I think we're going to hopefully see a lot more 4-3 principles with the abundance of defensive lineman we have, coupled with Lee's selection. If we line up Williams-Richardson-McLendon-Wilkerson with Carter/Henderson-Harris-Lee we have a pretty formidable 4-3 unit right there. Sub in Mauldin on the edge, taking McLendon out on passing situations, and let Rich/Wilk push the pocket together from the inside (lining them both up in a 3T on 3rd down). Whether people want to believe it or not, versatility helps the pass rush a ton. I think this selection vs. taking an end/OLB shows what the coaching staff thinks about Mauldin. They project IV to be that player it seems. The emergence of Deone Buccannon, and selections of speed demon linebackers Ryan Shazier and Shaq Thompson, and now Lee, show what the NFL linebacker will soon routinely become.
I'm ZERO impressed. This guy has Gholston written all over him. We needed an immediate impact player in the 1st round of this draft and what we got is a guy that will not even push who we have for starting time. We did NOT need a 2 year project for the fuckin' defense! If you want 2 year projects then you draft Lynch....at least the risk reward would have been worth it. 7th straight jack ass year we drafted defense. You know...they say defense wins championships but you NEED offense to get you to the playoffs. One more thing...I don't think Fitzpatrick is coming back. I bet he retires.... Yes, the one thing that is distinctly same old Jets is the way we draft. It's in our DNA and no matter what new blood comes in we still shit the bed.
Whiskey Tango Foxtrot 1st Round checklist Defense : Check Ohio St: Check High Bust potential: Check Have to Google: Check Typical Jet draft. However......... Can he punt?
Listen man, I'm a fan of Mac thus far, it not absurd to think scouts and GM's get persuaded by these combine numbers, it happens every year. I just don't see how this was the BPA on their board at 20, I thought some team would reach on a major way for Lee, I absolutely didn't think it would be us. The plus side, he does have potential, he is a hard worker, he is athletic as hell, and we got a very young player and he hasn't come close to tapping into his potential yet. I felt D.Lee should have waited a couple more years before coming out of college, right now, I think Perry is the better player coming out, just with a much lower ceiling as far as potential goes. I ultimately don't feel it was the best pick we could've made but like I said, I hope I'm wrong.
Lee is young, he's 21. He's still a kid. Yet he's mature, aware, and appears sharp. He looks good. He interviews well. And he's got inner swagger, confidence. His makeup is a BIG part of the pick. He's yet to grow into a man. He gonna get bigger and better. No way Macs gonna gamble there on Mack. He's not in a position to gamble on that pick.
Players on loaded college teams are always a tricky evaluation. How much of what you see is a product of their talent vs. the collection of talent surrounding them? Alabama players for example tend to be solid for the most part but not stars. Maybe is the goal.
I'm not a fan of this pick. Lee has great straight line speed and is a good A/B gap blitzer. What I don't like is that he missed 12 tackles last year, he struggles to disengage from blockers, and I think he is overrated right now in coverage (PFF ranked him as the 74th best coverage LB last year). I believe his coverage ranking is so low because of his zone coverage skills. He appears to be more comfortable in man coverage than he is playing zone. Hopefully I'm wrong about Lee and he turns into a great player.
How the fuck do you know they'll be long term starters and Lee just a specialist? Do you have a magic ball that no one else knows about? You don't know shit. You don't know that right now, look how Vernon Gholston turned out and look how JJ Watt turned out. You seriously need to think before you speak, you wanna bash the pick just because and that's stupid.
Watched some older tape of Lee. I like his stuff from 2014 better than his 2015 tape. That said, I do NOT want him taking on any linemen. He gets destroyed even by WRs sometimes. Needs some functional strength at the point of the attack.
Fair points. I'm sure that Lee's combine numbers helped elevate his draft status, but I trust that the front office did their due diligence on Lee's game tape as well. Here's Mac's first quote on Darron in today's Daily News: “He’s a very fluid, smooth athlete,” Maccagnan said. “You knew on the tape that he was a very athletic and fast linebacker.” My thinking is that I trust our GM and Coach to evaluate and find the talent that best fits our team. Last season, we were consistently burned by running plays outside the tackles, as well as wheel routes, mostly due to our linebackers being too slow. Lee would appear to help fill, along with Carter, this glaring hole in our defense.
All things considered LB was one of our most glaring needs and we filled it with a player who was almost universally projected to be drafted before 20. I'm going to be cautiously optimistic and say that I think this kid has a great chance of succeeding in what looks like its going to be an absolutely stacked defense now that its much less likely that Mo is getting traded.
