The Ryan Fitzpatrick stalemate remains the hot story, so allow me to share a few Monday morning thoughts on theNew York Jets' uncertain quarterback situation :

    1. The Jets evidently don't value Fitzpatrick as much as we thought. Publicly, they've said all the right things, consistently praising him, but no team lets its starting quarterback twist in limbo unless it's OK with the prospect of losing him to another team. Fitzpatrick doesn't appear to be a "priority" free agent, which is how coach Todd Bowles described him at the end of the season. What the Jets are saying with their hardball stance is, "We think last season was an aberration." Frankly, I think they're underestimating the intangibles Fitzpatrick brought to the locker room.

    2. You can't help but wonder if Fitzpatrick's poor performance in the season finale changed the organization's view of him. "No, it didn’t," Bowles said the day after the game. "He had a good season. He won a bunch of games for us. You can’t tarnish that. He’s not going to be great every quarter. It just happened to be that it was yesterday and it was the last game." Still, you wonder. Are we having this conversation if the Jets had won the game to make the playoffs?

    3. No one is saying Fitzpatrick is worthBrock Osweilermoney at $18 million a year (I can't believe I just wrote that), but Fitzpatrick certainly deserves more than the offer that is believed to be on the table -- $7 million to $8 million. Let's assume that's the total guarantee. That would put him 29th among quarterbacks, according to ESPN data.

    4. The Jets' interest in Robert Griffin III appears legitimate, not simply a leverage play against Fitzpatrick, but do they really see him as a starting quarterback option? General manager Mike Maccagnan is a smart football man, so it's hard to imagine he thinks a Griffin-Geno Smith-Bryce Pettytroika is the way to go. The three quarterbacks combined for one game played last season, a relief appearance by Smith.

    5. If the Jets sign Griffin, it'll be based, in part, on their belief in Chan Gailey. At One Jets Drive, the offensive coordinator is considered a quarterback whisperer. Griffin would be the ultimate reclamation-project challenge.

I don't see how RG3 coming to new york would cause a tebow like circus, it makes no sense. When tebow came everyone in the world was watching, barely anyone cares about jets and RG3

When a once great franchise gives away multiple 1st round picks and a ton of money to get you, it can give ya a big head.

Mac seems to look for value in recovered injured players with a lot of upside, but also older players he thinks still have a couple years left in them. He hasn't shown much in the way of overpaying them... except for Revis.

Then you compound that with immediate success, I see your point. However, it's not like he ended being Ryan Leaf, RG never treated the media or his teammates poorly.

Maybe Snyder meddled too much and it fractured the locker room, but that's not RG fault, that was between owner and HC.

I think it's based off of all the drama that went down in D.C. I don't think it reaches Tebow level coverage, but RGIII does bring baggage with him. IIRC there was some locker room drama and how apparently the 'Skins owner giving him somekind of preferable treatment and idk. I feel like some of that stuff could be revisited by the media no matter where he goes, especially in NY.

Kinda like the "Sanchize" situation, given the world without earning it. I think RG would be a good fit here, if he can stay healthy.

If RG3 came here and jets started winning I guarentee that the media will forget all about that stuff

I mean I think the Jets have a pretty good training staff, you can tell by *knocks on wood* that we had so little injuries this year except for Devin smiths freak one.

To be fair, if (for some unknown reason) Smith started next year, won 10 games, and took the NYJ to the playoffs, the media wouldn't just forget about his past - they'd spin the narrative, and he'd be a redemption/resurrection story. Whereas there might be similar notes with RG3, I don't think that he hit the depths of Smith (trying to pass the football to himself behind his back comes to mind...).

Playing a professional football game and not posting a passer rating also comes to mind

It's a lot of media spinning l. RG3 even rationalized some of the things he has said that has garnered headlines.

In essence: "If I don't go out there and think I am or I am going to be the best quarterback out there what am I doing?" We've seen headlines like this turned around into " I'm the best quarterback in the NFL."

Similar to Sheldon "I guarantee a victory" coming from "I guarantee we'll win if we play our best." These guys need to know better in the media but it's really as harmless as can be and reporters tend to pick on the weak or vulnerable so to speak.

Hey genobots. Geno will not be the starter no matter who signs or doesn't sign. He has pro QB ability with a QB IQ of zero. SORRY!!!!!

Ya I think $8 will be the ceiling depending on how much RG3 wants too... Kap is way to high unless they want to take Breno in the deal lol

I pray RG3 will not be signed by the Jets. Not only would it be a media circus, and not only is he a turnover machine, but the guy absolutely cannot stay healthy. If we cannot reach a deal with Fitz and absolutely had to I'd rather go into the season and roll the dice on Petty from day 1. Let him get all the reps in training camp. The worst thing that could happen is we waste money on RG3 then he goes down in game 2 and we have to throw Petty (or god forbid, Geno) into the fire cold.

You're wanting to re-sign Fitz, yet you call Griffin a "turnover machine"? Pot/kettle.
