I have faith in McCagnan/ Bowles and am ready to roll with whatever they decide. But gentlemen - save the word "develop" for rounds 4-7.

Jets run nickel close to 70% of the time. I can see him getting plenty of reps, maybe not right away but in a few weeks to integrate him into the defense.

He's going to be a very useful piece on defense to start....he might play the whole game against teams like New England who spread the field

They mention develop because the kid is crazy athletic and a little raw but still very young at only 21....So he's got a lot of potential in terms of just maturing physically and mentally

Yea, exactly, save it. Guys you draft in round 1-3 should be starters.

lol at all the FO homers that think GM's know more than anybody else. history shows us half these first rounders will be busts, after months of evaluations. NFL is terrible at player evals and the Jets are one of the worst drafting teams in history.

Now I'm not holding that against Mac, but what has he done to earn unbridled trust when it comes to drafting? His last draft was a mixed bag.

Lee is a project, drafted on potential more than on anything he's proven on the field. I'll give Bowles the benefit of the doubt and hope for the best but I'm prepared to be disappointed.

Todd Bowles strikes me as the old fashioned guy who makes all rookies "earn" their starting spot. He's off the Bruce Arians tree and Arians underused David Johnson for the first part of last year even when he was playing well. I think he called him "rookie" to the media instead of using his name. Then he earned his spot and he gave him the role and talked him up.

I had about 20+ posts saying the same thing about Idzik early on. Jets fans tend to give new GMs their complete trust rather have them earn it. I have no doubt that Bowles will find a way to utilize Lee in an effective way that still doesn't make this pick questionable.

He absolutely has proven things on the field. In 2 years he had 27 tfls, 11 sacks 3 ffs and 3 ints. He was the defensive mvp of the sugar bowl against Alabama.

    He is not a "project".

I am surprised how negative the reaction is for Jets fans for this pick. Lee was on the Bills radar as well right in that spot. He represents the new NFL where speed is way more important than just size.

I said he was drafted more on potential. Some games he plays with his hair on fire. Some games he disappears.

My point was that he has produced on the biggest stage in college football. I don't love the pick but I am OK with it. Fact is they needed to get younger and faster at LB and that what Lee provides. Every game thread contains at least a dozen posts about our slow LBs.

Macc has earned some extra trust from the way most of his moves last offseason worked out.

I've absolutely loved Mac's FA and trade moves.

His draft last year is very TBD tho. I hated the Smith pick, and didn't like the 3rd round trade back (tho Mauldin is panning out nicely).
point being, he hasn't quite earned the draft trust just yet..
    tonite is very important..
