I don't disagree but if the guy shows something you have to take him seriously and a mid round pick is still decent investment, they shouldn't be treated like cannon fodder. Not specifically referring to the Jets. There's just an extreme bias around the league. If you're not a first round pick then you literally have to take your team to the super bowl back to back and lead the league in passer rating before the mainstream will change their pre-determined opinion of you.
The bias around QB's and later round picks is based on everybody looking for QB's all the time and the worst teams desperate for one in each draft. The odds on somebody slipping through past the first few picks of the 2nd round are basically completely random and on the order of 50-1 or something like that. So the guy has to be showing you something very good to get your attention after you've drafted him in the 4th round. Either that or everybody in front of them has to get hurt. Tom Brady never becomes Tom Brady if Bledsoe doesn't go down when he did. He might well have become a good QB at some point for the Pats next HC but Belichik was going to ride Bledsoe, who he had signed to a $100M contract, right into oblivion at the time Bledsoe went down. 5-13. That's how Belichik and the Pats started out. And no, going to the 6th round pick when your superstar QB was not the obvious problem would never have happened. Not in any universe.
Are you implying there's no offensive players worthy of a first round pick besides QBs? Jack Conklin if he's available is worth it. Corey Coleman? There's a number of receivers.
There is probably no position that is more consistently a sure thing than a stud O lineman. Sure their are exceptions that don't pan out, but percentage wise there are a hell of a lot more first round busts at QB, Pass Rushers etc, than O line. When an O line man is a projected first rounder he is usually the real deal. If Jake Conklin is available at 20 and we do not draft him, it will be a huge mistake as he will undoubtedly be the BPA.
none of the q.b.s in the draft are worth a first or second round pck.the jets have their sleeper pick in petty.who is n.f.l. ready to blossom after sitting and learning the essentials.
Hmmm, had not heard of him. Must play in a basketball conference. Clemson. Nice stats. Will keep an eye on him this year.
No, No, Any offensive player in the first round would be great. I just don't see us picking anything but defense in the first round. I would love to get an OL or WR. We just don't do that in the first round.
I agree that the QB class in this draft is weak, but the Jets need to take a QB in this draft anyway. Probably earlier than later, exactly because it's a weak class. I'm not saying draft a guy in the first round, but Petty is as much a project as any of these players. If they see a guy with intangibles in the second, they should take him over a project at any other position. Draft quarterbacks until you find one. And after you find one, keep drafting QBs.
Mid to late 2nd round QB's seem to be a losing proposition. The only guy in the NFL drafted in that vicinity to start next year will be Brock Osweiler and his drafting team was not motivated to retain him after his first contract. The other guys drafted after the early 2nd round and before the end who have started games recently are Geno Smith, Tarvaris Jackson (a couple of seasons after he was drafted), Chad Henne (a few seasons after he was drafted), Quincy Carter and Shaun King. None of these guys were particularly good QB's. They were mostly good enough to start for a team that had few other real options and then give way when a real QB showed up. You need to get a starter who is a plus out of the 2nd round. Drafting a QB the entire league has passed on and many teams have passed on twice is just rolling the dice and nobody comes up a big winner in that game of craps. The only recent QB to break the rule is Russell Wilson and he wasn't drafted because he didn't meet the height bar for an NFL QB. He then proved everybody wrong, including the Seahawks who let him go by twice before pulling the trigger in the 3rd round.
This is another good point. Let's watch him and see how he does over time. Matt Schaub was good for a few years before lack of top end talent eventually sank him. Last year was a weird year in the NFL. Lots of QB's you would not expect to have big years did and a few old favorites declined dramatically. Let's see if that holds up this year with the 2015 rules changes firmly in place and accounted for.
If a guy needs that much time I'd be pretty convinced they're not going to make it in this league. I'd say the success rate of a quarterback like that making it is slim as it is, but the sooner he plays the sooner you might really figure out what you have in him. Romo sat for 2 years, Brees sat for a year, Brady sat for a year, etc. Aaron Rodgers is really the exception to the rule in being the only franchise calibre starting quarterback to sit for 3 years. If Petty isn't in contention to compete for the starting job next year, I'd say he probably won't be anything more than a career backup.
A guy in Petty's position really needs to come into camp blazing and blow away the competition. That's because the Jets will find a solution at QB if they don't view him as the solution. Chad had forever to become the guy because the Jets had a 1st round pick invested in him. Even then he was seen as less of an investment than most 1st round picks because the Jets had 4 1st round picks in the year he was taken. I don't think the Jets even take Chad if all they had was their 18 pick. They'd probably have gone with a less risky pick.
