They would cut him if he refused to take a pay cut and they didn't feel like he was worth $14.1 million and they really needed the cap space. There are $9.1 million reasons why they would cut him.
just watch byz. Draft day rolls around and Clemson defensive back Mackenzie Alexander falls a little and is sitting there when the Jets pick at 20..... I wouldnt be surprised 1 iota if the pattern you laid out continues
My guess is that Big Macc will either make a trade or move up in the draft. Now that we can sign Fitz he's free to nip this in the bud.
there was an article today that said he only technically missed 1 snap and it was on a trick play where the whole offensive line was not on the field. I dont remember and Idk what jackass coach thought that type of play would be a good idea, but it is nitpicking to consider that a "missed" snap for Ferguson. Therefore IMO i wont count it. 0 missed snaps
Im really not so sure. I think because of Brick's track record and importance at his position they would've much easily cut Breno to open up some cap space. If they were so dead set on cutting him and opening up that money why wasnt this done a month ago? The timing of it is what gets me.
Well, considering how many three and outs he participated in over the last ten years, maybe it's not such an achievement.
It was probably about $5m he is walking away from. His salary and and bonuses this year equal just over $10m, if he doesn't take a pay cut, he most likely gets cut and probably doesn't sign with anyone for more than $5- $6m, that is what he is missing out on. He is a smart guy and realized he was on the downhill side of his career, after earning close to $80-$90m over the last 10 years he probably decided the injury risk was not worth $5m. You need to look at it from the point of view of someone that has earned millions, not guys like you and me that could retire on $5m and be happy.
Sounds like he did let them know earlier, perhaps as early as following the Buffalo game, that he was considering retiring.
Damn... This creates a huge hole in the depth chart but also cap space. Wish he would've decided to do this earlier.
If Stanley drops to 11, then sure, but you don't trade up and reach for a tackle. Especially Taylor Decker who I don't even see as a LT at the next level.
Oh I can def see why he retired. I just think the pay cut issue was more of a factor than other do. If he was making 14 mil next season without issue he would no doubt be playing for that. No doubt when you have LT money from 10 years in the NFL it makes the decision a little easier. And because he's a smart guy he most likely has a good chunk of that money still available. So I am lookin at it from his point of view. 7 mil might not be worth it to him , and thats fine to me. I just think the GM screwed up here. They could've worked it out to where playing another year or two would've been worth it for him. Like I said before , if retirement was that important for Brick he would've done it 2 months ago.
According to Cimini, it sounds like he let the Jets know during the offseason that he was considering retiring. Thus, I'm not sure it's such a matter of the pay cut, as it is Brick just not wanting to play and go through the grind any more. I don't think he was ever a guy who LOVED the game. I think he played because he knew he could make a lot of money, but he always had a very different mind set from most football players. I don't know that Mac screwed anything up. He may have wanted to draft an LT last year, but didn't like any or none were available when the Jets picked that he liked. There were so many holes last year that he couldn't address them all. I think the only way he screwed up is if he was oblivious to Brick's age and that his play was in decline, and then thought he could wait a year or two to replace him. Mac doesn't seem like the oblivious type to me. It may have been a gamble to wait to address the LT position thinking that Brick's play wouldn't decline so quickly, and that allowed him to address some other positions last year. If so, then that would be a mistake, but one that's much easier to see in hindsight, and is understandable considering that Brick never missed a game, only missed 2-3 plays in his career, and the Jets had so many other needs.
That's fair. I do think Brick was a proud player. Many are, and they don't want to play below a certain standard that they set for themselves. When they start playing below that level, there's no amount of money that would keep those types playing, especially if they didn't really love the game and the physical toll it takes to begin with.
I def think the Jets knew it was a possibility. But not having that $$ available during the prime free agency period is now a huge negative. Think about what an extra 9 million in cap space could've done for us a month ago. Either way he's going to be hard to replace , even in his declining years he was still solid enough. Just not worth the money. I would've traded Mo to create that cap space if it was so important. Even if we dont get back a 1st like Mac seems to be holding out for.
The way this roster is built is really a fucking mess. Looks like its going to be 2 steps forward and 1 step back for 2-3 seasons. I was hoping we could get another season out of Brick and maybe 2-3 from Mangold. I'm not liking the chances of that happening right now.
