I thought Matakevich was OK, but Wright and Brothers hurt themselves this combine with their 40 times. Especially Brothers.
Floyd, Lee, Jenkins, Jones in that order. Maybe we grab two of these 4? We need speedy linebackers badly
Man do I really want Floyd. With him going off like this at the combine he could switch back to going before Spence. Either one could be there at 20 and should be the pick. If Zeke is on the board it'll be interesting.
Straight line 40 speed for a LB may be overrated. They showed a graphic today of the top 10 combine LB 40 times. They all had times between 4.4 and 4.5 but none of them amounted to anything.
Exactly. That's why I want to see the shuttle and cone drill times. Still, LBs have to sometimes give chase and they have to rush the QB, if they're slow or take a while to get to full speed, then they're useless imo. We've seen enough of that.
He was who I wanted in the 2nd, but I don't think he lasts that long now. He ran a good 40 and looked smooth during the on field drills.
Off that list the guys that I most like. ILB's Scooby Wright III and Dominique Alexander. I kind of prefer Alexander, even though he's undersized. The Jets have a thumper, at least for one more year, on the inside in Harris. The team really needs speed and someone who can cover and I think Alexander is the better of the two in those regards. JMHO. Though I probably wouldn't touch either before the third. OLB's I really like Darron Lee, Su'a Cravens off that list the most (of guys who I think will be there at 20 or lower anyway. A project guy I find intriguing is Dadi Nicholas, but he's not someone I would risk more than a 4th (if the Jets picked up an additional 4th) or a 5th on. He's a high bust potential guy who could, and I say could, explode in the right scheme. DE's that can play 3-4 OLB I'd love for Spence's off field issues to drop him to #20, doubt it will happen but if he were there at 20 that's a no brainer IMHO. I'm kind of steering away from those this year from guys who are traditional 3-4 OLB because I really think the Jets need to boost their speed this year, but if Noah fell oh hell yes grab him.
I didn't realize Floyd hurt himself after his 4.6 run. He tweaked his groin and will have to redeem himself at his pro-day. I don't think it'll hurt his stock. I can see him going #14 to the Raiders.
I didn't know he had either, but I agree that it shouldn't hurt his draft stock. I hope you're wrong about the Raiders, however, but fear you're probably right. Even if they don't take him, someone else likely will.
falling in love with this guy Leonard Floyd's game. serious speed for an OLB .. he's slim but has a good lean and swim move he uses to lay hard hits on qbs .. he's 6'6-6'7..crazy lanky, uses those long arms to make plays half way across the field! only about 230 lbs though.. I haven't seen it but I've read in multiple places he can even play man in coverage. he could make a difference opposite of Mauldin. not sure if he's first round good definitely a second IMO... but a lot of experts have him going in the first
I watched a very intriguing mock on the NFL network that had the Jets picking Elliot at 20. If Powell is gone, knowing that Ivory is not at all a 3 down back which the Jets surely lack, this pick wouldn't surprise me - BPA.
Funny how these days leading up to the draft always play out.. i went from full on draft o-line heavy to full on draft zeke to full on draft Leonard Floyd lol.
For both need and value, I think ILB is a bigger immediate concern to the Jets than OLB. A borderline heathen viewpoint, I know, but hear out my logic. We had Sheldon Richardson dropping into coverage last year while we sent A-gap blitzes. While TB is a great defensive mind who has to mix things up sometimes, Richardson was playing a more OLB role that he frankly wasn't suited for far too often. I think this was because our ILBs frankly could not be really trusted in coverage roles, so we were forced to blitz them more often than we should have - this is TB disguising a problem with our short-area coverages by using unconventional blitz angles as best as he can - the mark of a good defensive mind doing the best he can with what he has. Were we to get a true 3-down ILB who could be more trusted in the coverage role, I think it has a ripple effect where it lets our dominant defensive line play to their strengths a bit more for 2016. Long-term I'm not sure order really matters - we need both a faster ILB and an OLB who can rush the passer, and we're almost certainly going to lose one of our defensive line trio after the 2016-2017 season. I think we're also (as draft people tend to do) looking at the first round a little too closely. I can see some potential value picks in the second-third round here. The Jaylon Smith question - re: his injury status - is a large one as well. Where do you decide to take the risk on a guy with his injury status? (I've heard everything from he'll make a full recovery and be back week 7-8 to the worlds "nerve damage" and likely missing all of 2016 . I'd add that even if he's back mid-season he probably won't be a huge contributor until 2017 - missing camp with an injury for a rookie REALLY sucks.)
Both positions are big positions of need. At present, we only have one starter at OLB and only one at ILB. OLBs are supposed to drop into coverage as well. In general, more pressure is more important than more coverage. You do have a point, however. Clay Matthews moved inside at GB and he still rushes/pressures opposing QBs, but his athleticism and speed allows him to drop into coverage and make more plays vs the run as well. As far as the blitzing, Bowles likes to blitz a lot, so don't be surprised to see a lot of blitzes even once we get quality OLBs and ILBs with coverage ability. I will be happy to see us get a stud at either position.
