Great news! Beachum left Jacksonville without signing a contract. They wanted him to and he refused. We're still in the running.
yes and a salary of 9.5. if mac can gets him to take a cut to 5 he is still making that 5.and the jets are saving 4.5. about where he should be paid. if not he is cut and moving to another team for likely less than 5. the dead money is money he already received. it has no bearing on his salary this year. only his cap number
IMO signing Beachum could very well be the most significant free agency move for us short of trading Mo. I look at it from a cap reduction perspective of course, and the very likely exit of Ferguson or hefty restructure as a result. Add the eventual release of Giacomini and it will give Mac some much needed elbow room. I do worry some about the risk of releasing a steady and healthy albeit declining LT for one coming off an ACL tear. Wish we had more depth on the OL. I have excluded the QB situation because I think Mac has already baked in the target salary....be it Fitz or RGIII.
Right. Getting him to take a cut to $5 million would be awesome, but I think I'd rather have Beachum and he battle it out in TC. If Beachum beats him out, let Brick sit his last year in green and white.
I agree. Signing Beachum could be huge! I think it would be great to get Brick to take a cut to $5 million, and still sign Beachum. If Beachum is healthy, they could either let the two of them battle it out in TC, or they could go with Brick, but if he falters badly to start the season, replace him with Beachum. In addition, the Jets said that Qvale could play either RT or LT. If they weren't just blowing smoke, then they could draft a RT, cut Giacomini, and they'd still have better depth than they had had in a good while at OT.
Can we redo his deal say add a year and pro rate money ... in essence lowering his cap hit ... how does that part work
Are you talking about Brick? If so, why in the world would he want to keep him around a year longer? He was pretty awful this past season. It's time for him to retire and for the Jets to move on. If we cut him after this season, we'll save over $13 million on the cap for next season.
I don't but he could always be moved to RT and instead of him costing us 14 million we could give him a new contract at say 15 million for the next 3 years
My question is in regards to ripping up contracts and re writing them how does that effect the cap ... using Brick for reference here
It would be, but I don't think Beachum visiting all these teams and leaving without a contract necessarily points to the Jets. If anything it points to him returning home to Pittsburgh I would think, but who knows really.
i would guess Beachum will cost a good amount then.. whether i'm interested in him for the Jets depends on that cost. i don't think he's a 10M per year player, but he may get that amount.
Whether we want to pay a player that or not, its starting to become obvious that if you want a free agent you're going to overpay, especially at any position considered "premium" in QB, LT, CB, or DL. It'll be interesting to see what happens but I don't think we have much of a choice but to sign Okung or Beachum and possibly overpay. That gives us the free reign to play around with our first two picks in getting two linebackers or a LB and an offensive lineman. If we don't sign one of them we're hedging our bets on Breno AND Brick being serviceable or rolling the dice and banking on a rookie playing at a high level.
This. If the feeling is beachum would be a similar level player then absolutely. Question is, would he be? Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk
