Looks like we are going to have to find some serious value in the FA market regardless of how the Fitz situation plays out. Who are some guys you'd like to make a play for that won't cost an arm and a leg? A few names come to mind at positions of need: Ladarius Green, Tim Hightower, Alfred Morris, maybe Legarette Blount (maybe).
I think the Jets have to see who they're losing before they start looking for bargains in free agency. It's possible that they should just be looking to draft 3 starters with their 6 picks and push the back 3 hard to come up with another one. RB is where that works best, along with TE and OL. At the moment 2016 is shaping up to be a competitive restructuring and rebuilding season, maybe in the 8-8 range. If the Jets can't lock down Fitzpatrick or find another starting QB it'll probably be a bit worse than that. If they can keep the OL solid while restructuring it and adding some youth and they do get Fitzpatrick it might be a bit better. The nightmare scenario at the moment is that the OL degrades, with the loss of D'Brick or Mangold to contract or injury issues, and the the Jets aren't able to maintain a coherent offense with or without Fitzpatrick. That's the 4-12 scenario, similar to 2005 and 2007. We look at those seasons as being Chad injury seasons but it's notable that the OL had major problems both years and in 2005 there was no running game to help Bollinger out. By 2007 we had added Thomas Jones, who was a decent back but the Jets had no consistency up front out of LG and the picket fence couldn't keep the foxes out of the henhouse.
What does everyone think the market for Matt Forte is? If Doug Martin and LamarMiller are in the five to $6 million range, does Forte go for more than that or do teams start taking his age into consideration and does he take more in the three to $4 million range?
Word is he wants to play for a contender. So I think if one of those teams comes calling he would settle for 1 year for 3.5 Him to the Pats makes too much sense IMO
Yea... unfortunately. Does anyone take a shot on Arian Foster? I could see Macc calling up his old guy...
Someone def will I just hope it isnt us. Foster cant be counted on to play even a quarter of a season these days.
Macc's stated goal is to fill out the team in FA so he can go BPA throughout the draft. Of course, this never happens and BPA usually goes by the wayside after the 1st or 2nd round of the draft. We could easily lose all 3 RBs, which means Macc will definitely grab at least one in FA, leaving the rest up to the draft. With our push to get younger and faster, Macc may be scouring the 31 other practice squads or 3rd stringer sitting around the league. He may not be down with bringing in a 30 yr old has-been, even if that has-been used to be something.
I'd go get him even though it's a huge risk. You just can't sign him without resigning Powell and grabbing another back in the draft you definitively know can at least take a heavy work load even if they're not world beaters. Some bargain receivers I like to fill that slot role are: Andre Holmes, Chris Hogan, Marlon Brown, Kamar Aiken (might not be a bargain at this point), Jeremy Ross (also a KR), Jordan Norwood, and Jermaine Kearse or Ricardo Lockette if he can recover from the neck injury if he hasn't retired. We can't allocate a ton of money into the spot given the cap restraints and the money tied up in Decker and Marshall but we absolutely need to add some depth at receiver. Something tells me this regime is in no way comfortable in going into next season relying on Amaro and Enunwa to platoon to be the #3 target. It's going to be interesting to see what the Ravens do. As far as I know they have one receiver on the roster once free agency starts and that's Perriman who missed his whole rookie season. They badly need targets and I could see them wanting to keep Aiken but add a big time received on the other side of him.
Brian Costello is saying TE Ladarius Green could be somebody we may be targeting. http://pline.co/r/K1OKFCS
exactly. I understand Macc's point to try and have maximum flexibility in the draft, but building your team through FA will cost a ton more money than through the draft. If it were me, I'd do it the other way around. Build cheaply through the draft and THEN add the BPA (or two) in FA. Macc sort of did this his first year, taking BPA in FA (Revis, Skrine, Carpenter, etc) and then got what he could from the draft, but now were paying for it since FA usually cost 10x what a player from the draft costs.
This will be an interesting week. By the 13th a lot of Jet questions will be answered. At least with this GM, the team will field a playable product in 2016. Thats the best Iam hoping for at this point
The problem with the way Idzik had planned on rebuilding the team was he really wasn't given nearly enough time to do it. In a huge media market you can't start from the bottom and basically give away seasons for a better future. He had a vision similar to what Jacksonville has been doing. It didn't help that he missed pretty badly in the mid rounds of those drafts in particular when he had a million picks in 2014. But when you look back at it he drafted a pro bowl calibre defensive end in Richardson, a stud strong safety in Calvin Pryor, our third receiving option in Enunwa, a key special teamer and depth linebacker in Trevor Reilly, and our current starting right guard in Brian Winters. Toss in Geno and take him for what he is, and the possible development of Amaro and he really didn't come away with as many bad players as people make it seem (plus the trade for Ivory). He was setting himself up to tear the roster down, repair the cap problems, and spend big last year like Mac did although he didn't get the chance to. I would've liked to see him get one more year to see how he did free agency differently than Maccagnan did. We'll see how he does if he ever gets another GM job where there's less media pressure and asshole fans that put up billboards for his firing.
Huh? Sorry, that makes absolutely no sense. To begin with, Mac isn't trying to build the team through FA. He has clearly stated that he is seeking to build the team through the draft and wants to be able to take the BPA at every pick. You yourself state that in one post, and then you contradict yourself with this later post. He spent so much money in FA last year because he HAD to, and the Jets were in dire need. He wanted some stability, respectability and competitiveness. Mac has stated that he seeks to address holes/needs in FA mostly with younger and cheaper players for competition. If there isn't a younger player, then he may have to sign a vet stop gap. If he can occasionally add a very good young player who fits a need, then he will probably do it if the Jets can afford it. If the draft came first, GMs would be forced to draft for need which would result in a lot more reaching. Then when you add the BPA in FA you're really talking big $ contracts. There's absolutely no way that's cheaper.
We currently have the least amount of cap space in the league,we can't even afford our own players. We need to start cutting people and restructure some contracts
would like to start with a couple of our own: Powell, Douzable, Henderson, Jarrett assuming we part ways with Cumberland, and Davis: L Green and D Allen should be a high priorities for TE. as i don't trust either Amaro or Sudfeld, i'd also bring in Chandler to compete at the H-back. Boobie Dixon not a bad choice for HB/FB hybrid with special teams value. At OL, i like Schwartz, Allen and Osemele if they cut Breno, although they may be tough to afford.
i'd like tashaun gipson if his asking price isn't too crazy he was super good two seasons ago and absolute ass last season, but i'd be willing to take the flier
