Obviously money needs to be spent but 2 studs on the line of a 3/4 will get the job done. Even just 1 top talent will make the line not a weakness. They make other players better. My point is without doing anything the Jets are straight until 2021 without drafting anyone and without signing any big free agents. That's a long time from now. Yes there are lots of positions that need to be addressed and that's my point. A majority of this board are freaked out about the thought of losing Mo. I believe the Jets would be a better team if there was $15m worth of linebackers that we picked up in free agency instead of paying a player in a position that's already covered.
too long to paste article: http://www.cbssports.com/nfl/writer...son-to-the-rising-raiders-makes-so-much-sense yet no real mention about what they expect compensation to be........ One real fuckup by the JETS (particularly Idzik) was not locking him up when they had all that cap space 2 years ago
Possibly, but if Mo wanted any where near as much money and guaranteed money then as he does now, it wasn't. That may have been one of the few things that Idzik did right. Br4d is right. Jets players expect too much money because Tanny gave it to them willy-nilly. The only way that culture will change is if our GM draws a line in the sand and says "no more." We'll lose some players in the process, but going forward things will be better for the team and Mac will be able to build and keep a competitive team that has sustainable success.
I agree that the odds were better then, and Idzik may have had a realistic chance of signing him but was too cheap or maybe Mo thought that Idzik wasn't going to succeed in building a competitive team with the Jets and decided to just play out the string and then move elsewhere. Too bad we'll never probably know what the truth is.
Feel sorry for Mo he was the only Jet who gave a shit in the Bills disaster and got a broken leg for his effort, he's been a good Jet
Idizk was on record as saying he'd rather get fired for doing the right thing than keep his job by doing the wrong thing. He was prophetic when it came to the Jets GM position. He really shouldn't have taken the job with the limitations in place. The lure of being the top guy was too strong for him after years of being one of the consults.
id love a dumb raiders move like when they got carson palmer.... like them signing mo even though he was tagged and giving us 2 first rounders.
Another way to look at it is that if we trade Mo, the players might view Macc as having no loyalty to career long Jets, especially considering we let Snacks go. They might then be less likely to want to be team players in their negotiations.
They could look at it that way. Mac has no control over how they see things. He just has to do things the right way, and things should work out. Part of that will be drafting players with the right attitude. If players can't see, understand and accept that Idzik tried for a year, Mac tried for 2 years to sign Mo, and the cap situation the Jets are in, then they probably all need to go anyway because they're too stupid to win anything. At any rate, most of them will be gone in 2 years anyway, so it really doesn't matter what they think.
No one giving two first round picks for Muhammad Wilkerson. The Jets probably won't even get a first round pick for him. Some of you fans need to wake up. The Jets are in really bad shape in regards to the cap. They want to re-sign Ryan Fitzpatrick, than there is only a couple moves they can make.
Mo & his agent deliberately wouldn't re-sign before they saw what Watt got. Wilkerson is no where near worth what JJ Watt is, not only on the field, but in terms of marketability. He has better pass rushing statistics than Suh, McCoy and Dareus, and they all got deals worth $100 million, if not a little less or a little more. While you can argue that he may not be as disruptive as those three, he is comparable in every aspect of their respective games, and has mostly posted more tackles and sacks than all three. If anyone thinks he'd accept a deal less than an average of $15 million a year, over 5 or so years, they're being blind. McCoy was re-signed for gigantic money to a team with unlimited cap space. The Bills re-signed Dareus right away, and he will be the centerpiece of their defense (not to mention there's no one on that defense that makes near the amount of money he does). The Dolphins screwed up the future of their entire team by signing Suh to that contract, and Tannenbaum is continuing to throw away picks at will. I'll quote a post I made a while back analyzing the contracts of similar players & production. Add in the fact that Vernon just got an $85 million contract with sack seasons of 11.5, 6.5 and 7.5 the past three seasons (as an edge rusher), and Malik Jackson just received a 6yr/$90 million deal with sack seasons of 6.0, 3.0 and 5.0. Wilkerson averages 60.4 tackles/year, & 7.3 sacks/year. McCoy averages 31.3 tackles/year & 5.8 sacks/year. Suh averages 49.8 tackles/year & 7 sacks/year. Dareus averages 50.4 tackles/year & 6.1 sacks/year. Calais Campbell averages 56 tackles/year & 6.1 sacks/year. Cameron Jordan averages 48 tackles/year & 7.8 sacks/year. Tell me where we're getting a bargain price for him? Whether we re-signed Wilk this year or with Idzik, he and his agent would've wanted the same lucrative contract.
Ideally I hope the Jets demand king's ransom for Wilks or don't move him. Demand a 1st or a 2nd + 3rd at minimum. The big issue here is that they are 3m over the cap now, so they need to free 8m in cap space just to break even and sign our upcoming draft picks. There's no chance Mo stays if they sign Fitz. They can restructure Brick to get near the 8m needed, but it's pretty much going to be a choice between Fitz and Mo, which really sucks because both were huge contributors last season and either way it will lead to the team taking a step back. Given the choice, I'd take the pro bowler in his prime over the washed up QB approaching the end of his career, but the Jets have never had a QB that scored that much before so I can understand why it's tough to let Fitz go.
The problem is we let other teams set the market, instead of setting it ourselves. Vernon's contract is front-loaded BIG TIME. Mac and the Jets would have to get creative with Mo's contract. The problem is we let Free Agency define Mo's market which I said 2 years would be a big mistake. We also gave Revis an absurd amount of cash. I think this is just the beginning and could worsen with Sheldon and his pay-day. There's a big possibility we lose all 3. Snacks, Mo and Sheldon.
We won't move him for a kings ransom because the Jets can't. He will be gone next year and we will get a comp pick.
It's not a matter so much of which player you want going forward, it's a matter of which player can be replaced more easily. Wilkerson has a combination of Richardson/Williams (both Pro Bowl calibre players), and now Jenkins/McLendon & other depth players behind him. Fitzpatrick has trash Geno and 4th round inexperienced Petty at the most important position in all of football. I feel a lot more comfortable in Williams/Richardson/Jenkins replacing Mo than Petty/Geno replacing Fitz. Well, while it would suck, it's still an outside rushers game. How many dominant defenses are being anchored by these incredible inside forces? How many times do you watch a game and see a 3technique or 5technique take over a game like a Von Miller/Demarcus Ware/Justin Houston do today or a Robert Mathis/Dwight Freeney/Jared Allen/Shawne Merriman did previously? Suh did in his contract year and for an on and off period before that when he felt like playing. Watt does on a week to week basis. While the rest are good players, none of them are play to play pocket wreckers on passing downs. There's a difference between being a good player and bring a player that is game planned around. Those players are worth the $100 million. The rest are not. Wilk deserves about $12 million a year at most whIle the market says he's due $16 million. It's not a pleasure to watch him go, but I'd rather not mortgage the future of potentially keeping Pryor/Williams and even Mauldin if he becomes a player or any young offensive star we usher in. You can reastically stretch $16 million into two solid starters.
