The golden option would be to get the 11 straight up off the Bears for Mo and take a LT who worked out on that pick. That would be the JAbe for Mangold scenario all over again. Using defensive depth accumulated over time to feed the offense as the line aged out. I'm not really optimistic on that one but it would be a great way to go.
Question for you and the board does Brick suck to the point that he must be replaced immediately, is he overpaid commensurate to his current level of play or both?
Overpaid to his current level of play. That seems obvious. If Brick was paid to his ability, I dont think he'd be a bad option on the line at all.
100% agree with you that he is overpaid on his current level of play but unfortunately he is the best LT we have. Hopefully he wants to finish his career with the Jets and will take a "reasonable" pay cut.
If we all agree that he is just overpaid and Mac is successful in getting him to accept a pay, then maybe OT becomes less of an immediate need to be addressed early in the draft.
Honestly they should have been looking at next wave O-Line guys about 3 seasons ago. I know it seems I have a thing for bashing the last regime, but they did one fantastic hell of a job of completely butchering the drafts and ignoring every position other than DL and CB. Every single o-line guy they picked was a "project".
I feel like his decline wouldn't be so glaring if we could do better on the interior and perhaps had at least one TE capable of blocking to trot out there every now and then. I know that isn't how Gailey rolls, but at least the option would be there.
I disagree. What's money go to do with it? When your QB is being harried, pressured and sacked, are you really gonna say, "Ah, that's not too bad, at least Brick's only being paid $5 million instead of $14.1 million." Brick is toast. He needs to be replaced post haste.
Well if Brick is being paid 9 million less, than that money is going somewhere. Probably Fitz. The money has a lot to do with it. Plus the QB wasnt really being hurried, pressured and sacked this year. Fitz was a huge portion of that, of course. As was the system. I would love to replace Brick with a younger, cheaper option, but is that really out there? Are you willing to risk throwing a rookie out there? I'm not sure I am.

I think we can squeeze another year or two out of Brick even at RT if necessary. But the cap hit has to go down.
I'm not a Maccagnan enthusiast as most are (although he looks to be doing a decent j0b), but I think he played this pretty well. At this point, lowering Brick to around $6 million is still better than what he'd fetch on the open market. If he would've reacted quickly with Brick there wouldn't have been any leverage because the alternative would've been to test him and his agent by saying go out and explore the market, and I feel at that point Brick would've gotten a decent contract from someone. Brick would be solid for one more year at a lower price, especially since we have no one else. Next year, tackle becomes an immediate need, regardless if he plays well or not. Fans like to bash him without acknowledging that with the exception of last year he's had hot garbage next to him at left guard for a couple seasons prior. He didn't play exceptional but he played better than the stupid PFF statistics imply. He's still a viable starter at left tackle.
I agree with getting Brick's cap number down rather than simply getting rid of him for a bottom tier FA or high draft pick. On the topic of Mac, I think Mac is doing a very god job overall. I do get annoyed; however, when posters act as though every decision he makes is the best and only possible decision that could have been made. Although it was short-lived, I experienced the same thing with Idzik early on. There's a draft thread out there I created immediately after the 2013 draft questioning our picks. It's loaded with posters tearing me a new one because Idzik was the new darling at the time.
Similar to how I refuted Maccagnan to some extent in the "Executive of the Year" thread. This offseason and draft is where he'll make his money. He now has all of his guys in place in the scouting department and such so he really needs to pull a couple starters (even if they're future starters) from somewhere in rounds 2-5. If he doesn't we're going to be setup for future failures. Similar to how most of the drafts from 2009-2014 have hurt us, but in particular the 2012 draft where we have 0 players left on the roster from it. Imagine we had 2 legitimate starters on the roster from that draft, we'd be in much better shape.
