I think Robert Aguayo out of FSU would be a great pick. Not only is he a great fg kicker he's also a great directional kicker who is a master of the pop fly kick off.
Unfortunately the Jets have precedent for doing exactly that (see Ted's little brother Mike drafted in 2nd round).
i would absolutely consider a Punter with a day 3 pick. glad the Jets are looking at Hackett. our new ST coordinator was just at his pro day, and he happens to be a Utah native.... i hope it happens! http://www.ganggreennation.com/2016...aft-rumors-team-shows-interest-in-tom-hackett
the Kicker the OP is referencing is certainly interesting, and will likely go in the 4-7 round range as well. http://latino.foxnews.com/latino/sp...uayo-hopes-to-be-second-round-nfl-draft-pick/ "With more of a premium on accuracy in the NFL after extra points were moved to the 23-yard line, Aguayo enters the draft as the most accurate kicker in NCAA history (96.73 percent). He made all 198 extra-point attempts, was 69 of 78 on field goals and never missed a kick inside of 40 yards. Last season only five NFL teams made all of their PATs and six missed at least four." He hasn't been very good on touchbacks. interesting though, with the new kickoff rule change, whether teams might like a guy who can consistently kick it high and to the 2yd line, while letting coverage unit stop them prior to the 25. All the same, i'd rather draft Hackett if i had the choice of one day 3 specialist. Punter is the bigger need, and i like those Aussie punters.
I actually thought that was a good idea at the time. It was right after the infamous Doug Brien fiasco. Vinateri was pretty much making every clutch kick he attempted. Nugent was supposed to be the next Vinateri and the Jets had a pretty solid team, so why not add an automatic three point weapon? I can't believe this guy fell on his ass on his first attempt. And if that wasn't enough, his kicking career went downhill from there. I guess he can only kick in Ohio. Only the Jets can have that kind of luck.
Then you'd be doomed to always having second-rate kickers and punters and your STs would blow chunks.
even if that were true....i don't care. but oddly enough it's not true because most of the kickers and punters in the league weren't drafted. so I'd be like everyone else. and of those that were drafted? i'd say they are just as much successful as those that weren't. here's a list of punters and kickers drafted. go back to 2010- 5 years. half those guys have been cut already, some out of the league, and I don't see any I would consider all that good. what would I get by drafting them vs. just grabbing an undrafted guy? nothing really. http://www.nfl.com/draft/history/fulldraft?position=SPECIALISTS&type=position
Wow! Knock me over with a feather! I'm surprised (not that you were right), but 10 of the 17 top kickers were UFAs. I stand corrected and apologize. Conversely, however, 18 of the top 26 punters were drafted. Still, I think making a comment of NEVER drafting a punter or kicker is silly if for no other reason than if you draft him, he's yours, but as a UFA you are competing against other teams. The odds are much better of getting the kicker you want and a top kicker if you draft him, than they are signing him as a UFA. What this tells me is that like other positions, some teams are better at drafting and finding good players than others. Also, for some reason, it's either easier to judge punters than it is kickers, or teams place more of a premium on getting a good young punter than they do a good young kicker. I think many teams prefer to go with a veteran PK as he's more a known quantity and perhaps better able to handle the pressure and stress. its all good. wow thanks for looking them up. I am honestly surprised there are that many drafted myself. When I say I would never draft one I mean that that should be the philosophy anyway, obviously if circumstances were right- I would stray from philosophy. I think if you have a stacked roster then I'd be more inclined to draft one simply because the player would have a better chance of making the team instead of wasting a late round pick when you already have a lot of depth. Not often teams are in that category though. -- the reason I say 'never' is because there are always plenty available as UDFAs, its cheaper that way, I don't view the positions as that important in relation to others. I would rather draft a special teams gunner than a kicker/punter anyday. And lastly I like the idea of a guy kicking his way onto the team because I know he will be more prepared for high pressure kicks in game situations when his livelihood has depended on it already, as opposed to a guy drafted and handed the job.
