His value is a first round pick, at least. If no one wants to match that then he is ours for another year.
As much as I don't want to trade Mo, we have a cap space problem thanks to the arrivals of McLendon and Jenkins. If we keep Mo, we must rework the OL and either go into the season with Geno and Petty as our QBs or mortgage the future with restructures.
Trading Mo would free up cap space. But there are other ways as well. For one getting D'brick to take a pay cut could free up some space, and I don't think restructuring a few of the veterans contracts would hurt us too bad. We have 45 million in space next year. We were one game away from the playoffs and possibly ready to make a run. I am willing to cut into next years huge number if it means making a playoff run. As our team is built right now we have a three year window before most of our vets are too old, if not less. We are not in rebuild mode we should be in win now mode.
We had cap problems before that. That's why Harrison is gone and Fitzpatrick is a free agent. But a lot of the signings make me think someone on the d-line is going to go...
Trading Mo is the best thing to do. He's NOT gonna sign long term with us because he wants a ridiculous amount of guaranteed money that he's not gonna get ($40 million or more). It's better to get a 2nd round pick if we can this year than a bottom of the 3rd round pick next year. We are not in "win now" mode, neither are we in a classic "rebuild" mode. We are in a retool mode and seeking to be as competitive as we can while we upgrade the roster. We do not have a 3 year window. Brick should already be gone, and at best, this is his last season as a starter. Mangold will be gone in 2 years tops. Revis could very well be gone after this year. Harris will probably be gone in 1-2 years. So who is this veteran core that will be here in 3 years?
If we were to go all in on next season, we would do before the draft something like sign Fitz to a 3Y/30M deal, sign Erin Henderson for a couple/few million, and bring back Randy Bullock on a cheap deal/draft a punter. To get us a few million under the cap (needed to sign the rookies/make midseason signings), we would have to: 1. Cut Giacomini and Folk. 2. Get Brick to take a pay cut of a few million. 3. Restructure Mangold, Decker, and Marshall (trust me, it's better than restructuring Revis). We would then be about 14 million under the cap heading into next season. At that point, we would either have signed Mo long term, meaning that we would need to restructure more contracts in 2017 to get us under the cap then, and we would have to let Richardson go. Or we would let Mo leave and collect the compensatory pick. Doesn't sound too appealing, does it?
I think his trade value at this point is similar to John Abraham's trade value in 2006: a late 1st or an early 2nd in the QB range. Maybe a flop of picks in a later round with the team giving us the early 2nd if that's what it takes to make up the difference between the late 1st and an early 2nd. By early 2nd I mean first 4 picks of the round. No point in making the trade if it's not in the QB hit zone at that point.
Lol it does not have to be done like that. And yes trading Mo is our best option but if you don't get value I don't see the point. A second round pick has a 50-50 shot at starting in the league.... And that's not in the first year that's overall. So what actually sounds better is keeping Mo for this year and continuing to build for the future. How would you feel if we traded for a player in the second round that had the production of Devin Smith last year. You would probably call for Macs head. So if your saying we only have one or two years with the veterans on this team, who are the best players on our team, why wouldn't you be in win now mode? There numbers will be off the books in two to three years as no one except Revis is signed further than that. Also by restructuring you don't have to push their entire cap number into the future you can do a percentage. Having 25 million in cap space prior to the at least 10 million dollar bump is still more than enough for next year. And that's if we restructure 20 million!!! And you're right I wouldn't touch Revis's contract. But players like Mangold and Brandon Marshall still have some years left and pushing two or three million into the future isn't all that terrible. We will still have cap flexibility going forward and in a few years be right back to cap heaven. Continuity is key in my perspective going into next year as it's basically the best we can do this year. Signing Fitz is a priority, finding an ILB is a priority, finding an OLB is a priority, and if we can add youth to our offensive line that would be great. Hopefully a player like Breno can be upgraded at a similar cap hit and Brick has to take a pay cut. Henderson should be resigned. And I think adding Dwight Freeny at OLB would give us flexibility going into the draft. If they are too expensive there are a slew of capable players in this league who can man the fort while we develop our draft picks. The draft is key and we must produce... By addressing positions of need in Free Agencey we can go with best talent available. During the draft we can elect to add youth to our LBing core in the first few rounds or OL in the first few rounds or a mixture of both depending on our draft board and how the draft plays out. All this being said, trading Mo would be ideal if we get proper compensation. But this is simply if no team is willing to be reasonable towards our asking price.
I'd much rather get back the 34 pick plus a flop of 4th rounders with that team for Mo than a comp pick in 2018 that may not happen anyway depending on what we do in free agency. Realistically we're not keeping Mo at this point. No defense can afford to have 2 15M+ players on it and with Revis that's what we'd have. Then you have to look at what Richardson and Williams will want if we pay Mo, a guy drafted later than them like that and they turn out to be as good as him, which seems like a real possibility. Really no defense can afford even one player making $15M a year. Nobody but the QB should be making that kind of money based on the number of times they directly effect the end result in a game.
The 34th pick plus a swap of fourth rounders is equivalent to a late first round pick.... Which is acceptable but not ideal.
Speaking of trades involving the Titans in the 2015 draft, a report went around today of an ex-Eagles executive giving out the Philly offer for Mariota: - 2015 1st round pick - 2015 2nd round pick - 2016 1st round pick - "Any quarterback on the roster" - "Any defensive player on the roster" As much as I liked Mariota, I would've taken 2 1s, a 2, Fletcher Cox and Sam Bradford for him. That's a haul.
It's what we're likely to get at this point given that Mo will be very expensive for his new team and there are injury concerns. He's been hurt at the end of 2 straight seasons now, a lot like JAbe.
If Mariota finds a way to bulk up he'll be ok. He really does not have an ideal build for a QB. He's tall enough but he has very narrow shoulders and hips for a guy his size. He's also going to have to avoid that one hit that will do him. RGIII kept getting hit and it really did him.
JAbe was also a malcontent who only played when he wanted.... He sat out a playoff game for something he could have played through. Mo is an ideal citizen. But it seems about right.
This team is always looking to trade its star players.......Find me a successful franchise where this concept works. There's a reason we haven't won a Superbowl in 50 years and things like this won't bring us any closer.Like trading Mo is some kind of guarnteed sucess, its a horrible idea.
The Patriots have regularly let their second contract stars go. They keep the guy if his demands are reasonable but they usually find a way to let him go and still profit if he's looking for top of the market. They paid Darrelle Revis $12M, or about $1.5M below market last year and he was the best CB they've had in a decade or more.
You can't compare what we do to what the Pats do.....you have got to be kidding. They have Brady and multiple Superbowls in the last decade they can do what they want because it works. We aren't the Pats we are the Same Old Jets until proven otherwise. When they finish 10-6 its considered a bad year, when we finish 10-6 we want confetti, parades, our QBs want monster contracts etc....We don't have a Tom Brady to hide the other flaws and holes on the roster,we need our best players
