When you know you're not going to win going in it makes sense to get the full experience beforehand, including picking a VP nobody else is interested in - which is the only kind who will hitch their wagon to yours at this point. Cruz's campaign has been pure desperation since Trump did so well in the south early on. He has no natural constituency outside of Jesusland and to have a barely concealed atheist wiping the floor with him in places like Georgia and Tennessee must have been mortifying for him. Unlike Reagan there's going to be no second act for Cruz, at least not in the GOP. He is despised by too many people in the party to be able to pick himself up out of the ashes and make a comeback.
