I agree with you there lol this talk of us getting a high 1st for Mo is unrealistic... I would love it but the money doesn't work with that compensation period. The deal with Mo almost needs to include a player with significant salary coming back to the Jets to get a decent pick out of the deal. Joe Thomas is around a 9 mil cap hit and is a perfect fit with Brick gone. Browns are starting over and would have a chance to draft a good one in Tunsil.
While it doesn't necessarily make sense due to the future money figures, Cox & Wilkerson paired with an awesome coordinator like Schwartz would be a hell of a duo.
Soon there isn't gonna be anyone under 30 on the roster we have the oldest roster in the league. The solution ?when the rosters top players are all over 30 you trade your best younger player that will solve everything.
I think we have two guys that were first round picks by the names of Sheldon Richardson (rookie of the year) and Leonard Williams. I love Mo and hated when we traded Revis but I actually understand why trading mo makes sense. He's an amazing player and teammate but giving him around 17 million a year would hurt us more I think.
Sheldon likely misss more time with his speeding from cops incident. Next time will be a season long suspension. 4-8 is what a lot of fans are expecting. Leonard Williams is no where near as good as wilk right now. Big cat had 3 sacks last season, wilk had 4x as many. The d is significantly weakened if wilk isn't on the field
I hate to say it but why would a team trade for Mo ,unless they believe they can win the Super Bowl this yr? San Fran,Philly No. The Rams No. Most of the teams that are a DE away from Super Bowl do not have the cap room for Mo. Why give up value for a guy who is going to command 15 million per, when you can pay him a little bit more next year and keep a top pick. I just do not see the market for him most Jets fans see and believe we would be lucky to get a 3rd for him
If you wait for Mo to hit the market, he may not hit the market (we sign him long term or tag him again). And even if Mo hits the market, you will have to compete with other teams for his services. Whereas if you trade for him now, you get him now no questions asked.
A team would trade for Mo based on having a big hole on the DL, reflected in poor defense over the last couple of seasons, and having an offense that looked like it was ready to compete if they defense was there alongside it. Oakland, Tennessee and Jacksonville all kind of fit the profile and have some cap space available to make it work. Chicago seems less likely, although Cutler played well enough last year that they may think they're competitive if they upgrade the DL. As to why a team would give up a draft pick and cap space when they could just wait a year: the draft pick is 50/50 to bust and they might not have the best chance to sign Mo when he hit free agency next year (or in 2018 if the Jets re-franchise him.) Ideally they make the pick and he works out but anybody has to admit that Mo is more likely to be a dominant defensive lineman than anybody picked in this draft. He's not better than the field but he's better than any individual in the field until that person proves they can play at a high level in the NFL.
Unfortunately this is the worst year to try to trade Muhammad Wilkerson - very deep defense line draft. Why is a team going to give up a high pick, and pay him Suh type of money. Teams are going to get quality defense lineman all the way till the third round, and going to get them at way cheaper deal than it would cost to trade for Wilkerson. If you would be happy with a second round pick for Wilkerson that's fine ,but if you're expecting more , than you better be prepared to see him playing under the franchise tag all year. ( will probably miss all of Ota's and training camp before he signs his franchise tag about week before the season starts. When player misses that much training camp they become more prone to injuries. It will suck to pay a player 15.7 million to sit on the sidelines.( recovers from injuries). Two options the Jets have 1. Sign him to long term deal, or trade him for best offer. Neither one of those happens , and Wilkerson going to become a distraction all training camp.( when is he going to sign his tender and report).
The best trading partner in the case of Wilkerson is someone who wants a star on the DL and still keep their 1st round pick to address something else. Who knows how teams have setup their draft boards, and whom they covet. Either a 2nd round pick, or a 1st round swap involving Wilkerson both seem reasonable options for potential trading partners.
and the TEAM is significantly weakened if we give wilkerson 15+ million annually with 40 million in gaurantees.
The way I look at it if we are fortunate enough to get a first or second round pick for Mo it will actually allow us to get younger at a position of massive need, while still retaining adequate strength on the Defensive line. Not to mention freeing up a ton of money we really can not possibly afford. With the first three picks assuming a trade, say round 1-2-2 and may be even on the third, we could walk away with OL, OLB, more OL and or WR or DB. Clady is younger than Brick, Williams replaces Mo, someone younger will for sure replace Cro, so yes we are moving in the right direction. Had we not find ourselves in such a shit hole of needs from our previous two regimes, I truly believe Mac would not be trading away picks to make us respectable but rather capture picks and build a more solid foundation through the draft. That time will soon come if he sticks to his guns. Mac can build his legacy if he can lands us the QB we so desperately need for A bright future. Everything else will be gravy, and Mo a distant memory, like many before him.
