So, if somebody hears that you'll get all the nookie you want if you cut off your left nut with a butter knife and does it, would you then do it too? Just because someone else may be stupid enough to give him that money, doesn't mean we should be that stupid. Make no mistake about it, giving Mo $40-$50, maybe even $60 million guaranteed out of a $90 (+) million contract would be totally stupid. He's a very good player, but he isn't that good, and isn't worth that kind of money. You're looking at it as a fan. GMs have to look at it in a certain way. Just because we don't have a franchise QB right now doesn't mean that we can just play players at other positions whatever they want. That's part of the problem with the Jets and Mo now. That moron Tanny gave in to Revis too many times and other players on the team were watching. Mac has to bring salaries back in line. The better GMs have team salary structures in mind. QBs, topnotch offensive and defensive play-makers get the biggest salaries, the STs specialists get the lowest, and the OL and DL salaries are usually towards the bottom of the rankings (with the exception of LTs and DEs who are great pass rushers). They only pay OL and DL a certain amount, depending upon position, and won't go over it. Of course, LTs and stud pass rushing DEs will get more than the other OL and DL positions, but Mo is not a stud. He had a great season last season, but it was the first such season he's had. He's had some good and very good seasons, but not great. His numbers could easily go backwards this year. He was in a contract year last year, and that almost always motives players to work and play harder.

Franchise him again and pay him almost $19 million? That's insane! Then if we can't trade him and he signs the tender, we're stuck with an even bigger salary for him, he's another year older, he could suffer a worse, career-threatening injury or one that is more serious and would take longer to rehab, and we would have to wait another year to get a compensatory pick. That makes zero sense. You're really not thinking clearly if you think that is a viable option.

Why is it frustrating? We won't re-sign him because his demands are out of line with what Mac is willing to pay a 3-4 DE, and Mo refuses to come down in what he wants. The problem is he wants too much money. Some other GM might be willing to way overpay him either because his team has a big need on the DL and because his team doesn't have two other topflight DEs that are every bit as talented as Mo. That's the advantage of drafting BPA. If you wind up with great depth at a position, you don't get held hostage by a player wanting too much money (or more than you're willing to pay). You can tell him what you're willing to pay, and if he's not willing to accept it, you can trade him, let him walk in FA, or sometimes he can sit, lose a year of service and not get paid.

I'm a Jets fan, not a Mo fan. I wanted the Jets to draft him, and they did. I thought he'd prove to be a very good player and he has, but no player of his level is irreplaceable. He's not a JJ Watt, Reggie White, Von Miller or Aaron Rodgers. Those players are irreplaceable and worth every penny you pay them, Mo isn't. As far as I'm concerned, he can either take what Mac is willing to pay him or he can go screw himself. Mac is trying to build a SB winner. I believe in Mac. Any player that gets in the way of Mac's plan, won't go along with the program, or is difficult, can go take a flying leap.

Good OLBs rarely hit FA, and when they do, they're VERY expensive. The Jets had cap space issues this year. Even if there had been someone really good, they couldn't have afforded him. I don't of any cheaper FA OLBs, either young or older that were worth spending money on in FA. I'm sure Mac would have loved to have added one in FA so he didn't have to go into the draft needing one so badly. But why waste money on someone that isn't that good, especially, when money is tight anyway?

As much as we all love Mo as a player the fact of the matter is he is a luxury for us.
The players we have on the D-line make him expendable and his value as trade bait would serve us better if we could use him to solidify other positions of need.

the idea is to lock a guy up early for longer at a lower price. the jets tried to lock up mo and have been trying to lock him up. its been talked about that he is not interested in what the jets are offering. these are concessions you make, lock you up early, you get a nice pay day and can have the safety of a longer deal with a bit of up front money. mo it seems has decided to wait it out and look for the big contract, its already kind of backfired on him once with the broken leg at the end of last year and it could backfire on him again as at this point he really doesnt have a safety net. which is the big thing that players hate about the franchise tag.

