Modern American political corruption is more about the close ties between the political arena and the big corporations and law firms that represent those corporations. We're mostly not in the Abscam days any more, where middle-class politicians were looking to get elected so they could accept open bribes and stuff them in mattresses somewhere. Today a pol gets elected and serves for 6 to 10 years and then gets a really cushy job in the beltway somewhere or in corporate America outside the beltway. They become a partner at a big international law firm and represent the Fortune 500. So PAC money that helps somebody get elected year after year is just as lucrative as the under the table stuff that used to happen. It's buying the pol a great future after government with lots of money-making opportunities tied to those elections. You have to rethink how political corruption really works in a world in which the political and corporate arenas are joined at the hip and big contracts awarded during a pol's career pay off in big salaries and bonuses afterwards.
