I'd take Geno/Petty over that walking Injury Report that is Bradford, any day of the week. Thr fact that we are being linked with him makes me want to vomit. He's garbage.
I would start Hoyer or Petty any time over Smith. I'm still thinking we should pick Sudfield in the 5th if he is there. If not him, then Doughty in the 7th if he's there.
I understand that he was mixing in against both the 1's and 2's. When both players are pretty much the same in term of their level of play, you start to look at not only intangibles but the grasp of the system and which quarterback is more comfortable with the personnel. The fact that no one stepped in to try to protect Geno when IK jocked on him says a lot about what the team thought about him. Well it's a worse case scenario, but at this point in time, when free agency is pretty much over, we have no cap space to make any moves anyway (even if Geno was cut), and the only other quarterback on the roster is a 4th round player whom has barely even been activated for games (maybe one when Fitzpatrick fucked his thumb up), it'd be pretty pointless to release him. I don't any team wants Geno to be a long term starter, but if Charlie Whitehurst can hang around this league as a backup for nearly 10 years (and he must be a hell of a guy because he's garbage), then Geno can make it for 5 years as a backup.
Why is it that Geno can go from a project spread/gimmick offense in college to a horrible offensive coach to play under (Rex) for young QB's with a laughable WR corps.....then play for a year and a half (while showing some flashes but making some awful mistakes) and his career is over? He can't improve and will always play like a rookie when other young QBs can make mistakes and improve.....Makes no sense Thankfully our GM/Coach aren't as shortsighted as some fans and will atleast see what he's got in a year where he should have a lot to prove. Atleast let the guy succeed or fail in a time where young QBs either get it or don't, it costs us nothing after investing 2 years in the guy....we don't have the luxury to just throw away 2nd round picks, especially at the QB position
This team throws away 1st and 2nd round picks all the time. Smith is takin up a roster spot for someone who we could pick or sign that could actually contribute. If Smith was the QB of the future we would not have drafted Petty in the fourth round. Now we need to move Smith out of the way so Petty can get his share of reps.
Nor does it mention that Geno was learning Gailey's offense, whereas Fitz already knew the offense and it was the offense in which he had the best years of his career. Good post. I'm not saying that I want Geno to start or that I think he can become a quality starter. I just think we should be fair and honest in the discussion, and posters should not use a couple of articles written by a sportswriter who omits significant facts to support their opinion.
Some posters allow prejudice or impatience to overrule common sense and their basic knowledge of draft picks in the NFL and how long it can take players to develop. I'm glad to see that you haven't, and are bringing some calm logic and common sense to the thread.
A QB as bad as Geno over 2 years almost never becomes a quality starter. I can't recall even one who did with character issues like Geno has. So by all means keep him on the roster and if he gets a chance then good for him. But you don't throw away a season for his benefit.
Disagree that he was that bad overall in the scope of things...he had some really terrible moments but I think there were games where you thought to yourself that this guy could be good one day (Falcons, Patriots, Dolphins x2, maybe a few others). He got into an argument with one of his dumb buddies on the team that was willing to risk his roster spot over a few hundred dollars....immature? Yes definitely but don't think he's a bad guy Like I said before, he had terrible WRs with a failed offensive head coach and never should have been playing that early. So it really can't hurt to let him compete now...I would never throw away a season for him but if he wins the battle in training camp then go with him
I want what you're smoking if you'd take Goff or Wentz who have yet to throw a single pass in this game or have a team right now over Geno Smith as far as 2016 projections go.
If you want to be fair about the situation Geno blew off his teammate, and refused to pay him back $600 knowing he would be having to face him everyday in the locker room. It also tells us a lot that the locker room allowed Geno to be knocked out before diffusing the situation. The only modern day quarterback I can really remember turning such a garbage start to a career into anything is Alex Smith. And he changed his career around with a top 5 defense, excellent head coach/former quarterback and elite running game. What Geno is bad at is something that quarterbacks either have or they don't have, and if they don't have it, it's incredibly hard to foresee them getting better at it. Lack of pocket presence/ability to feel the rush, and shitty ball placement to receivers rarely improves. He can improve on the poor reads, the bad footwork and the turnovers, but his true weakness is what will prevent him from every being a good quarterback in this league IMO.
Geno Smith has poor pocket presence yes and he may or may not have a functioning brain but I disagree big time on his ball placement. That's actually one of his few strengths. His accuracy and in particular the ball placement is very good. He's always thrown a nice ball. Its the whole decision making and not being able to read defenses to do possibly not having a functional brain that shits on all his other strengths. But he can make all the throws on the field and all the throws nicely. We just don't see it enough because he's too busy latching onto one guy or losing his mind over the rush or getting himself knocked the fuck out in his own locker room
It's tough because he can hit anybody in the hands over the middle, yet when you start to see him work outside the numbers and the flats he sails high, he sails low, and has absolutely no touch on a deep ball whatsoever. I'd agree though if we're talking about hitting guys in stride over the middle.
Even throwing outside the numbers, from the pocket he throws a nice ball. I'll clarify though because his accuracy and ball placement does struggle when he is on the move/rolling out. And most of the time under Morningwood (most of his NFL playing time) the offense had him roll out for outside the numbers or deep passes. When he sets his feet his accuracy is great, but when he doesn't he has a tendency to sail the ball and miss his target. Which is all the more reason to realize he was a terrible draft pick!! With Rex & Morningwood they had a very complicated offense based on the QB operating under center, rolling out a lot, taking multiple step drops and making reads. All of that Geno Smith sucks at! Which is why there is/was some encouragement with Chan Gailey for Geno Smith. He would be in the shotgun a lot, Gailey hardly ever rolls the QB out. And its based on quick reads and go. Geno could operate out of the gun, and either hit his first read or tuck it and run. That's more to his skill set. There's a reason why under Morningwood he only looked "good" in two minute drills because they threw out all that other stuff and let him do this.
Oh so that's how you make a decision about the future. Goff and Wentz must really suck, they aren't even on an NFL team! And they have no NFL stats! What does that tell you? _
Yeah, gimme a hit of that reality. That's some good shit Some of the logic that people come up with defending geno, and not pursuing a fukn goddam QB in general, are mind boggling. Wentz is a genius compared to g-no
Those who think Petty would be better than Geno are in for a rude awakening. Petty crumbles under pressure a lot faster then Geno does. Take a look at his play against WVU in '14 for proof of that. WVU's defense wasn't even that good.
Hahahahaaaa ok we get it, you think your son doesn't suck. That was his worst game of his college by far and he was playing with 2 cracked vertebrae. You don't know dick about Petty. Go watch his bowl game against a VERY good defense in Mich State. Geno is a fucking dope. Just stop. _