I think he's a great player....He's a run stuffer who also rushes the passer and is a 2x All-Pro. You're focusing too much on stats even though he had double digit sacks twice in the last 3 seasons as a 3-4 DE which is great. He's not JJ Watt but he's the next best and could be a Hall of Famer if he plays at this level for a decade. If you could ask any coaches or scouts around the league I'm pretty sure most of them would say great player, not "good player".

As for franchising him a second time....he would be traded for a mid round pick if we couldn't work anything out but it would be a last resort anyway. I would never franchise him twice with the intention of paying him the second time...it would just be to buy time with a new contract or trade.

I like Mac as well but sometimes GM's can be too rigid or make the wrong decisions.....no one is perfect. All I'm saying is I wouldn't mind paying Wilkerson market value for a 2x All-Pro 3-4 DE entering his prime. If he gets another team to pay market value then why can't the Jets be that team? Obviously if some random team gives him Suh money or something I will agree with you

Mo IS our D-line anchor....he's not a luxury for anyone, including us. We would be OK without him, but we can be GREAT with him

Without a franchise QB we need something to dominate other teams with, and our D-line can be devastating. We become ordinary on the d-line, then we are just another above average defense with an OK offense and still no QB

I'm sorry but imo talk of his being a HOFer is simply laughable at this point. He'll have to stop taking plays off, and raise his play and sustain it for 5-6 more years. I don't think he'll play 10 more years. That would make him 36.

If Mac can't trade him this time, what makes you think he'd be able to a second time? If you franchise him again, and are unable to trade or re-sign him long term, then you have to renounce the franchise tag and you lose Mo for nothing I believe.

Well HOF if he plays like he did last season for another 5-6 years isn't crazy....It's the same as you calling him just a good player on the flip side. After JJ Watt who is the best 3-4 DE in the league? Players aren't voted All Pro twice on their first contract if they are merely good

I don't know how a Jets fan could say Wilk isn't great because he is.....3-4 DEs aren't even supposed to put up big numbers or make flashy plays but he does anyway while doing the dirty work required of his position

If you just don't want to give a great D-lineman big money well I can respect that point of view but I don't understand anyone saying he's not that great of a player anyway

As for the franchise tag....Who knows what kind of offers they have right now? They could trade him if they wanted to for sure this year or next year it's just a matter of what Mac views as fair value....So we wouldn't get nothing out of it next season anyway

With Sheldon & Williams on the D-line Mo is indeed a luxury because we've seen that even with those guys we can't produce a consistent pass rush.
Our weakest link on our D is undoubtedly our LB corps. This is a position that needs to be upgraded in a big way.
I like what I saw from Mauldin last season and Harris is a mainstay but we need a difference maker at the other spot that can get to the QB.
That would also free up Mauldin.

I get what you're saying about Mo being an anchor of the D-line but Sheldon and Williams are going to be beasts on their own and with the other needs at QB,LB and replacing Revis sooner rather then later we are going to be better off getting something for Mo, especially that all signs point to him walking after next season.

I think he will get a bit more guaranteed money than the Malik Jackson deal but close to that.

It's ridiculous to pay that money for a position player...

I agree but that ship has sailed. Signing Mo to 60 mil guaranteed is stupid. Mac is suppose to be a draft guru guy.... If you trust in Mac trust that he uses the picks we get for Mo wisely.

Someone who can provide depth or be a role player at a low rate... And because they literally hardly have anyone at OLB. Heck, I'd bring back Pace for the vet minimum to compete

Listen, I hear you. I wish they had signed someone at OLB and had thought they would. Granted, I'm not that well versed on players on other teams, but I didn't see a single OLB in that depth/role player category that I thought was worth spending the money on. The only two that I know anything about that I would have considered were Courtney Upshaw and Sam Acho, but I really don't think they would have been worth the money.

