Right, but explain to me how a team competes with as much money tied up in the defense as the Jets would have there with Revis, Mo, Harris, the other defensive lineman coming up and Pryor? It's just not going to happen. Signing Mo to a huge contract would be Same Old Jets. We'd be cap strung in a few years and unable to make a competitive offer to Calvin Pryor, who if he looks as good as he did last year will be looking for the absolute top of the safety market in terms of dollars when he hits free agency. "They did it for Revis, they did it for Mo, they're going to have to do it for me or I am going to let the free market decide my value." You have to stop that dynamic at some point if you want to be a good franchise. Everybody wants top money just doesn't work in a capped environment. Unfortunately the Jets didn't hold the line with Revis, who was going post-prime so now they have to do it with Mo who is in his prime. It sucks but it's probably the reality. Just do the math for 2017, which will be Richardson's 5th season and Pryor's 4th season (better lock him up that year or uh oh) and Williams 3rd season (the year to try to lock him up to a high but reasonable contract when you still have his rights for 2 more years.) Look at who the Jets will have on the other side of the ball with Mangold and D'Brick and Marshall and Decker all headed into contract years if they are still here. Mauldin IV needs to get locked up the same year Williams does if he's really good and the Jets have no 5th year option to exercise on him. It's a lot of money.
Are you really complaining about hitting on so many defensive draft picks? If you don't have the QB you have to build your defense. Let's see where these guys end up at the end of their contracts before anointing them top dollar free agents.
It sucks, but you're right. We need relief. Mac has to be allowed to do it from the ground up. I'm starting to hope we can get something good for Mo to free up room for Mac to maneuver better. We're getting pinched here and it's hurting us It will certainly help that Sheldon doesn't self destruct. But, Big Cat taking the next step up this year and becoming a big player for us would really be huge in moving on from Mo.
What you're proposing is mathematically very hard to do. Go on Over the Cap and run your ideas through the cap calculator. You'll see what I mean. While it may be possible, pretty much everything will have to break Macc's way. As in, Fitz will take 10M per, Brick will take a pay cut of a few million dollars, and most importantly, Mo will actually agree to a long term deal.
Looking back, Macc actually planned his spending pretty well. But his plan fell apart because of two things he didn't see coming. 1. Richardson getting on the wrong side of the league's drug policy, which makes it that much harder to trade Mo willingly. 2. Fitz playing so well he is now in line for an eight figure salary. Now Macc has to either have some luck come his way, pray that Richardson doesn't screw up again, or let Fitz go and pray Geno/Petty/RG3 can play up to Fitz's standard.
Why does most people on here always want to trade our best players when it time to pay them? You don't build winners like that.
For the first time ever, I agree with you. I mean, it was bound to happen, what with your constant anti-fan trolling garbage, but I'm still surprised for some reason.
Why is everyone in such a hurry to spend money. 2016 We have to pay Mo 16m 2017 We don't have to pay the line hardly anything 2018 We have to pay Richardson 17m 2019 We don't have to pay the line hardly anything 2020 We don't have to pay the line hardly anything 2021 We have to pay Williams 18m We will have a great line for the next 6 years and it doesn't need to cost us more than the cost of the franchise tag. That leaves us with a ton of room to grow any position we see fit. I don't understand your obsession with locking up players early. Paying before you need to is the outlier not the norm.
I mean Long Island Blitz did just mention that exact point a few posts earlier so technically you were agreeing with LIB through geno-007 lol
Wilkerson's agent Chad Wiestling @cwiestling Barring any major setbacks with rehab, Mo Wilkerson will indeed be playing for someone at beginning of 2016 NFL season!
Contrary to those of us saying we're in cap hell ... we're far from hell we're in a tough bind this season mostly because we didn't expect Fitz to have the season he did. Yes we lost Snacks but our line will still be strong and we've added adequate replacements 2 for the price of 1 and money on top of it. At first I wanted to trade Mo but I'm starting to warm up to the fact of keeping him ... we've got 42 million in space next season where we expect Petty to take over so that will save us money ... not to mention by cutting Brick and Revis next year we would have a total of 64 mil in space ... EDIT: 64 mil minus whatever we use to sign Mo long term so close to 50 which is still PLENTY !
