I like Cook over all these QB except Goff. Cook has good size and can make all the throws. These QB who nobody has seen all season like Wentz and Lynch scare me. Reminds me of Gholston and that is enough for me to pass. Now they might be studs but how often has the Jets gotten lucky like that. Cook has plenty of tape to look at and analyze. Lot less risk.
Only things I dont like about Goff is his build and he wasnt as accurate as he should've been in a spread offense. Honestly I really dont know how people look at him at Wentz over guys like Cook and Lynch and say they are without a doubt the consensus 1-2 picks in the draft. Bottom line, I rank all of these QB's very close. I just prefer Cook cause like you mentioned he has size and the ability to make throws , even though he has shown inaccuracy too. But could probably be had where his actual value lies (mid 2nd - early 3rd). I just hope Lynch is gone by the time our pick comes around. He's probably the only guy I would be mad about us taking.
No offense, but you like Cook for size and ability to make throws, yet you'd be mad about Lynch? Do you realize Lynch has better size and ability to make throws?
Id be mad bout Lynch because it would be a 1st round pick. Cook in all likelihood wont. And let it be known I dont want him in the 1st either. Or any QB for that matter. And to be honest Id rather have the guy that has made those throws against Ohio State and Michigan rather than the guy that made em against Houston , Tulane and whatever other second rates schools are in the AAC. I know there are plenty of QB's in the league outside of bigtime programs. But when guys are that close , which I think all of these guys are , I'd prefer the one that has faced the better competition in school.
That's fair. One of the traits I love about Lynch is his percentage under pressure. The guy is physically at the level of freak. He shows like a playmaker. Definitely needs work learning the pro game, but I think we're bring Fitzpatrick back regardless, so I think if we drafted him he'd have time. Cook looks like he has a lot of good traits as well. I'd be satisfied with him Rd 2.
I dont mind Lynch , just not in the 1st round. Teams are so QB starved though that these guys get overdrafted. The fact that he could go top 10 tomorrow is pretty scary to me. In fact I think there's a real good chance 4 QB's come off the board in the 1st round. The thing I like best about Cook as a prospect is that he ran a pro style offense. There will obviously be a learning curve with any rookie QB learning a new system but I always think the guys that spent the last 3 or 4 years running a similar offense have a better chance at picking it up quicker at the next level. If we happened to draft him Friday I would think he is suited to be our QB of the future more than Petty is.
Petty is a better pure QB than Cook and the system each of them ran as 20 to 22 years olds against college defenses is going to be irrelevant very soon after joining the NFL. Petty has now been in a pro system for a full year plus, he has a much better arm, quicker release, is MUCH MUCH more accurate, is MUCH more athletic and actually has leadership qualities. And he's not a douchebag like Cook. _
I do like Petty's arm but nobody is going to know for sure what he can do until he sees some playing time. I also dont trust the team to stick with him through some lumps if he hits them early , unless he is literally their only option at the time.
I wanted to love Cook. I watched him a lot his junior year and I just didn't get it. I also watched a lot of Petty and was much much more impressed. And when they faced off against each other in their bowl game, Petty was far the superior player against a much better defense. So I watched Cook a LOT last year and I still don't get it. He's woefully inaccurate -- I figured his senior year was THE year he put it together and completed 65% of his passes, or at LEAST 60% (he'd never completed even 59%). But he was even WORSE at 56%, as a SENIOR with a massive Oline. He can make some throws but he misses some really automatic ones and he's just not athletic. Like he stumbles over his feet sometimes. And he's a jerkoff. _
But what competition has Lynch face? No one has heard of him till this year but Cook has 4 years of film to look back on and see how he has progressed. Very rare that any college player stays 4 years nowadays. Cook has played and won in some big games with talent and grit. He would be a good fit in New York. I think he might go before Lynch but in less than 24 hours all will be answered.
I understand your skepticism, but I have to think that Bowles, Gailey, and Mac are smarter than the doofuses they replaced. Anyone who has been around the NFL for any length of time and has any clue whatsoever knows that one has to be patient with young QBs, has to surround them with talent, a good OL, and not overwhelm them with too much too early, and then makes play calls to help them get in a rhythm and build confidence.
You can only play the competition in front of you. Ultimately NFL teams are more concerned with what a prospect can potentially do vs what they did, and rank them accordingly.
That is extremely risky especially with a first round pick. The Jets are not in risk mode right now. They barely missed the playoffs and the fans will be looking for more this year. We have many needs and taking a QB like Lynch who probably isn't ready to start right away will set us back.
Good points. I agree regarding the risk mode for the most part. You're probably right about the fans, but they also need to understand that the Jets face a much tougher schedule this season, and unless they can fix the right side of the OL and/or add a speedy pass rusher, the chances of the Jets doing more this season are slim and none. Mac has said on numerous occasions that while he wants to keep the team competitive, he doesn't want that to hurt the team long term, that the long term benefit of the team is much more important than the short term. First and foremost, the Jets need a true franchise QB. IMO if the Jets really like Lynch and think he truly has the potential to develop into a franchise QB, then they have to accept the risk and take him. They aren't ready to be serious contenders for the Lombardi Trophy this year. They're probably another year or two away. That would give Lynch time to learn, adapt and grow/improve on his weak areas.
Personally I think the Jets are worse than last year, and with a more difficult schedule. If I'm the Jets, I'm preparing for the end of the Brady era. Figuring out the most important position on the roster is a great way to start doing that.
He's also better in terms of throwing the football down the field with accuracy. Cook would beat Petty in a competition this year in my opinion. There's a reason the Jets are looking at QBs this draft, because they aren't sure on Petty one bit. Spread QB with questionable downfield accuracy, he's a big body with a live arm but he has much to learn and I don't think the Jets want to wait on that light to turn on if it ever does. Every year, I get nervous about a certain prospect and that is Lynch, I don't want the Jets to get him but I am afraid we will draft him if he's OTC. No reason to get this guy, he's not that good at all.
They just replayed Michigan St vs Iowa. Cook is sooooo unimpressive on tape. Conversely, Iowa's cornerback Desmond King is an absolutely stud. I can't believe he went back to school.
haha..now it's Hackenberg in the 2nd they are talking about (or so says cimini)...why not just take the year off.
You do know he was injured ever since the Maryland game? That was about 4 weeks prior to the Iowa game. Injury on his throwing shoulder. He wasn't nearly the same player. Not trying to make excuses but take that into consideration.