Here's a list of the FA OLBs this year:

    Bruce Irvin
    Aldon Smith
    Tahir Whitehead
    Nigel Bradham
    Emmanuel Lamur
    Frank Zombo
    Kyle Wilber
    Michael Morgan
    Philip Wheeler
    Chris Carter
    Quentin Coples
    Nick Perry
    Chad Greenway
    Junior Galette
    Courtney Upshaw
    Ramon Humber
    Lorenzo Alexander
    Spencer Paysinger
    Sam Acho
    James-Michael Johnson
    Andy Mulumba?
    Michael Neal
    Calvin Pace
    Bjoern Werner
    O'Brien Schofield
    Anthony Spencer
    LaMarr Woodley
    Larry English
    Jonathan Newsome
    Dwight Freeney
    James Anderson
    Darius Fleming
    Andy Studebaker

Supposedly, the Jets had some interest in Bruce Irvin, but he quickly was out of their price range, if not always out of their price range. Aldon Smith was also a FA. He was also out of their price range, and I doubt the Jets had much interest in him because of his character and illegal substance issues.

Tahir Whitehead? Nigel Bradham? Emmanuel Lamur? Frank Zombo? Kyle Wilber? Michael Morgan? Philip Wheeler? Chris Carter? Ramon Humber? Lorenzo Alexander? Spencer Paysinger? James-Michael Johnson? Andy Mulumba? Michael Neal? Jonathan Newsome? James Anderson? Darius Fleming? Andy Studebaker? How about George Edsel? LOL Dekoda Watson? I never heard of those guys, and from the looks of the teams that some of them played for, a number of them are 4-3 OLBs anyway. Would the ones who are 3-4 OLBs have been anything other than camp fodder? I don't know. Perhaps you know of some that might have been worthy.

Quentin Coples? LOL No thanks. Nick Perry would have been a decent to good add, but GB kept him. Chad Greenway? He's 33 and I believe a 4-3 OLB. Junior Galette? 4-3 OLB and head case, no thanks. Courtney Upshaw? He's a run stopper and provides little or no pass rush. Sam Acho was a player I liked a lot in college, but I think he's been a huge disappointment as a pro. Bjoern Werner was overrated in college imo and he hasn't done much as a pro, either.

O'Brien Schofield is a 4-3 OLB I believe, as is Anthony Spencer. LaMarr Woodley is evidently done since no one has signed him. Larry English is 30, hasn't done much in his career, and Pace is probably still better even at 40 years old (or whatever he is). Dwight Freeney is 36. Does he have any gas left in his tank, and is his price reasonable?

I have to guess that Mac thought spending money on any of these players would be wasting it, as they wouldn't help the team any. I think he thought adding Bruce Carter and the others would help the team more at their positions than any of these OLBs would have helped the Jets.

I think Calvin Pace is a safety net. I'm sure no other team has any interest in him. If Mac can't find another OLB in the draft, or as a cut following the draft or training camp, I'm sure that he'll probably bring back Pace. I do believe there are some OLBs in the draft that Mac has his eyes on. I hope he can get the one(s) he wants!!!

I could see the Titans wanting Mo and could afford him too!

    Maybe something like this:

    Titans: Wilkerson + #20
    Jets: #15 + #47 + Conditional 3rd rounder (Mo resigns)

We jump up 5 spots that avoids a few teams that have the same needs as us. Add one of the 2nd rounders they got from the Rams. The conditional pick would be a must unless Mo's agent and the Titans can bang out a deal fast. In that case it would be a 3rd this year.

I think the Titans want a top ot and they're in a position to get one at 15.

They know that we'd take their #33 and #64 for Mo. That leaves them ammo to move up if they want and it leaves them a pick in the second round.

They want Decker for RT I'm guessing... He will be there at 20.

I would love to jump ahead of Buffalo, Atlanta and Indy... Those teams have a bunch of needs we have and could easily take a guy we like.

I'd love to jump too but there's no way decker is there at 20.

That being said. I have no doubt that Mac will make a move.

Wilkerson is the top 3-4 DL [that means DE AND DT] right now. Aim HIGH.

    2x 1st and 3x 2nd or bust.

Sounds like "or bust" is the realistic outcome in this scenario.

Well then prepare for a bust of a trade. That isn't happening.