Here's why: 2017 - lose our 2011 1st round pick with low compensation in return. 2018 - pay Richardson 17M 2019 - lose one of our 2013 1st round picks with low compensation in return 2020 - pay Williams 18M (he was drafted in 2015, so his option year is 2019), Lose Mauldin IV unless we locked him up in 2018 or 2019 2021 - lose our 2015 1st round pick with low compensation in return You cannot keep losing your 1st round picks on that kind of carousel. It's bad for us that we're going to lose Mo at this point, however that's how the situation is set right now. Losing Richardson in 2018, Mauldin IV (if he's good) in 2019 and then Williams in 2021 is just really bad. Another way to look at it is that our defense looks like this right now if they all hit free agency in their respective years: LDE - Mo is gone in 2017 at the latest NT - vacant at the moment until we see who takes the job, we lost Snacks this year because we couldn't lock him up early RDE - Williams gets a big deal by 2020 or he is gone in 2021 DE - Richardson is very hazy at the moment, could be suspended for up to the season by the NFL with only a request to return as the option, like Josh Gordon, if his arrest is deemed to violate the substance abuse policy. He likely didn't report the arrest right away because it would have triggered a mandatory drug test upon the report. LOLB - vacant, Pace is ancient LILB - Harris is post-prime and expensive RILB - vacant ROLB - Mauldin IV (has to work out here for the Jets), gone in 2019 if good and not signed to a big deal before that LCB - Revis, big contract and going post-prime SS - Pryor, has to be locked up by 2018 or he will be hard to retain FS - Gilchrist, reasonable deal RCB - Marcus Williams if we're lucky and he works out. Will need a new contract in that situation this year or he's a RFA next year, then UFA like Snacks in 2018 We're talking about losing half the defense before injuries by 2020. Are we just going to keep using the 1st round pick on a defensive player every year to maintain the quality and hope we get lucky with another guy or two working out on that side of the ball?
BTW has Mo signed the tender ... if he hasn't yet that could explain how we're still able to sign guys without going OTC
I don't think we actually signed Jenkins and McLendon. Their salaries aren't showing up on OTC for one. It seems like we have handshake agreements with them at the moment.
Destroy and Rebuild. How long do you really think Revis will be under that cap figure? This could be David Harris's last season with the Jets. Mangold? Brick? By 2020 these players won't be on the roster. So where's the money gonna go? What this means is we need to continue the youth movement via the draft and continue to acquire talent. We have a situation where the Jets have a shot at winning some games and staying competitive without hampering the cap going forward. We should have enough for Mo going forward and same with Richardson (2018 if he stays out of trouble, which seems to be something you are banking on). You got Pryor (2019) coming up but other then that, who will be needing a big deal other then Williams in 2020? I see your numbers, but you also have to remember contracts are much more complex then just throwing a number out there like 18, 19M. There are front-loads, back-end options. Guaranteed money. Take into account the increase in cap year by year. We've hit really good on the draft with some of these D-Lineman, it's best to figure out a way to retain our best home-grown talent because getting good home-grown talent is a foreign thing for the Jets right now. http://www.spotrac.com/nfl/new-york-jets/cap/2018/ We aren't hurting in 2018.
Saying his plan fell apart is silly. I sincerely doubt that is the case. Are there now some unexpected obstacles in his path? Yes, undoubtedly, but that doesn't mean that his plan fell apart. Mac is smart. I'm sure he had a Plan B in place and contingencies to deal with various situations. Also, no one could have foreseen those two problems. I'm not sure based on your wording, but your statement could be interpreted as Mac didn't see those two things coming but other GMs would have or might have. Saying he has to have "luck" come his way, is equally silly. Give the man some credit. He has been making good moves. He has come across as prepared, thoroughly professional and competent in everything he has done to date. Just because have nothing (no way out of this dilemma) doesn't mean that Mac does. I also agree with point #2. I don't think Fitz is in line for an 8-figure salary, but if he is, it has more to do with the insane contracts that the Eagles handed Bradford and the Texans handed Osweiler than it does Fitz' play.
