I don't recall the exact figures but the Jets "had" to spend the carryover last year, they aren't allowed to carryover forever.
Yes there was a salary floor. No I'm not sure what it was and it's hard to look up but you're allowed to carry at least 10-15 million over.
It looks like the carryover from '14 to '15 was about $13mm. The carryover from '15 to '16 is about 3mm. Add to it that over a revolving 4 year period each team has to spend minimum of 89% of the cap figure. The combination of hitting that 89% target (thanks Idzik) and spending the '14 carryover caused them to spend $$ last year. The Revis contract isn't that bad if you consider it a 2 year deal. If they cut him after this year yes there is $8mm in dead money but a cap savings of around $7.5mm. The dead money comes out of Woody's pocket so who cares. He did the right thing in locking down corners for '15 and since Cro's deal wasn't guaranteed like Revis's he had the option to cut Cro after last year, which he did. The options are obvious this year, Breno and D'Brick have to go or be restructured. It looks like he'll wait until after the draft then cut Breno. I'm guessing when the QB situation comes to a conclusion you'll see D'Brick cut and restructured or cut and a guy like Beachum signed. Just found more details... from what I read for '13/'14 league years the Jets had a $34mm shortfall in reaching the 89% target. So $34mm had to be spent in '15/'16 just to catch up to 89%. Add to it the carryover from '14 into '15 and you can see why they had to spend so much.
Training camp and weekly game prep is VERY demanding. Especially on 30+ yr old vets who've all seen it before, many many times. Brett Favre wanted no part of training camp and typically held out till the very last minute (including with the Jets). So...if I were HC I'd cut a deal with older but valuable vets like 'Brick, Mangold, Harris, Revis, etc making mandatory mini camps and 50% of training camp 'voluntary'. Rex would occasionally give a vet a day off during training camp. I'd expand that concept to make camp much more 'vet friendly'. We may be the only team in the NFL to do this, but it would make NY Jets a great place for older vets to stay (sometimes for less pay) and for older but still great FA vets a great place to migrate to. Thoughts?
Sounds very illegal in the realm of circumventing the CBA. I also wouldn't want my key veterans missing that much of camp. They don't practice enough as it is and they still all tear their ACL's, imagine that with less practice time?
D'Brick's contract is much more painful. Revis brings respect to the secondary and the defense in general with his name. D'Brick is not worth anything close to his current contract and MoWilk is not worth the $15M he will be getting. That is why we are in cap hell.
You really think Clady is going anywhere for the minimum? He would only get cut by the Broncos if he won't restructure. Why would he go to NY for the minimum?
Clady is going to have a hard time getting much money imo. He signed a big contract with the Broncos in 2013, didn't play well that year, and has missed most of the last two seasons. He's going to have to prove that he's healthy and can stay healthy. I think he's going to have to sign a "prove it" deal loaded with incentives.
I'm not sure. He's missed two of the past three seasons. He's an excellent player but he can't be counted in. Maybe grasping a bit at the minimum comment, but no team will want to sink big money into him.
I don't want to see the Jets become a retirement home for senior citizen NFLers. Screw 'em. If we have an older vet like Marshall, Harris or Mangold then sure, let Bowles rest them some during TC. He did that last year. I don't want that as a recruitment tool for signing FAs, however.
Why wouldn't he just do that for the Broncos? If they are asking him to restructure, they can't drop his salary to lower than the minimum. If the Broncos didn't want him, they would cut him. Obviously they want him at a lower price. Why would he take the minimum from the Jets when, worst case scenario, he gets minimum from his current team?
I didn't say that he would take the minimum from the Jets or anyone. I just said that he isn't going to get much from anyone.
If there's a new coaching staff with a new O and D being installed than yes, you're absolutely right, they all need to be there 100%. But if we're in year 3-4-5 of the SAME offense/defense then giving older vets extended time off during the rigors of training camp could have several benefits: older vets will be more rested, less banged up (these guys don't heal as fast), younger players who almost never get a shot at practicing with the 'ones' get more snaps/reps. Rex had a rep of running an easy camp, which players loved. This would still be true, but only for the older vets. The younger players and rookies would still get their asses kicked (maybe even more so!). Plus coaches would have more time to coach up the younger guys without all the older vets hogging all the key reps. Last year with new players, coaches, etc it was imperative for Fitz/Decker/Marshall to get as many reps as possible. This year? Not so critical. Fitz having a day off with Bryce Petty getting the #1 reps wouldn't be horrible. Oh well, just a thought.
Have to think something big is about to happen with these signings. No way do we have the cap space ...
I agree. After McLendon's deal no way that one of Wilk or Ferguson will not be moved. If we announce the McLendon signing we will not have 1M cap space and don't have QB and money for rookie pool...
Not sure where the $ is coming from yet but something big (cuts/restructures) must be coming soon, and then when/if Fitz signs that another $7-10M or more.
Does anyone know the timing as to when the Jets have to be under the cap? Seems like they're over it (or very, very close to it) at this point.
