http://espn.go.com/blog/new-york-je...-christian-hackenberg-scheduled-to-visit-jets Not worth the time to be honest. I guess they are looking at the 3rd and 4th rounds, seeing what QBs are available. Only QB I would take after Wentz / Goff is Cook, and the Jets also sent scouts and the QB coach to his pro day.
I've seen him make some absolutely big time, elite NFL caliber type throws, and the there's the rest of his game...
Apparently he was trashing his HC during interviews. I think this kid is droppung to the 5th-7th round
On the other hand, this is exactly the type of prospect you take after rounds 1+2… Prototypical size + rare arm strength and very high ceiling. Total boom or bust prospect, who is more likely to bust… but I’d rather take a chance on this type of QB, than a guy who’s arm is so so and will be a career backup at best.
I agree. its not like we would be taking him in the 1st round or anything. Rather bet big on high talent myself in the later rounds. I don't understand this board. Zach Mettenberger is worshipped on here and Christian Hackenberg is hated. They are literally the same type of prospect. Prototypical size, world class arms, but questionable mobility and have struggled to put it all together. At least Hackenberg played with WAY less talent at PSU and not multiple great receivers. He also showed he is tougher than Mettenberger and had some early success.
And I'm one of those guys--but I see two different players. Same size, mobility, etc but I think Mett's arm talent is worlds better than Hack. For me it's simply MY eye test--what I saw of Mett before he went down his senior year was outstanding. I have watched Hack a lot--I was actually at his first game ever in the Meadowlands against my Orangemen. He's just not a good QB IMHO. Again, just my personal opinion--if the staff sees something in him and take him, what do I know? _
They are essentially the same exact prospect. Both had excellent NFL level offensive coordinators with great weapons on the outside in college. Hack had that his freshman yr and Mettenberger had it the one year with Landry and Odell - Cam Cameron coordinated the offense. Both make some bad decisions on the field, but I think Hack had far more responsibility then Mettenberger and I think that's a big difference.
Watched every one of his games...Hack had BOB the 1st year with a serviceable oline and did fine, the last 2 years under Franklin he regressed mostly from lack of guidance and an attrotious offensive line, he ran for his life on every pass attempt. He's 6'4", has a cannon, prototypical pocket passer, throws a great deep ball, can escape the rush, has composure...he's inaccurate at times and needs a good o coordinator to help him
Yeah he needs to go back to school in terms of making decisions on the field pre and post snap. The kid can make reads, but a lot of the times last year, I saw him make some interesting decisions that didn't go particularly well for him. A really good coordinator and some time on the bench could do wonders for him. I however wonder if he is accountable, during the interviews that didn't seem to be the case. Sure it maybe the coaches fault you regressed and your stock dropped, but you don't let teams know that.
Although, he might lack some of the polish, I think physically Hackenberg has a higher caliber arm. In his Freshman year, people were comparing him to Luck. If he put up stats like Mettenberg did in college, he’d go #1 overall.
Lots of grumblings at Penn State about Franklin, he had the courage to say it, if he had BOB for 3 years he might be a top 10 pick
The thing is though, Hackenberg's statements about James Franklin are 100% true. It was a terrible fit and severely damaged his college career. I would be more concerned about him if he went into things lying through his teeth, saying exactly what the scouts want to hear to make himself look better. Johnny Manziel lied his way through the entire draft process, was rewarded, and look where it got him and the team that drafted him. Hackenberg is being blunt and direct in interviews and is being punished for it. It's stupid.
I'm not saying to lie to the coaches like Manziel, but Hackenberg the player still needs to hold himself accountable for his poor play too. I agree the coach was a piece of shit because I saw Penn State games too, that offense had 0 identity. But you can't just say, "oh it's the coaches fault I suck" gotta take some ownership. Talk about the things he could've controlled on the field like taking all those awful sacks against Temple earlier in the year. He can't just blame everything on the coach.
Franklin had an awful offense, they tried doing a bunch of read option stuff. Just throwing paint against the wall hoping it sticks. It is his fault, but Hackenberg needs to prove to coaches he's also accountable for his play.
Loyal, he stayed at Penn State for 3 years when most guys would have left especially after his Sophmore season...might still be at PSU if Franklin was gone
I'm even more interested in Connor Cook and Cardale Jones than Hackenberg. This class hasn't been too hyped up but I think there's a lot of QBs with a chance to start in this league.
The Petty pick along with Geno being on the roster still makes it hard to draft a QB especially reach on one if we think we have a chance at bringing Fitz back.
If he were to transfer, he would lose a year of eligibility no? Makes sense to just take the bullshit and declare.
